`Irish Examiner`
New Cork row looms over McCarthy reappointment
By Michael Moynihan and Barry O’Donovan
GERALD MCCARTHY received an emphatic endorsement last night from Cork County Board delegates to continue as the county’s hurling coach for another two years — but already tensions are simmering among Cork’s hurlers over the reappointment.
Delegates voted overwhelmingly (88-6 ) to ratify the recommendation of the committee charged with bringing a name before the board, but it has emerged that the two Cork hurlers on the seven-man committee did not vote on the nomination of McCarthy due to what they perceived as serious problems with the appointment process.
It is also understood that up to 10 Cork hurlers met with McCarthy at the Imperial Hotel yesterday to appraise him of their views and concerns.
McCarthy is the first Cork hurling boss to be appointed under the terms of the peace deal brokered in February by Labour Relations Commission chief Kieran Mulvey following the Cork players’ strike last winter. Mulvey recommended that a seven-man committee be appointed in hurling and football, consisting of five county board members and two current players, to come up with the new manager for each code.
However, it has been claimed that the process as it related to the hurling coach was flawed. The two players on the committee, John Gardiner and Donal Óg Cusack, did not participate in the crucial vote which recommended that Gerald McCarthy continue as manager. The duo were part of a special committee which also featured county board chairman Mick Dolan, county board PRO Bob Ryan, secretary Frank Murphy and delegates Dan Warren and Denis Harrington.
It is understood dissatisfaction with the procedures involved in the committee’s deliberations was a major issue in the players’ reluctance to vote. Because they voted via a straight majority, the committee proceeded to recommend that McCarthy continue as manager, but it is unclear whether the absence of a full vote throws a question mark over the committee’s recommendation.
However, the fresh tensions in Cork threaten to destroy an uneasy truce that has existed since the strike action was resolved with the departure of appointed football coach Teddy Holland in February.
The final agreement also precluded the option of another strike by the players in the future, which may leave some with little option but to walk away from inter-county careers.
The Irish Examiner understands that a delegation of 10 players from the Cork hurling panel had a lengthy meeting with McCarthy yesterday morning which ended inconclusively.
McCarthy is already on the lookout for backroom staff with the departure of Martin Bowen to take over as manager at his club, Erin’s Own, and the resignation on Monday of team trainer Jerry Wallis. With Sarsfields winning the senior hurling championship, it is possible that Teddy McCarthy could replace Bowen. McCarthy was a Cork football select or briefly under Teddy Holland earlier this year.
As expected, there will be no change in the Cork football management for 2009. Conor Counihan’s ratification for a two-year term was always going to be a more straightforward decision. The Aghada man took over in difficult circumstances last February, having missed an entire pre-season and two national league games.
Avoidance of relegation in that league and delivering a Munster title along with a decent showing before falling after a replay to Kerry in an All-Ireland semi-final amounted to an impressive first campaign as senior football manager, given the lack of preparation. He will retain the same select ors — Ger O’Sullivan, Peadar Healy, Terry O’Neill and Jim Nolan — as last season.

Any interview I read with a Cork player this summer was full of praise for McCarthy. Could it be they were telling porkies???

Comedy. I`d be a happy man if Cork didn`t win another game while the likes of Cusack, Gardiner, Sullivan and the rest of the GPA coven are still involved. In terms of what they are interested in, it`s 30% hurling and 70% politics. Totally wrong. Get on with your hurling while you have a chance.

There are two sides, of course. I believe that the board (Frank ) didn`t engage in the select ion process with the players and at 5 to 2 they would be outnumbered anyway. No surprise there - the players were foolish to think otherwise last winter. Ironically the players` reps (Cusack and Gardiner - oft villified herein ) were reputed to support McCarthy`s continued tenure, but other players weren`t happy.
Anyway I`m sick of the lot of them. My rule of thumb would be always to support the side that Frank isn`t on, but I`m getting tired of it.

I agree its time to leave it. I know quite a number of the players and would have been sympathetic. I am not a fan of GMc as manager but I think the time has come to knuckle down, win a few all irelands and then engage again.
The cork public are slowly getting sick of this.Don`t end up like fianna fail with the pensioners.

Well this is the problem with player power and their input into the select ion of a manager. Opinions are like a*****s, everyone`s got one. It`s very rare you`ll have a panel of 30 players who think the manager is doing a great job, there`s always be some discontent, so all you need is some of the dominant characters in a dressing room to think someone not doing things the way they`d like and then you`ve these sorts of problems. Who knows if the players are all 100% happy with Cody, but as he`s successful it dosent matter, what if they`d ditched him before he got the chance to build them into the force they are now.

Are we facing another winter of trouble from the Cork non achievers ?
Teddy Holland was right "abject capitulation" against Kerry.
20 mins hurling against Kilkenny until Eoin Larkin got into gear.
No manager problems in Tyrone or Kilkenny

Cusack can`t be taken seriously any more. He`s like a Russian Communist. My way or the high way. Only a fool would believe that the strike had no effect on Cork this year. Does he want the same thing again next year??

They lost 5 championship matches under him in two years, the question should be why is he still there?.Its easy to blame it all on Cusack but the CB appointed Gearld to send out a clear message to the players, how can that be any good for the future of Cork hurling both sides bickering like children.

(i have the greatest of respect for kilkenny so if this rant upsets anyone there, then i apologise in advance ) We are the supreme sporting county from running hurling, rugby, soccer, bowling, tiddly winks, rowing etc. Being from cork means there in an onus to be the best. Its a birth thing. You don`t have it if you are from another county. We get to go to Croker every year (prob more than the dubs ) . We are at least an equal backbone to Iimerick in the H cup team. We have plenty of athletics medals. We have the best schools.

The band aid covering the festering tumor of self importance is coming apart. The future of Cork hurling is perceived by the few to be theirs to decide. The GAA community in Cork granted the wish of the Cork Hurlers to allow two players on a committee with voting priveledge to elect a manager, and what do they do! well wouldnt you just know it, they did not vote. Then we have ten hurlers meeting with G Mac to appraise him of their concerns. The hurlers need to tak a step back right now, for I believe that the members of the GAA family in Cork have had enough of these losers and will act appropriately. The team, the Management, the Board, the Club players and the membership acceded to the players humilitating demands when they threw a previous tantrum. This resulted in real couragious volunteers having their character smeared as a thank you from the players, it should never have been allowed, and is unforgiven and a blot on the proud tradition of Cork GAA. The players have by their actions shown scant regard for what their primary role is and have failed accordingly. Rather than look inward they look outward and seek to introduce any and all excuses as to their shortcomings, no one is spared from their self serving attacks and childish tantrums. I played hurling for many years along with thousands of others in a time when we held ourselves accountable for our shortcomings, we left the tremendous work of the unpaid volunteers to those that could never be thanked or repaid enough, the rude and insulting remarks by some of the immature spoilt brats of Cork Hurling which were laid at the doorstep of these volunteers, will never deflect them or the membership from recognising who the true dignified unpaid servants of the GAA are. Cork GAA has a choice to make, a democratic choice of the way forward, the membership must not be deflected by the selfish few but must hold fast and true to the wishes of the majority, the responsibility and appreciation of compromise brings rewards fom real honourable men not from those of the selfish me culture wjho happen to make up the Cork hurling company.
