A bit too quick if you ask me, I wonder what input Nicholas & Derek had into this decision, anyway Miley may just bring a bit of steel to Cork.

Tony Leahy has been fla`d again, he only gave notice of his intentions yesterday, how the hell could he be gone so quickly. This smells to me. I`m delighted someone like him is involved, but (open to correction ) his only mangement has been with Tracton juniors (super job by all accounts ) and Aghada. Is it a big jump even with his playing experience. Tony Leahy has won 4 Munsters and an All-Ireland with U-21`s.
Now of course maybe Leahy is a select or, now that would make me really happy, a bit of foresight.
I know one or two of the U-21`s, and they talk so highly of that whole U-21 set-up, i would have liked it on-block.
At least we`re on a road somewhere, where who knows, but somewhere. Next thing is to get the rest of the coutry back to just disliking us cos were cocky and not cos we fcuked everything up!!!

I would have preferred Tony too, but I think Conor can do a good job and he will do it his way. I hope the players will get behind him and the team fully now and try to resore some normality.
Don`t worry lovely hurler about the rest of the country and their dislikes- that`s their problem. Hopefully everybody involved can now restore some pride in the red jersey, the footballers in particular after their final display last year.

Does it have to be a unamimous decision? Otherwise surely the two players can be ignored and the five county board men can pick who they like?
Like if the two players don`t like the new manager can they veto any decision?

To be perfectly fair to Leahy, I think he simply had too much on his plate. CIT are going for the Sigerson Cup and he`s a big job on his hands with St.Finbarr`s trying to get them back up to senior this year. They`re huge commitments and you can`t imagine he could do them along with the Cork seniors.
Have to say I`m quite happy with Counihan. He did an excellent job in making Aghada - a club with a small pool of players - competitive in the championship, as they reached two county semi-finals. Was supposedly a key member in 1999 as a backs coach and I``d imagine there`ll be a fair bit of respect for him amongst the players.

Sorry i didn`t know Leahy was going to be training the Barrs Intermediate team (Sounds weird, that used to be their 2nd team only 4 years ago ) , My club plays against the Barrs this year, so i taught i would have heard that. What was he thinking so? Is he loaded and can just coach football? I`m jealous if thats the case :- )
Ya i had forgotten about Counihan been involved before. Ya its a very good appointment. Could have been made 4 months ago of course. He`ll bring steel, thats for sure! I suppose i was favouring Leahy and was playing him up more.

I really like that Counihan got the job - he was a rock in his playing days and has the type of experience that should see him have a successful time.
However it is all a bit odd do you not think? Obviously something must have been going on in the background all along to have it done so quick. This is all well and good to have a manager ready for this weekend but its hardly right to have it done so quickly. Does it say anywhere how long the appointment is for? Is it just this year?
Me thinks there could be more on this - On the other hand the speed of it will probably be ignored by everyone because people are just glad that things are done and dusted...

Let it go willya? I think everyone down here just wants to get on with things. I am sure neither the board officers nor the players were in the mood for a fight, unlike all of us keyboard warriors!
Conor Counihan should have got the job a few years ago anyway. he is the ideal choice, and an easy choice. did a great job with aghada and as backs coach for cork in 1999. He`ll bring his own people with him, hopefully tony leahy will be included, but if he isn`t I won`t hold it against counihan.

I`m presuming once Leahy gave up the Cork U21`s last year, the Barrs were straight in to get him. They needed a big name to try and get them back up, and there`s no doubting he`s a quality coach. I guess the fact that his sons are involved as well made the job attractive for him. I`d imagine that if the County Board offered him the job, it`d have been difficult for Leahy to tell the Barrs he was quitting. They`d be left in the lurch a couple of months before championship. Having said that I`d like the idea of Leahy being picked as a select or. Even John Cleary would be good in that sense as they`d provide Counihan with a figure who`s familiar with the younger players. Kerry have a situation like that this year where Sean Geaney is the U21 manager and a senior select or.

What was the Cork players` problem with Teddy Holland anyway? Was it just a power struggle with the county board with Teddy in the middle or do they not like Holland as well or not rate him?

jaysus......you know, demanded that nobody take the job who couldn`t pick his own select ors, asked for everybody to withold from it until issue was resolved. Teddy ignored em and gave em two fingers........
Anyway, in the real world teddy wouldn`t be in the top 10 coaches in cork. He only got the job cos all suitable candidates ran a mile. Just ask the clonakilty players about 2007.....

I presume Fr Philip Egan from Liscarroll will be going in as part of Counihans team.
He was the Galbally trainer for a few years and brought Counihan to Galbally one night. Apparently he was due to go into the Cork job with Counihan in 2003 until Billy Morgan was a late entry.

The circumstances of Counihan`s appointment, less than 20 hours after the Cork Board`s decision to sack Holland, smell just as much as those surrounding Holland`s appointment in the first instance.
It beggars belief that the Board`s negotiations with Counihan could have started and concluded successfully in such a short space of time.
The Board delegates should now ask themselves why they allowed the Board to pre-judge their decision last night, by negotiating with Counihan while Holland was still manager.
Counihan should ask himself what will be do if the same thing happens to him.

The delegates should be asking themselves many questions about what they allowed the Board (exc utive ) to do or not do over the last few years!!

Believe me Counihan won`t have a problem there. Which one of them will be able to say to him "show me your medals"?

Tony Leahy could be forgiven for smelling something rotten about it all.
Of course the biggest single issue with Holland might well have been that he stated he would remove 12 of the panel. I presume he had said that long before it appeared in print, and that it would have rankled with squad members. You just wonder would the strike have lasted as long if Conor Counihan had been appointed initially rather than Holland.

SLR... why should Tony Leahy feel aggrieved or have expected the job????
Just think back a few yrs to your own county and the way Dave Keane was thrust into the senior job after 3 succesful u.21 campaigns, Im sure you`ll agree it didnt work out and the general opinion afterwards was that he should have taken a yr or two out from intercounty managment before getting involved in snr managment. He was blinkered and loyal (understandably ) to the players who played for him u.21. But managing a senior intercounty team is a lot different from dealing with 19/20/21 yr olds. Tony Leahy is definitely one for the future in Cork but might be a better option in 2 or 3 yrs.

I hate Counihan. Grabbing Jack O`Shea by the balls in 1988 one of the dirtiest acts ever on a GAA pitch. Fair play to Jacko he took Counihant with a haymaker afterwards. maybe he should not have retalitated but a punch on the jaw was a fine decent thing relative to Counihan`s desire for grabbing Jacko`s genitals

Counihan is a good appointment, he was backs coach in 99 and that sides defence couldnt be faulted, it was the forwards cost us Sam that year.
He`s done a fine job in making Aghada to be a force to be reckoned with and one things for sure, his Cork side wont lack a physical edge.

The Dave Keane situation was unfortunate
JBM, Paidi O`Se, Mickey Harte jumped straight in from underage and succeeded. Time will tell on Liam Sheedy.

According to todays indo, Egan `a dab hand at oratory` was instrumental in Corks All Ireland success when addressing the players after training recently.
There wont be a cow milked in Liscarroll for a week!!
