From today`s Indo:

Wexford feel heat over Brennan jibe
By Colm Keys
Wednesday May 14 2008

Wexford County Board could face charges of bringing the GAA into disrepute over their recent press statement accusing president Nickey Brennan of "hypocrisy".

The GAA`s Management Committee has instructed Director General Paraic Duffy to write to Wexford asking why they shouldn`t face disrepute charges over the content of the statement issued after their case against the handling of Cork`s league participation ran aground at DRA level.

Management discussed the statement, which was issued to the media but not sent to Croke Park, at the weekend and have decided to seek answers from Wexford before deciding what action to take.

Duffy said he has written to Wexford to ask about the "personalised" comments.

Disrepute

"Because of the nature of those comments management felt it appropriate to write to Wexford asking why they shouldn`t face charges of disrepute," said Duffy, who added that they only knew of the comments through the media.

Wexford took a hard line after their DRA action failed on a technicality. The GAA successfully argued that Wexford were too late with their original appeal.

Wexford challenged the GAA`s handling of the Cork issue claiming that the Rebel County should have been thrown out of both leagues for failing to fulfil their first two games.

Instead they forfeited just the points from the games and Cork were fined €400 for each game. Wexford appealed when they received their fixture to play Cork in the hurling league in March.

It led to a bitter dispute, with Wexford claiming the GAA and the president used "technicalities" to stymie their case. This, they suggested, was tantamount to hypocrisy given the president`s appeals at Congress that punishment should be accepted when it is handed down.

"On a broader issue one has to question both the president and Croke Park`s rationale in their use of `technicalities` to prevent the tribunal from hearing the substantive issue in this case," Wexford said in the `offending` statement.

"This is the same president who implored County Boards and their representatives at Congress in Sligo just two weeks ago to accept rulings of Croke Park and not to seek to circumvent them by means of `technicalities` or other loopholes.

"Yet in this instance every effort was made by Croke Park to deprive Wexford County Board of a hearing by use of the very same methods that the president implored County Boards not to use. Is this not hypocrisy in the extreme?"

In an ironic twist Wexford then suggested that Croke Park would not explore the matter further.

"We have no doubt that Croke Park will respond, if they do, to this press release by simply stating the matter has now been decided by the DRA and is, therefore, at an end."

How wrong they were, as the GAA have now decided to get tough.

maybe the term "hypocrisy" is a bit offensive and insulting but it`s hard to see where the wexford statement is wrong. he clearly asked that county boards not use technicalities to circumvent discplinary processes and then croke park does just that. maybe "double standards" would have been a wiser term

I supported the Cork players stance in terms of what they were up against down there, they were correct to strike when they did. I also would have supported throwing them out of the league as this the punishment by the rulebook.

Weighing this up the Wexford county board are 100% accurate with the word hypocrisy in their statement imo. Nickey has been a terrible president anyway, only interested in sound byte over substance.

The Wexford County Board were correct in highlighting the hypocrisy of having their case thrown out on a technicality, but they were wrong in personalising the whole matter by mentioning Nicky Brennan`s alleged "part" in the whole affair.

dead right, if they had been thrown out the players could have shared the blame with the county board for a situation that was caused by nobody outside cork.

Wexford Co Board are agian showing that, though they taking the correct ploy in these matters, they are making a complete balls of making their point.

The correct strategy would have been to send an official complaint to Croke Park  (point out the irony of Brennan`s statement and the situation that they were met with at the DRA )  and copied the complaint to the press.

the were cuaght out earlier in the year as well when John Meyler called for Brennan to retain the relegated clubs in Division 1. He should have been told that they stance was to try and have Cork relegated due to the rules being altered. Instead it just smacked of `bad losing`.

It worried me that the Co Board can get the fundamentals wrong on official business. God knows how they`re running the underage coaching camps and providing support for the senior panels.

It`s no wonder that Kehoe decided to opt for a summer abroad.

if you have any knowledge of some of the people invovled in teh senior county board, you`ll know that they`re far from ideal candidates. this probably wouldn`t have happened if Mick Kinsella was still secretary, he`s very capable

Know a good few of them spade caller, never said that any of them were, in their professional life, `ideal characters`. Where di you get that from?

I just said that they failed to manage their response to the times that they felt they were unjustly dealt with by the GAA.

Brennan is a pure hypocrite. Ranting at congress about county boards nto enforcing the rules while he allowed Cork to ride roughshod over the rule book. Wexford 100% right

sorry croppy i think you picked me up wrong there. i wasn`t referring to your opinion of them, it was just a general comment, not directed at you. also, just to clear it up, i never mentioned anybody`s "character", just that they weren`t ideal "candidates" for the job

Wexford defer GAA letter reply
By Martin Breheny
Thursday May 15 2008

WEXFORD won`t be dealing with Croke Park`s letter of complaint over their criticism on the handling of the Cork strike affair until the week after next.

County chairman, Ger Doyle will be out of the country until the end of next week, after which the Board will draw up a response. Director-General, Paraic Duffy wrote to Wexford early this week asking why they shouldn`t face disrepute charges arising from a statement issued to the press last month.

County secretary, Margaret Doyle, declined to comment on the affair yesterday, except to acknowledge that the letter had been received on Tuesday.

Wexford were critical of the manner in which their call for Cork to be ejected from the National Leagues for failing to fulfil fixtures was handled by the GAA. They raised question about "both the president`s and Croke Park rationale in their use of technicalities to prevent the tribunal  (DRA )  from hearing the substantive issue in this case."

They also made remarks about Nickey Brennan and alleged that a degree of `hypocrisy` applied to the manner in which their case was handled.

The statement was issued to the media but not to Croke Park, prompting the GAA`s Management Committee to take action. Wexford will consider the situation carefully before responding.

The fact that Croke Park have not only written to Wexford but also informed the media that the letter had been sent suggests a hardening of the line.

It`s understood that the Management Committee were especially peeved over what they perceived as an attack on the presidency.

However, the irony of the situation won`t have gone unnoticed among those who think it`s bizarre that Cork escaped with paltry €400 fines after failing to fulfil the first two rounds of the National Leagues, while a county who criticised the handling of the affair faces public censure and a possible hefty fine.
