just heard he passed away this morning
a true celtic legend
I met him last on a pre-season friendly in July, a nicer man you could not wish to meet
a man steeped in Celtic and their Irish history
thanks for everything Tommy

really Celtic minded,
he was unfortunate that he didn`t win more as a manager, but he never wavered from the celtic way. his teams always tried to play attractive football. a man of footballing principles

if only he could have lived to see Celtic win 3 in a row
Neil Lennon will have some act to follow
its gutting to think he was only 51
the word Celtic Legend has been completely overused in recent years but Tommy was right up there

agreed, in an era where everyone in football seems to be intechangeable by the week, tommy was one of teh last remaining "clubmen". he was celtic to the core, he never gave the impression he resented his lack of success as a manager or felt hard done by, he just seemed eager to be of some assistance. he`s what football used to be about
a true legend

Tommy was my hero when I first started travelling to Glasgow in the late seventies / early eighties .....an unbelievable player , style and passion personified . If any of you on here think Liam Brady had the sweetest left foot of that era , you didn`t reckon on Tommy Burns , his passing and crossing ability were unrivalled . Lived and died for the club , bled green n` white blood . I was at a game in 1980 against Aberdeen where he got sent off for standing on the neck of a certain Gordon Strachan ( they had some tussles ) .
Met him myself in person about 4 years ago and honestly it was a bigger thrill than meeting Henrik for me , `cause Tommy was the man.
Didn`t have the success he deserved as manager because he was a victim of the "biscuit tin" mentality that dominated the boardroom during his time , but his teams played with style .
God bless you Tommy ...........you were one of the greats and will never be forgotten ............Youll never walk alone........

Never met Tommy, but a true gent by all accounts. His teams always played the Glasgow Celtic way, he came very close to winning the title on a zero budget, playing some great football along the way. Had great faith aswell, was known to go to mass on weekdays, I hope this was a help to him in the last months of his life. May God bless you Tommy.

Celtic legend Tommy Burns has died after a battle with cancer, the club said today.
It was announced last month that Burns, 51, who was first diagnosed with skin cancer in 2006, was facing a new battle against the disease.
Former Scotland international Burns was an ex-manager of Celtic and had been a long-serving player with the Glasgow club.
He was also assistant to former Scotland managers Berti Vogts and Walter Smith

For all the `ol stagers on the Forum ......this team would have slaughtered the Rangers FC in the SPL this year ....
From 1980 / 81 season
Paddy Bonner
Danny Mc Grain
Alan Sneddon
Roy Aitken
Tom Mc Adam
Murdo Mc Leod
Davie Provan
TOMMY BURNS
George Mc Cluskey
Frank Mc Garvey
Charlie Nicholas
.........would have won it by a street , missing from this team would have been a good friend of Tommy`s who`d died in a domestic accident 6 months previously ..the great Johnny Doyle . Himself , Jinky and Tommy would provide some midfield partnership in Heaven`s 11..

A lovely quote from Tommy Burns:
"I think the saddest thing about the Old Firm rivalry is the people who have lost their lives after these games in the past, for such stupid reasons," he once said. "This is football. I remember Jock Stein always said that: it`s just a game. "To think that people can go out with hatred in their heart and take away people`s sons or brothers or fathers is just beyond belief. That`s the way I think about it now: it`s only a game. "Educate the kids to integrate with one another and not pay any attention to who`s a Catholic and who`s a Protestant, and any of that rubbish. "
