Was just musing about this to myself this morning.
The one I was really wondering about was a young fella whose name I think was Kevin who presented kid's programmes even though he was barely a teenager himself. What became of him?
Others that crossed my mind; Hilary Orpen, Marian Richardson, Dave Heffernan, Liam Nolan (Sports Stadium), Brendan O'Reilly (did he die or I am mistaken), Michael Murphy (bearded newsreader), the lad that presented Talkabout (Alan something?)

Anyone else remember a fella called Liam Cahill who used to be
a reporter on RTE back in the 70s?
How about Mary Fitzgerald from Anything Goes? Or any of those
people who were Bosco's sidekicks, especially Johnathan Ryan!

Kevin was a strange one he was on the tv for about 20 years but he never aged or grew one inch.
I think Brendan OReilly is dead.

David Heffernan owns a TV production company in Dublin. Bosco's mate Jonathan Ryan (he was the guy with the short black hair and the beard, right?) is an actor who was in the not-very-good film Patriot Games (Harrison Ford, Sean Bean). As I recall he came to a sticky end, playing a double-crossing IRA man who got a bullet behind the ear after being tied naked to a bed by an IRA woman. He was in In The Name Of The Father as well, and a made-for-TV movie called Omagh, in which he played Gerry Adams, according to the Internet Movie Database.

Tis very true about that Kevin fella. Creepy.
Alan Hughes is on TV3's breakfast programme.
Someone on upthedeise is doing a media course and Michael Murphy is one of the lecturers.
I often see Mary Fitzgerald around Fitzwilliam Square. (along with Gavin Lambe of course mwah mwah!)

Saw Kevin in Bruxelles last year, couldn't believe it,still looked the same way, went over (fairly locked) told him how I really enjoyed watching him all those years ago or words to that effect.....Sound lad think he "suffers" from the same "disease" as Gary Coleman (Arnold from Different Strokes) though

Jonathan Ryan is one of the most well paid voice over artists in Ireland. Does a load of voice over work on the continent as well. Nice fella by all accounts. He also appeared in Bracken playing this rogueish London-based Irish builder called Schooner.

Youngline presenter. Ran from around 1977 to 1982. Other presenters of it were Ultan Macken, Theresa Mannion and possibly Aengus McNally.
Brendan O'Reilly died a few years ago. Funeral was in Donnybrook church.

The London scenes in Bracken are harrowing stuff especially when Dinny arrives over to look for Miley. Schooner was some boyo.

of course if RTE had proper respect for their archive material we would see these 'stars of yesteryear' in repeats or DVD releases or whatever.
instead of us trying to rely on hazy recollections RTE should take an example from the BBC and starting releasing some of this stuff on DVD. Or else set up an RTE Gold TV station. Showing classic health and safety ads too!
before people say it NOT ALL episodes of Wanderly Wagon have been wiped/destroyed. Some are left.

Brendan O'Reilly was a gentleman and a briallant athlete. He won an athletics scolarship to the states and I believe he competed in the Olympics.

The Heffernan Bros are doing well - excellent operators.
Now in management too. Anyone see Tadgh Cook on Miriam last Saturday? He's managed by Dave Heffernan. Tadgh's father is a friend of mine (was at the Fesival of Speed with him this year), very impressive setup.
Now theres a possible good investment for ye - any BES/ Film investment on offer with these lads is worth a punt.

Willie, you are correct in that Brendan (RIP) was indeed selected for the '56 team to go to Melbourne.
On the night before he was due to travel to San Francisco to sail ( the team went overland and by sea), he received a telegram from the Olympic Council of Ireland telling him not to travel, as they could not afford to send another athlete. He was in college in the USA at the time and therefore was halfway almost to Australia.
This, despite that fact that Brendan was European high jump record holder at the time.
An absolute sporting tragedy as Brendan would almost assuredly have added another medal to that brillant team's haul of
1 x Gold
1 x Silver
3 x Bronze
Gerry Martina was beaten for the bronze in wrestling also and John Lalor did very well in the hammer. He finished 4th in Rome I think.

Anyone hear Jerry Kiernan on radio1 Sunday evening after the game? It was an interesting and lengthy discussion on the state of Irish athletics, some hope for middle distance juniors but otherwise pushing the need to concentrate on field events. There was also a reference to "if we did not play GAA", mentioning the athleticism of the Tyrone and Dublin players. Ho hum ....
He said he wanted to be a Kerry footballer until he saw the 64 Olympics on TV.

Jerr's been singing this refrain for a while now.
Didn't know he harboured ambitions to be a boxer.
That could be the only discipline the '64 Olympics could have inspired in him. Jim McCourt boxed well but came up, yet again, against his nemeisis, Barranikov from the CCCP, who had already beaten him in the European championships.
Out athlete's wer a joke, with the exception of Jim Hogan, who almost died (not kidding, he almost did) trying to keep pace with Bikila in the marathon.
Maybe Billy Mills (who?) inspired him to become a runner. Billy was never heard of before or since the last 100 yards of the 10,000 metres final.
