From Hoganstand..
Limerick team to face Tipp named
09 May 2008
Limerick boss Richie Bennis has announced his team for Sunday’s attractive senior hurling challenge against Tipperary in Dundrum (throw-in 7pm ) .
Last year’s beaten All-Ireland finalists defeated Wexford in a challenge last Monday and will be keen to maintain winning ways against the recently-crowned NHL champions.
The game will mark the official opening of the new stand and upgraded facilities at the Knockavilla/Donaskeigh grounds in Dundrum. The club has carried out an impressive development programme which includes the provision of a new pitch, new dressing rooms, security fencing, boundary wall, double hurling wall, electronic scoreboard and covered stand.
Limerick (SH v Tipperary ) : D. Bulfin. D. Reale (Capt ) , M. O’Riordan, K. O’Rourke. P. Lawlor, P. O’Dwyer, S. Hickey. K.Tobin, J. Ryan. K. Ryan, S. O’Connor, O. Moran. M. Fitzgerald, N. Moran , E. Ryan.

Things starting to take shape for Bennis
Limerick hurling manager Richie Bennis received some welcome news this week after it emerged that Denis Maloney played for his club at the weekend after a lengthy lay-off due to cruciate ligament injury.
Bennis admitted that things are beginning to take shape for his squad by saying. "Everyone is coming right, now at the right time. We were a bit concerned but everyone is coming around."
The Treaty County have at least three more challenge matches before they take on either Clare or Waterford on June 22, and the Limerick boss hopes that the match practice can bolster his side’s chances before they enter the Munster SHC semi-final encounter.
"We have three more challenge matches now, Tipperary next week then Kilkenny and Dublin, and we’re hoping to play Galway as well on the Wednesday fortnight before the Championship."
Brian Geary remains a doubt for the Limerick hurlers, but Mark Foley made an impact in Bennis’ side’s challenge match with Wexford at the weekend and admitted he was impressed by the defender.
"It helps to get to know each others play and there were little things were tried tonight. We tried out Mark (Foley ) at centre-back for the second half and he looked the part."
"We still don’t know if Brian (Geary ) will be available and if he is, will he have enough match practice."

James Ryan, aged 20 from Carryspillane. Looks like hes in his late 30s. Good solid hurler, a minor centre forward from 2005. Plays with Limerick footballers too.
Kevin Ryan, aged circa 22 from Na Piarsaigh. Talented wing forward who impressed last week.

James Ryan is actually 21, had the 21st recently. He has the same birthday as me, I`m 10 years older, but I claim that I`m the one thats 21 and hes the one thats 31! Midfield is his best position but the minors were playing him at centre forward in 05. He is a lot more mobile now than he was then, probably due to the football training for the past two years. He played on the Limerick under 21 hurlers as a 17 year old in 2004, having played a massive part in beating the Kilmallock `Allstars` in the 2003 under 21 county final when he was still under 16.
Kevin Ryan was a 04 minor. I have been watching him for a long time and I have always rated him. He got a good few scores in the County under 21 final of 04. In fact I discussed him from time to time with his father without realising that he was his son. Good job I didnt say anything negative.

ya kevin impressed me enough against gerldines last year, has a lot of the atributes that make a good wing forward
good to hear james has become a bit more mobile,
played with him in school and it always seemed that his strength was his main asset when he was twice the size of the fella marking him
i never thought he`d make a senior county hurler thought he`d fade away and lose out because of his hurling ability when fellas caught up with him in size.. but would be delighted to be proved wrong..

You would imagine that the senior intercounty hurling training will bring on James, particularly his striking on his weaker side. He was massive as a young lad in fairness, i remember him making a charge up the field against Kilmallock in the 03 replayed final and Kevin Mahoney went in to do him and was bounced back onto the ground, whilst James kept soloing on without breaking stride or breaking a sweat

I dunno what sort of team tipp will put out but it was be strong enough because most of the panel have a good deal of championship experience. Lads like Diarmuid Fitz, Webster, Fanning, Dara Egan, Paul Ormonde, Dara Hickey, Hugh Moloney have played hardly any of the league and will surely feature tomorrow night.

Was at it. Tipperary won 2-18 to 2-12 and the scores came easier to them. Seamus Callinan must have scored 1-4 from play
Centre back is a problem. Damien Reale and Seamus Hickey were the pick of the bunch. James Ryan hurled very well at centrefield and Ollie Moran did well. Lawlor looked hungry and hurled well when he was on the field in the first half but if the man rounds him, he wont catch him. Kevin Ryan should have been given more gametime.
Team: Dave Bulfin, Damien Reale, Damien Cosgrove, Kieran O`Rourke, Peter Lawlor, Paudie O`Dwyer, Seamus Hickey, James Ryan, Kevin Tobin, Kevin Ryan, Seanie O`Connor, Ollie Moran, Mike Fitz, Niall Moran, Eoin Ryan. Subs: Andrew O`Shaughnessey, Mike O`Brien, Donie Ryan and Mark Foley for Kevin Ryan, Peter Lawlor, Eoin Ryan and Mike Fitz at half time. Michael Noonan, Dodge and Barry Foley went on in the second half.

SLR have you any idea who (or what ) started the row between Paddy Stapleton and Mike O Brien....they were flaking hurleys across each others back and finished up wrestling on the ground.
It was a good game, and of benefit to both sides I thought. Was indeed impressed with James Ryan, he is a no frills, let the ball go type of hurler.
For Tipp, Paddy Stapleton did very well and took a lot of punishment, O Mahony also stood out. McGrath was great as usual and Kerwick and Callinan were the pick of the forwards with Webster having a very effective spell where he caught about 4 balls and set up a score with each, including the goal. He could start in Cork yet.
