I don`t drink much of it, but would the closure have an impact on people`s consumption?

Looks like their just pulling the Brewery from the Quays to somewhere else, don`t think that will have any impact on them at all, although when I lived in Dublin I used to love the smell of the hops you could get near Neuston

Not as much as it was worth a couple of years ago.
I suppose they will only close when the replacement is built so will be a few years yet.

Just a thought, that is Dublins number one tourist attraction. The guinness brewery at St James`s Gate. What wil happen to it, I have never been there myself. There is the possibility of high rise development of the part of the site that is closest to Heuston station, so that is probably on their minds.

Diageo said that they`d retain the musuem. But then again, promises promises, especially in the world of business.

Valued at €3bn a year ago.
Suggestion apparently is to build on a greenfield site in Clondalkin. Could have implications as well for Kilkenny (Smithwicks ) and Dundalk (Harp ) .

Rumour has it that the greenfield site will be in the Grange Castle I.E. area on Nangor Road. Place is already plodaithe le daoine gach maidin. Dublin Bus were looking to build a garage/terminus out this/that way too.

The smell of hops was grand indeed. Not a bad thing at all if you ask me. But they should definitely retain the museum or actually be compelled to given it`s the biggest tourist attraction in the country.
Won`t be sad to see it go because that particular part of town has a really dead and delapidated feel about it. The workers would have provided the buzz in times past but there are so few of them left nown so the brewery and surrounding areas have a ghost town feel about them.
My only hope is that the massive site is used to spectacular effect. Given the ginormous price tag you can be sure that the plans will be grand indeed. Can`t see the likes of Sean Dunne or any other Irish property developer, even a consortium of them, raising that cash alone. Foreign investors will be driving this I reckon. Interest in this site will be absolutely global. Has to be the most significant parcel of land to ever come on the market in the history of the State. Can`t wait to see how this story unfolds. And you`d surely have to expect massive archaeological finds on this site given it`s close proximity to Wood Quay. With the sheer size of the site, it`s location etc. you can be damn sure that the plans and planning process will take years. This project could easily take up to ten years to be completed. I hope the Corpo or whatever they go by now insist that the development is not a gated community. That`s what I liked about Sean Dunne`s plans for the Jury`s Ballsbridge site. It was all about integrating the development into the surrounding area through the provision of public spaces, theatres, etc.

See, this is the attitude I have a major issue with.
This generation, but specifically the 50+ and my own are getting there, seem to think that they were the first effing generation to live. Therefore, if they don`t like the Irish language then lets try and banish it from schools, lets try and fight against the funding to all things Irish, branding it a waste of resources.
Then St.James`s Gate, which has been making Guinness since the early 1700s and our generation has decided that it woudl be good for houses.
So, I ask you , whats next. The Dail must be worth a bit of money. Lets knock that down and build flats.
Pheonix Park is prime for concrete. Lets not waste time people. It`s worth alot of money.
The greed and selfishness in this nation and of some of it`s people is staggering. I`m sure that future generations might like to know about Irish and living history like St.James`s gate etc.
Build the effing houses out where they plan to move the brewery to, and leave places like this to be enjoyed by future generations.
Am I wrong?
Yours in Rage,
GSH.

A lot of your sentiments are correct GSH but...the reaosn this city is in such s**he at the moment with traffic, people never seeing there families due to three hr commutes is for this exact reason, city centre should be residential and big industry on the outskirts like every other modern city.
No dobt Dublin will lose something when this happens but it is easy to justify this on a social basis as much as anything else.

Exactly Dan, if it curbs the urban sprawl only minimally it will be a great thing. You`d like to see the retention of as many as the culturally significant buildings on the site as possible and things like the landmark gate itself but after that should we really care? Future generations might even come to regard Guinness and drink as a part of our heritage that it isn`t worth celebrating or commemorating. I hope they do. There`s been too much harm done by it. I`d be more concerned about the retention of the Abbey in the City Centre and the upgrading of O`Connell Street than I ever would be about St. James`s Gate. Actually I`m kind of embarassed as it is, that the museum is our number one tourist attraction. What does that say about us and what stereotype does it feed into? If you ask me, overall, the brewery down there is just one huge eyesore. It would make the Golden Mile exactly that if the whole site was redeveloped. Now the other significant sites in Dublin that I would also love to see being sold or St. Anne`s Golf Club in Merrion and the Montrose Studios. Absolutely no reason for RTE to be on that site and it`s worth another absolute fortune. BBC are even moving out of their Shepherd`s Bush Studios relocating departments to places like Manchester. RTE should be forced to do the same. TV3 are in City West and they are doing okay.

I`m curious about what they could do there if the brewing is relocated. Surely most of these buildings are protected structures? Is residential a serious option? The site is larely surrounded by Marrowbone Lane, Maryland and Pimlico, although it is already well serviced with public transport.
However its also very close to the Coombe hospital. and if that site becomes available it`ll probably form part of the monster development at the former Players, and will then circle St Teresa`s Gardens.
My vague point is, if these are developed with big money, isn`t there the possibility that these inner city communities, who have already been isolated and deprived enough could be ghettoised even further.
Personally and professionally I`m at a loss with what could be done on the St James Gate site what would either make social sense or even economic sense.

I had the exact same conversation about RTE studios less than a week ago. It is an unbeleiveable eyesore as you drive out there, they made a lovely job of the Radisson out there nad then you just have this mass of ariels and pylons, very ugle and very poor use of space with extreme low rise development on the site. The fact that it is on the the best bus corridoor in the city where the service is comparable to the luas makes the situation even more depressing.
The next time RTE come banging for licence fee increases this is the obviosu solution, sell the fooking massive landbank ye own and that should secure your future for a while like any normal non semi state company (eg Jursy eg Diageo ) are doing.
Why wont it happen, because they key decision makers would face a trek to work, a new local etc etc.

Id say look at what Dunnes has planned for Juries and you wont be far wrong, commericial, retail, office and residential being the cream for the developer. Look at the great job they did on the gasworks and youl see where a good architect will earn his corn

There are some protected buildings on the St James Gate site, but not many, and it is a huge site, 64 acres I think. The environs of the St James Gate site differ significantly from the Jury’s & Gasworks are, so not sure if a similar development would work out there.
Incidentally, I see the developer of the Gasworks site now wants to convert it to a hotel so presumably he wasn’t too successful in getting rid of the apartments even though it was developed in better economic climes.

Correct and right on the Gasworks, actually walked in there at the weekend for a look, some set up. Only thing that hasnt sold is the actual Gasworks building, there is hundreds of occupied apartments and huge offices in there too incl Google
Whether he couldnt sell the apts or couldnt sell them for what he felt was a fair price is a different debate. They were v expensive, overly so even in the good times. Now he wants change of planning to a hotel, something which wouldnt have been granted day 1 i giess. Make of that what you will. Liam Caroll hasnt made too many false moves over the years.

From what I can see they are not closing or selling the James` Gate site.
"The company intends to rejuvenate its St James`s Gate Brewery in Dublin city and invest €650m in the historic site." RTE.ie
They are closing Dundalk and Kilkenny.

Massive blow to Kilkenny.
(And Dundalk, but I`m not from Dundalk )
The brewery has been synonomous with Kilkenny.
It has employed people in the area for nearly 300 years.
From wikipedia:
"It is Ireland’s oldest operating brewery, founded by John Smithwick in 1710 on land owned by the Duke of Ormonde"
I know a few people who work there. Sad stuff.
