Cats dominance extends to All Stars list
Henry Shefflin looks a certainty for an eighth award
Thursday, 25 September 2008 23:25
Kilkenny`s all-conquering three in a row hurling team dominate this year`s Vodafone-sponsored GAA All Stars list, with a stunning 14 nominations.
Henry Shefflin is chasing his eighth award, which would bring him to within one off his county-man DJ Carey`s record haul of nine awards.
In all, eight counties are represented in the nominations, with League and Munster champions Tipperary enjoying the second highest number of nominees with nine.
Cork are rewarded for their nail-biting jousts with Clare, Galway, Tipperary and Kilkenny with seven nominations, while beaten All-Ireland finalists Waterford and Clare have five nominations each.
Offaly and Dublin both received two nominations, with Galway getting just one nominee in the form of Joe Canning.
Another milestone this year is the nomination of Richie Power for what would be his first award.
He will be hoping to join an elite club of one in terms of fathers and sons who have claimed hurling awards - the only combination so far to achieve this amazing double is fellow Kilkenny duo Fan and Philly Larkin.
Seven of last year`s winners are nominated again. They are Michael Kavanagh, Jackie Tyrrell, Tommy Walsh, Tony Browne, James `Cha` Fitzpatrick, Henry Shefflin and Eddie Brennan.
The awards will take place in the CityWest Hotel on 17 October.
The county breakdown is: Kilkenny 14, Tipperary 9, Cork 7, Clare 5, Waterford 5, Offaly 2, Dublin 2 and Galway 1.

Are you really leaving out 7-40 Eoin Kelly?!? He was favorite for player of the year before the final and top scorer in the final (although he did have a poor game ) . Joe Canning had a great game this year, but Eoin Kelly did score more than him in the next match that day. I simply can`t see how anyone can justify leaving him out.

There is fierce competition for the full forward awards. In fact how could you deny any of them (bar Tipps Eoin Kelly, don`t know how he got nominated this year ) . I would say your are looking at Brennan, Kelly and Mullane. Canning will have many to come but it would not be fair to exclude Kelly who was top scorer of the championship by a country mile and only had one bad game. Mullane has to get one.....prob scored more from play than anyone. Brennan is a shoe in after his 2 goals in the final.
Midfield is tough too, Lyng might loose out to McGrath there but that is very harsh on him.
Half Backs... I would go with Walsh Delaney and Browne.
Cork got a fair few nominations but I cant see them getting any awards....Waterford will tend to get them where they were nominated. It will be interesting to see who will get the goalkeeper.....Cummins is the default choice but does not deserve it this year. Ryan kept a clean sheet but how many shots did he save. Hennessy made a rake load of saves, but also let in a lot too.
Young playr of the year: Joe Canning
Hurler of the year: Eoin Larkin
There are 2 threads on this one should be delete d.

It`s the only one I`m iffy on, maybe they will give Joe just yhoty and a full line spot to Kelly. On the basis of the overall championship Kelly does deserve it ahead of him but then theres Cannings Cork and League final performances. Liam Cahill got an All-Star in `96 or `97 for 15 minutes hurlin so who knows what way the meedja experts would vote.
Fairest result - YHOTY to Canning , full line spot to Kelly.

Ben O Connor is a shoo in for Cork, he almost single handedly dragged them back into the games v Galway and Clare.
Waterford will get one and that will be between Mullane and Kelly. Impossible to see Kelly not getting one. Mullane was subbed in a couple of games. Conor O`Mahony will get Browne`s and Cummins will get goalkeeper. The only way I see Waterford getting two is if they give Joe Canning young hurler of the year but not an all star, as they have done a couple of times of late. Mullane deserves one for sure, the competition is intense.

What age is Tommy Walsh???
5 All Stars already!! I`d say he`s going to set a record before he retires (as long as shefflin hangs up the boots in the next few years! )

There is no way Shefflin should get one this year, he scored hardly anything from play, had a decent game against Cork. Cummins is the same. These guys are great players but seem to pick up all stars very easily...to think Mullane only has one.

Im completely biased but after watching the semi and the final a few times, no he should. He was brilliant in both games, set up lots of scores, was definitely one of the most influential 6 forwards this year by a distance, and his touch is actually better than before he was injured.
Hurler of the year 2009 - get stuck in.
P.S. Henry baby will be sleeping a bit better now too as it gets older so no more sleepless nights for the chap. I wonder how many people knew he had a child with his wife? Some players have to advertise the fact, different strokes i suppose........

Agree that his touch ,particularly in the final ,was phenomenal.
Just think he was quiet enough while playing in a rampant Kilkenny team. Not saying he isn`t a great player.

Delighted to see 2 Dubs nominated,.
Based on the matchs that I saw, I`m not sure that Fallon really earned his nomination this year. (Did he have a stormer vs Cork in the summer? ) .

Fair enough chief. victim of his standards maybe.
His likability amongst fellow players and the media might secure it for him though.

The goalie is the one that always causes a bit of debate every year, PJ didn`t let in a goal all year if I am not mistaken, hard to argue against that, granted his has a savage (in a good way :- ) !! ) backline in front of him.

Take it easy Kid, anyone who watched Up for the Final would have known it because his wife was on the show and she talked about it.

I don`t know TTB. I have to say. I thought this thing about having children and keeping it a secret went out with the dark ages. Since the 80s it`s been more or less ok to let people know you`ve had a kid.

Throughout history how may championship winning goalkeepers have kept a clean sheet for the duration of that season?
