Can anyone get a price on John McIntyre for the Galway job? He looks to be a certainty with his team of Joe Connolly, John Hardiman and John Moylan .

This looks like the combination to win it alright. Hardiman would command the respect of most of the current crop having brought them through at underage level on his run to winning 2 minors in a row. I have had the personal pleasure of being coached by Hardiman and while he is a gentleman and wonderful coach he is also hard nosed enough to get results.

After many years of threatening it McIntyre has finally thrown his hat in the ring. Unlike Bond, any club he has worked with in Galway would have nothing but praise for him. What he did with Clarenbridge, Kinvara and Sarsfields was phenomenal. Another man who won`t suffer fools and he has the pedigree and knowledge of the galway hurling base to warrant the nod on this occasion.

Joe Connolly will get the nostalgia vote.

Moylan will pull the Beagh & Galway Bay FM listeners vote!

Would it be fair to say that it looks like it might boil down to a straight shoot-out between Bond, Cooney, Coleman vs McIntyre, Connolly, Hardiman?

Ya it looks that way...if it does i`ll be firmly nailing my colours to McIntyres mast. Despite my grá for the legend that is Joe Cooney, he has zero top level coaching and management experience whereas McIntyre, Hardiman and Moylan have (i`m not sure if Joe Connolly has trained teams previously??? )

I am delighted with McIntyres line up. He knows Galway hurling and Galway hurling politics inside out.

How will he handle the Tribune situation?

There is also a push by one of the board for Vincent Mullins, dont ask me why.

Joe Connolly will add some popularity to the line up but 1980 is a long time ago and I`m not quite sure what he`ll offer??

Agree with you.
The Tribune situation will involve him having to delegate his editorial to someone else. Not sure what else would be affected? He obviously feels he can combine both jobs anyway.
For me McIntyre is the standout candidate based on his experience  (at both club and intercounty )  and his almost unrivalled knowledge of the hurling scene in Galway.
And it can`t hurt that he`s not a native either.

Pushing for Mullins could be a result of not wanting to give McIntyre the job, for whatever reason.
Joe Connolly`s presence could help nullify whatever advantage Cooney`s presence gives Bond`s campaign  (they are both totemic figures in Galway hurling without having done a lot of coaching )  and might be crucial in swinging support behind McIntyre.

In fairness Mullins has managed Galway to 2 U21 titles in the last few years which should put him in the frame at least..

Think we should have pushed the boat out to convince McIntyre of takin the job in Tipp a few years ago. Not sure when exactly he was interested but i`m sure he would have proved to be a far more successful manager than all those previous to Liam Sheedy at present. Think Galway would be best served by having an outsider in charge again.

I am surprised McIntyre is putting himself forward again considering how he was mistreated by the co. board in the 90`s when we put his name out there. I remember distinctly one time he was the favourite. However, the co. board wanted nothing to do with him as he had written some articles in the Tribune critical of it. In the end he was defeated, however, the most headwrecking aspect of the vote was the fact that one club actually voted in a club meeting for their hurling board delegate to cast their vote for McIntyre but when it came to it, he decided not to! Pity as the hurling championship then was more more open than now and he would have done a superb job. Hope he gets it this time.

Hope he gets it... I would be more inclined to support him as a coach and his team as select ors than Bond`s motley crew.

Agree re: Cooney, a legend, but not sure what if anything he could bring to the coaching table .

It is not a vote . There is a committee of 5 and they have the power to select  the manager . It will be very interesting to see who the two outside people are . They will hold the balance of power .

Does the pick not have to be ratified by the clubs?

Ya, the 5 man select ion committee will interview all the nominees and then propose a management team to the club delegates who will say yay or nay

Is cathal connolly not on the castlegar team, I just don`t want to see a repeat of Conor Hayes playing his nephew on the senior team when he was clearly not up to the standard, that`s all no need to get yer knickers in a twist

Cathal Connolly was on the Galway team in 2006 and to be honest I thought they gambled starting him against Kilkenny. He hadnt enough games played at that level to be thrown into the deep end against a team of that calibre. He promised in substitute runs in earlier games.

The clubs have no say . They will just be given the name by the committee . The two extra people are very interesting choices - Pat Egan and Conor Hayes .
Cathal Connolly is a son of John and not Joe .
