I just read today`s article in the Sunday Tribune, and must say that the old game without Flynn will be at a huge loss.
An incredible talent.

Flynn has been a shell of himself for the last few years. Didn`t seem like he had the drive anymore - I think the injuries started to tell.
A great servant to the Deise for the past 10-15 years through all the grades.

That performance in the Munster Final of 2004 stands out among his many great performances in a Waterford shirt. Such a mercurial talent, that free was awe-inspiring. Got his deserved all-star. One of the greats of his playing time

I thought the high point of his career was the 04 semi final vs Kilkenny when he more or less carried the fight against Kilkenny himself. He scored 13 out of 18 points that day.
One All Star award seems like a very small return for his career I have to say.

he gives gerald mccarthy plenty of backing in the same article. Interesting statistic too that he and DJ are the only two modern day players to be in the top 20 all time scorers in hurling.
Some of his frees were amazing.

Superb servant to Waterford hurling. Produced some stunning scores over the years. Definitely deserved his all star when it eventually came.

That free still gives me nightmares, he was a man Cork feared!
Happy retirement Paul, I can sleep easier now!
By the way I`d say you`ll be welcome in Cork anytime for a few pints.
The interview today was like a breath of fresh air! Well done boy!

I hope Frank wasn`t wearing the boot at the time .....
Seriously though, Flynn was blessed with great hands and was a merciless finisher. His well-documented fitness issues made his great days all the more impressive.
Given what was at stake and what it led to, his performance v Cork in 2002 sticks out in my mind but he had plenty of big performances throughout his career.
Hurling`s loss will be golf`s gain I suppose!

First time i saw him was v Wolfe Tones in `96 munster club campaign.
He only score 3-1 from play that day. Great wrists.
Should have left the commentary on the cork situation out of what would otherwise have been a nice retirement article

Must say he was one of the best stickmen I`ve ever seen and unfortunately for Waterford I feel his best days coincided with a time when he battled mainly alone up front. What I mean by this is that his best days seemed to be over when Mullane Shanahan and Kelly really came to the fore up front. Ist time I really realised how good he was was in the TIpp Waterford game in Páirc Uí Chaíomh in `98.

Fantastic player and great interview.
To be fair on Flynn the context re Cork was the difference Gerald McCarthy made to the whole Waterford set up.
His comments re Cork are true, especially given that one of their cheerleaders Kieran Shannon said as much on the opposite page. (refering to the difference between how John Allen and Gerald McCarthy managed ) .

A class player. Was delighted for him when he finally got his long-overdue all-star.
Best of luck to him in his retirement.

I`ll always remember that 100 yard free at the death, sitting just a few yards away at the front of the new stand.
That point to level against Limerick in 2003 in the last minute of the first game was incredible too.
The injuries really took their toll in later years and also the way the game has changed. Looking at the Waterford forward line in 2008, it was hard to see where he would have a role. And yet I still remember a superb ground shot to goal against Cork in the 2005 Munster semi, a day when he could hardly walk with one of his legs severely strapped up. And his renaissance in 2007 from which I remember 2 glorious runs, in the munster final when Brian Murray denied him, and the first quarter final against Cork met with an incredible save from Donal Og, before Molumphy goaled from the follow up. When he set off, it was like time stood still. It was so sad to see him hauled off in the semi that year, and from what we read subsequently about the breakdown of his relationship with Justin, maybe not as surprising now.
He was a true artist of this wonderful game of ours. Great great player, and my favourite from those I have seen.

Not that these news has come as a shock, but still what a servant, a hero and great role model. It definitely wont be the same heading to Thurles/Cork next June without him on the team. Can I just say Munster Final 2004 that goal, my favourite Paul Flynn moment! What a talent, best of luck to him

was that the day Ray Whitty left in 3 soft goals for ballygunner? Wolfe tones bet the gunners by 4 - 8 to 4-9 or something. That was a good game in thurles.
Best of luck flynn

paul flynn is a hurling genius
3 scores stand out for me -
1 ) equalising goal against clare in `98 - still sends the hair on my neck standin up
2 ) Scored the winnin point against De La Salle in the County Final a couple of years ago - struck of his stick from miles out in horrendous conditions
3 ) A point he got over by the wall around the 65 in Walsh Park against Mount Sion in the `99 County Final - facing away from the goal he flicked a ball up pulled over his shoulder straight over the bar - Legend
