Dundee Utd to complain about ref
Referee Mike McCurry
McCurry courted controversy at Ibrox
Dundee United are to lodge an official complaint about referee Mike McCurry`s handling of Rangers` 3-1 victory.
United appeared to be denied a penalty and had a goal chalked off for offside in an explosive second half.
"We had a blatant penalty and he bottled it," said United manager Craig Levein after Saturday`s game.
"If it`s not a level playing field and, if we don`t get the decisions, blatant, important decisions then what is the point of turning up?"
The defeat has hit United`s hopes of finishing third in the Scottish Premier League and clinching a Uefa Cup spot for next season.
"I thought Mike McCurry had the balls to stand up and give these decisions, but he bottled it," Levein said.
"Not only is it a penalty kick, but it`s a sending off for Davie Weir. But he didn`t want to do it because this game meant so much to Rangers."
Levein said he asked the referee what was the point of his players turning up if they were to be the victims of such decisions.
"Anybody who is of a fair mind watching that today would see that we had no chance of winning that.
"We get a perfectly good goal chalked off and a blatant penalty, with not even a decision to make, and it should`ve been a sending off."
Levein`s strong words could lead to disciplinary action from the Scottish FA.
But United chief exc utive Stephen Thompson has promised to back his manager "all the way".
Television personality and ardent United fan Lorraine Kelly phoned BBC Scotland`s Your Call radio programme to weigh into the debate.
"I`ve gone from being scunnered and angry to being weary of it," he said.
"It just happens far too often. I am a Dundee United fan and we were robbed.
"We have to stop whinging and moaning about it and do something about our referees."
Had Rangers drawn or lost to United, Celtic would have become favourites to retain the Scottish Premier League title.
"I think Craig Levein got it right," said Kelly. "The ref bottled it. The way Scottish football is, they are intimidated.
"Nobody is infallible, but it might be easier if we get referees from somewhere else.
"This was a huge, huge game for Dundee United. Why should we be treated like second class citizens?"

The above doesnt mention Cousin`s headbutt or the punch that Hunt received - neither got a red. It also doesnt mention that the dissallowed offside goal was in fact an og by Weir. 5 key decisions went against United and it may have cost them a place in next years UEFA cup. McCurry has a long history of being generous to Rangers but yesterday was surely his finest hour.

in fairness both halves of the old firm benefit from decisions . the small clubs get it tough in caledonia . same in most soccer leagues to be honest . the rich get richer . bottom line in plc soccer .

Good win at home to Hibs today. 4 point lead and a goal difference that is 7 better. Here`s the fixture list:
Rangers
Motherwell Saturday 17 May away
St Mirren Monday 19 May away
Aberdeen Thursday 22 May away
Celtic
Dundee United Thursday 22 May away
Pity Motherwell have 3rd place wrapped up already. Not as much for them to play for, but hopefully they`ll drop 2 points somewhere.

I think they`ll drop points in one of their next two games, here`s hoping. The key is for the bhoys to win against Dundee Utd.

Yeah, I think if we beat Dundee United, we`ll win it. That`s by no means a certainty though.
They`ll beat St Mirren so if its going to happen it`ll be at Motherwell or Aberdeen. Aberdeen really hate them and would love nothing better than to deny them last day of season.

of course the ref was poor v dundee , rangers got all the breaks there, but celtic also got huge break v aberdeen and motherwell, think in general the two big clubs in scotland always get the big calls, as regards the league i think both celtic and rangers will win there remaining games. that would give rangers title ,which in fairness would be fair enough, they just about derserve it. my own interest in scots football is all about the hibs,a great club with mighty irish history, wont ever be as succesfull as celtic or rangers in terms of trophys but in all other ways the hibees are a match for anyone.a club formed by a limerick man for the irish in the slums of edinburgh before celtic were even born, its strange why hibs dont have more support in ireland, but i suppose celtics success swings things in there favour, most ppl tend to follow clubs that win silverware. i think in general the scots league gets a raw deal from ppl ,who tend to attach themeselves to the more hyped up premiership, i like the passion and excitement of scottish football, where games are played in front of a more genuine type of fan than the plastic ,tourist type, camera snapping, bland. hype belivers of the premier league.

Yea, Rangers got very lucky, but then again the old firm generally get everything their own way.. Aberdeen had a late goal disallowed against Celtic, and Samaras got a lucky winner the week after. Still, I reckon Celtic will do it..

A few replies in 1 here.
firstly this Aberdeen goal has to be put to bed. In the 87th min of the same game Samaras scored a perfect goal to make it 2-0. There is no dispute about this - the ref blew for a foul by Killen that noone saw but himself. This would have made it 2-0. Had Aberdeens goal would have made it 2-1 and a non story. There is another thread going on which is slagging Sky off about the same thing - hyping it up. A run of the mill win versus a controversy - the controversy wins every time. It sells more papers and get more TV viewers. Samaras`s goal has been airbrushed from history - its as if it didn`t happen. The Motherwell incident is more straight forward. Celtic got a corner that they shouldn`t have - 2 players jumped for a ball - it took 2 replays on Setanta for them to work it out so you cant really call that bias - BTW Motherwell got one as well that they didnt deserve but didnt score from it - again that isnt reported as it isnt a good story. You cannot compare any of the above with saturday`s events. McCurry got 5 big decisions wrong, all in favour of one team. He either made mistakes or choices - no prizes for guessing what I think.
Caidman makes good points about followers of the Scottish game and I agree. It doesnt have the glamour and hype and therefore doesn`t attract the hangers on. The downside of this is that it doesnt get the money either and the quality suffers.
i know I have a blind spot with regard to the EPL (probably becuase I never picked a team and am unlikely to now ) but the hype drives me insane. I happened to be driving at 6pm yesterday and Newstalk led with Man U instead for the Leinster Championship. I think that this is just wrong - out own national games should always be promoted first and foremost. I spent the morning trying to escape Man U on my way to work - a hard job let me tell you. The GAA coverage was minimal. Yes - the EPL is popular but does it have to be inflicted upon us from all angles.

I think its also worth pointing out the racial abuse Noel Hunt received on saturday. If it was a colored/arab/jew the press would be up in arms about this but because hes Irish its ok.
One Scotland my @ss.
The huns will drop points. certainy against the sheep - they really hate each other. Fingers crossed `well will take a couple aswell.

I think the Hibernian club played down its Irishness – to better assimilate into Scottish sporting society – for a long-period. They only reintroduced the harp into their crest in the 1990s.
That, as well as Celtic`s success and the closer links between Glasgow and Ulster (than between Edinburgh and Ulster ) are the main reasons for Celtic`s greater support in this country.

Usual pathetic bleatings from Celtic fans. Rangers beat Dundee United pulling up on Saturday. Any comments from the Celtic fans about Scott McDonalds offside goal or the dubious penalty shout that Celtic got in their favour in the last Old Firm?

And Rangers` tailspin continues.
All that talk of a quadruple is looking pretty hollow now.
After the ignominy in Manchester, they`ve drawn 1-1 today away to Motherwell.
Three points behind the good ghuys but with one game in hand.
The way things are going, Celtic might yet win the league without kicking a ball - the Rangers FC` form suggests they may well lose to St Mirren on Monday night...

They had a rake of home games earlier in the season and it`s catching up with them.
