CLAIMS that a young Nigerian footballer had to endure a torrent of racist abuse from spectators at an underage game in Carlow have prompted strong criticism from the state’s racism watchdog.
Teboga Sebala, who moved to Carlow town with his family six years ago, was allegedly subjected to racist comments as he played for the Éire Óg club in an U14 semi-final against O’Hanrahans last Monday night.
A complaint by the father of one of his teammates is set to be investigated by the county’s underage GAA board.
The claims have also prompted an angry response from the National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism (NCCRI ) .
Adrian Tomlin and his wife were watching their son, Joe, play in goal for Éire Óg from the stand at Dr Cullen Park and he described how a group of young girls, encouraged by a group of adults nearby, shouted obscene and racial abuse at Teboga throughout the game.
“There were obscene racial comments like ‘kill the f***ing n***er’ and the like. It was ongoing throughout the match and Teboga was visibly upset,” said Mr Tomlin.
He said he pulled his wife away when she asked them to stop, because the group turned on her and she was in tears.
“I am beside myself, I am thinking of pulling my son from the sport,” he said, adding: “I come from the north of England where racial tension is a big problem and I bring up my children to be against this kind of behaviour.”
Teboga’s team manager Willie Quinlan said the player and his family did not want to talk about the matter, but revealed he had heard a lot of it on Monday night.
“When I asked him [Teboga] about it, he said ‘it’s just the usual, people are racist against my colour’. He knew where it was coming from but he doesn’t know who was saying it, he just said ‘it happens’.”

This is sadly inevitable given the nature of the GAA.
When anything "foreign" is looked down, this sort of incident is predictable .
I play soccer in Dublin and in most matches now we play against people from other nations and with different skin colours. They are well treated and they really enjoy themselves.
It is sad that a family has come to Ireland, taken the brave step of trying to playing to play GAA, even though the organisations outlook may be hostile to them and this is what they get in return.

I just saw that now.
Interesting that the topic title is very inconspicuous.
An attempt to brush it under the carpet?

Ah yes, the inclusiveness of the beautiful game is a beacon of hope to us all. Maybe one day we too can view our games in segreagated stadia with massive police presence - singing our rascist and sectarian songs at the top of our culturally sensitive voices.
But it would be terrible if this kind of behaviour becomes normalised to the extent that it is in soccer. A point I made in the other thread is why were the people involved allowed to continue doing it throughout the match?

Having played junior soccer for years myself in Dublin, I have witnessed first hand racist abuse doled out to foreigners including, shamefully, by my own team. So, your assertion that this kind of thing doesn`t happen in soccer circles in the capital is of the cloud-cuckoo variety or a barefaced lie.
BTW, say hello to the other boys on the SRFC Ultras forum for us, George. You`ve been lurking on AFR for long enough to know what I`m talking about.

There is two young lads from Nigeria playing with St. John`s (primary school that is in O` Loughlin`s territory ) , the guy (Wallace is his name, I think ) that plays full back will play for Kilkenny some day - he is a mix between Noel Hickey & Tommy Walsh (all the good bits ) , an absolute gem - his cousin plays half-forward / full forward and reminds me of Setanta O` hAlpin, a bit awkward but has a killer instinct.
I`ve seen them 3/4 times and I`ve never heard any rascist abuse towards them but a young lad from my club (was reported ) as calling a `Latin` looking lad on a another team (U16 ) a `nigger` - I wanted to throw the book at him but as the only witness was from the opposing team and he strongly denied it nothing happenend. I know he said it though as he is a `nasty, sneaky` young lad.

Yeah my brother is on Cumann na mBunscoil (spelling? ) down there and he reckons there is a Nigerian guy that is the best he has ever seen at that level. Didn`t catch the name. Might be Wallace.
Proper ignorance out of the kids. The adults need to be neutered, tarred and feathered.

Thats the same guy your brother mentioned - he is top class and has brialliant reading of the game. There was an article in the Kilkenny Voice a few weeks ago about them.
It will be interesting to see his progress over the next 4 - 6 years as I beleive he is a superb soccer player as well.

The fact that Carlow is involved reminds me of an incident from years ago.
I was going out with a girl from Carlow and we were having a drink in a pub - think it was Scraggs Alley - one night. I accidentally knocked over a lad`s pint and offered to buy him another one. He refused and started ranting and raving about `blow-ins` and `Wexford f*ckers taking our women`. I let it slide because he had a few equally deranged looking mates with him.
Girlfriend`s brother told me later on that he witnessed the same fella at a Carlow v London hurling match some years beforehand.
Yer man spent the whole duration of the first half shouting abuse at random London players - along the lines of `English b*stards` and `Brits out`. Somebody had to take him aside at half time and inform him that the Exiles are generally comprised of Irish players working in England as opposed to John Bull natives.

There are quite a few on the Myers thread who will be delighted to see this sort of thing and will defend it by saying ``He couldnt understand what they were shouting because he never went to school, like all the black kids, so it matters not a jott``. So onwards and upwards with us.

Eire Og played in the U 13 Feile in Birmingham recently and had 2 nigerians playing for them, one lad in the middle of the pitch was outstanding. Didnt get no abuse over here but he looks an outstanding prospect

Just on the Six-One News. The Carlow County Board are going to investigate the incident.
From the Six-One report, the incident was described as being young girls doing the taunting being egged on by adults.
Disgusting and disgraceful stuff. The adults shouldn`t be allowed inside a GAA ground again.
