Speculation George Lee will be FG byelection candidate
Does anybody else see major ethical issues with this? He has been providing (fair? ) comment on the Govt`s handling of the economic crisis for a few years now and now he is reportedly going to run for the opposition?

The celebrity-isation of politics continues.
It`s not all that surprising. Grassroot party organisations, especially in urban areas have decayed to the point where they exist on little more than paper.
Someone like George Lee coming in with a ready-made national profile helps get over that.
I`m just surprised that FG haven`t approached former member Michael McDowell yet.
He`d have to bide his time, but he`s a potential future leader of FG (you read it here first! ) .

This is just a few steps further on the road that RTE employees have been following for years. Thought of a good idea for a programme? Great! Go to an independant production company (or form one yourself ) , produce the programme and sell it to RTE. The best of both worlds, self-employment and a nice handy pensionable salary from the Licence Payers. No problem.
Next time you see an RTE `pesonality` on a documentary outside his / her normal brief, follow the credits to the end where it gives the name of the production company.
Of course I am not implying that any of the work would have been done on RTE`s time. Perish the thought.

This decay is just as bad in rural areas. In this regard, we are back to the era of the rotten boroughs.

Here`s the thing. Lee is an acknowledged expert on economic issues. Is he not exactly the kind of person who should be in the Dail, and indeed in government? Look at who FF are running. Showing nothing but contempt for the electorate as usual. At least FG have gone and got a candidate that is credible on the major issue facing the country. FF get yet another member of the extended FF family who is employed by Anglo Irish Bank FFS.

However qualified he is its gonna be difficult for him to shed that image he has of a doom and gloom merchant...Can he kiss the babies, press the flesh and all that....They really aren`t qualities you should need for government but still need to be done to get the foot in the door...

I`m a bit surprised that Lee seems to be the FG mystery man.
I had anticipated Ivan Yates or Peter Sutherland for this job.
Lee would be a good choice. Put simply, the more economists in politics the better (not counting the obvious banking/property industry goons ) .

Well, being a TV journalist and commenting on economic issues is one thing, being a politician and being in a position to do something about it is another.
Were FG to get into power, it`s unlikely that Kenny (or whoever is leading FG at that time ) would bring Lee to Cabinet at the cost of p**********************ing off long serving blueshirts.
Instead, they`d probably make him serve his time either on the back benches, or, if he`s lucky, appoint him Minister of State.
I`d agreed on Shay Brennan though. Not a particularly credible candidate. And having dillied and dallied for so long over letting himself be nominated he has further undermined himself.
I don`t know much about the constituency, but playing the card of a sympathy-vote/appeal-to-the-Brennan-machine doesn`t seem likely to wash in the current political climate.

This will copperfasten FGs image with Bruton, and now Lee on board, of the party of fiscal responsibility and competence.
A good move for FG. Not sure if its a good move for G. Lee.

RTE News at one has stated that he is expected to be unveiled as the FG candidate this evening.
Will he have to step down from the RTE job with immediate effect?

He was ambushed nicely by O`Rourke on the news at one. After prodding him to the extent that he started to lose his cool, the bould Sean then asked him his thoughts on the need for politicians to "have a thick skin"! Ouch!

Don`t agree with you there JHume on the Shay Brennan issue. I`m from the constituency (won`t be voting for him so that doesn`t come into it ) and I can see him making it if he`s got much in the way of ability. The resons are:
1. Seamus was hugely popular in the local area, he did a lot for the local people and was always seen as a local politition who happened to be also at the national level.
2. No one will have the balls to shut the door in the face of Shay knowing that he`s campaining for his dead fathers seat. This at least gives him a chance to say his piece that most FF candidates wouldn`t get.
3. Because Seamus died before all of this blew up, his good name is largely intact. Obviously he was involved in the whole mess but not having him on the TV annouincing cuts, tax`s etc means that there isn`t the same level of backlash towards his name as towards other FF individuals. In a way he`s prob a bit of a nostalgic link back to the good `oul times.
Thats just my reading of the situation and when you take what seamus was polling then there is some leway for disgruntled voters and still winning the seat. All up to the young lad now.

The fact that he works for Anglo Irish Bank should put paid to his chances.

Is he not low enough level? Its a bad association no matter what but he can play the minnow card and go on about how he saw problems but couldn`t do anything about it but if he was a TD he could..........hmm wonder does he need a campaign manager???

Perhaps you have a point but their are other major ethical issues with the crowd that are there at the moment but is their room for two economists in FG you can`t have two bulls in the same field

To be fair his colleague gave him a good grilling on this very issue on the Lunchtime News.
Its also equally fair to say that George didn`t take too kindly to it and I suspect his colleague then backed off somewhat in his tone.
But as George will expect others to be not so lenient his relatively thin skin might not be able to endure the attacks he`ll be subjected to

Hmmmm….the choice between a lowly bank employee and a well regarded economist with a history of uncovering bank corruption and producing pragmatic economic solutions. Considering this is the constituency which until the last election always returned a safe PD seat, is predominantly middle class and has the highest level of University attendance, there can only be one outcome.

Agreed - Lee was approached by Fine Gael to run in the 2002 election but of course he knew their a***s were going to be kicked in that election so he chose to decline at that stage which was a wise decision but he certainly is an opportunist.

I thought so too (as is obvious from my earlier post ) but I just heard him on Newstalk at lunchtime and he pointed out that, not only has he no cushy semi state pension (he`s on defined contibution for some reason ) but he is throwing in the RTE job in advance of the election. ie no safety net if it goes astray. Fair play to him, at least he has an education and he is not relying on family connections to get elected which is more than can be said for the bulk of our TDs

Your wrong Deise Vu, he is still guaranteed a job in RTE even if he fails in the election. He is taking leave of absence, he has not resigned his employment in RTE, only his post. Our George is no fool..

"All politics is local" - Thomas O`Neill (longtime Speaker of the House in the U.S. Congress )
Many a politition has been elected when his opposite number is better qualified, more experienced and more reknowned for the post. It can come down to the smallest thing in a persons attitude that alianates him/her from the electorate.

Interesting perspective Clash.
It`ll be some contest, and it will be interesting to see if the family thing works out for the young Shay.
What do you make of his procrastination over his candidacy? Will it damage him?
He could have spent the last several months campaigning, but as it is he has held off to just a couple of weeks before the election is about to take place and is facing someone with a massive profile.
