After a quick glance I beleive no Irish boxer will face, a Cuban, Chinese, American, Russian, Uzbek or Khazak before the semi final. By which time if they are still there they will already have a medal. I am not a boxing expert but that looks pretty promising. Sutherland and Barnes got a bye as well which gets them even closer.

Sutherland and Barnes have to win two bouts each to receive Bronze medals... Very good opportunity for both.

Have they given Mick Dowling a chance to speak at length about the boxing draw yet? I have to say it looks pretty nice for Egan and Barnes.

Its about the only hope they have of winning something, dodging all the decent fighters and drawing a few stiffs from some loser country like Angola or somewhere

If McFlurry could drag himself away from IrfanView for a minute,
we might get an expert`s opinion on the draw : ) .

Wasn`t Mick 4th in the Discus in `68? Or was that Ronan Collins?

No nomad, Ronan Collins was 5th in the 105kg weightlifting division in Munich in `72.

That is 2 boxers through to the second round with Joyce and Egan having good chances of a medal.

Can someone post up the times the Irish boxers are fighting at on this thread if they hear them?
Great win today for Joyce, absolutely delighted for him. Gave a good interview on the bbc too. Their commentators were very impressed with the win.
He looked to be fighting very defensively and doing a lot of running away from yer man once he was a few points up but it was interesting to hear him say that he was fighting to a gameplan and can fight much better than that. The team seem very well prepared.
Boxing in the Olympics is by far the most interesting sport in my view.

I didn`t realise Joyce was fighting today, i checked the website and it didn`t have him down at all.
Great he won though.
Joyce and Nevin are best chances before Olympics, the draw could have changed that.
Ken Egan would really surprise me if he won a medal, he isn`t in same class as guys in his division. For the standard i thought he looked poor at times yesterday against an awful guy from Virgin Islands. Must be said in all the fights i`ve seen the refereeing has been poor, clear punches not been scored. I thought Egan scored about 34-35 points. And a fight between a brilliant Ukrainian and a Chinese guy was very badly scored. The right guy won for sure, but both scored way heavier.
I must say i don`t know anything about Paddy Barnes, but i do know Sutherland is talented, but very arrogant. He could sneak a medal though.

Yes, used to be the anchor man for Play The Game  (featuring Twink and Derek Davis )  too. I believe he had to give up the weightlifting just before Montreal in 1976 due to back trouble sadly.

You are thinking of Marty Whelan, polladdy. Ronan Collins is well known as a former Irish Olympian. There was even an article about it in the RTE Guide recently.

The bould Ronan was also into the Showbands as well, a real all rounder, and a sworn enemy of Louis Walsh.
