Since 1984 we have been through so many goalkeepers: Tommy Kenny, Peter Murphy, John Commins, Richie Burke, Morgan Darcy, Pat Costello, Damien Howe, Michael Crimmins, Liam Donaghue, Colm Callinan and James Skehill. I am sure i left out one or two.
Commins had the most success but was he the best of the lot?
Richie Burke wasnt bad but came along at a bad time,Just want to hear some of the opinions out there.

Commins has to top the list because of his success.
Skehill has all the ability and size to be a top goalie

Darcy was the outstanding one talent wise for me.He made a bad mistake I think against Wexford and that was the end.Lads from his side of the county don`t get a fair shake

Darcy is from Moycullen. Won an U21 All Ireland in 1993 and played senior championship in 1996 v Wexford.

Looking back over old games I can`t help but think that although Commins had most success, he was far from the bast shot-stopper. Although he was a decent penalty taker!!
D`Arcy was a very good goalie. I also thought Costello and to a slightly lesser extent Burke were also very competent.
I`d have to say best two were D`Arcy and Costello. Worst two were Donoghue and Crimmins.

Well Liam Donoghue was by far the worst, i honestly dont know how he spent so long there. Did he ever make a save when it mattered? No.
There`s a goalkeeper from Craughwell called Aidan Ryan who i`ve seen play many times. I think he was brought in to the Galway panel a few years ago but after 1 poor game was gone.
He is an exceptional goalkeeper in my view and should be given another chance.

Howe was a bit of a character shouting at his backs and wasn`t a bad shotstopper. I think Skehill is a very good shotstopper if he cut out the stupid things like rushing out from goal when there`s no need.

No contest in my eyes.Has to be John Commins, he was the most dependable goalkeeper Galway had in the last 25 years by a country mile.

Saw a re-run of `that match` recently.
Looked like the game was lost before that goal anyway ?

Darcy got man of the match in the u-21 All ireland final in 93.I also saw him play in the county u 21 final for Moycullen against castlegar he got the Tribune star of the week for that game.Kept Moycullen in the game early and they won by a point.Savage reflexes and shotstopping both days.
Commins let in 5 in 1990 final and was never a good shotstopper.Burke was the same solid but nothing spectacular.Crimmins and Donoghue not intercounty standard Howe I didn`t see enough of

Commins kept clean sheets in 87, 88 but let in 4 in 86 and 5 in 90.
He should have stopped Kevin Hennessy`s ground shot early in the 90 final.

Was it Howe that used to wear the bandana in goals sometimes? And then you had Devine from Abbey Duniry who had the Phil Brown-esque perma-tan!! Both were decent Goalies but were more worried about how they looked.
I remember seeing Kenneth Walsh from Carnmore in club games and he was absolutely fantastic. I could never understand how he wasn`t on the county panel. I heard at one stage that he declined a call up but I don`t know the background as to why.

It just shows really that there hasn`t been a stand out goalie in Galway in the last 25 years. Any opinions on why?

I would agree that Kenneth Walsh was the best club goalie in Galway for years but was never tried for the county. Wouldn`t rate Richie Burke at all, He used to turn his arse to the ball all the time. Am also surprised Liam Donohue lasted so long.
Hopefully James Skehill will be the answer now. Commins had to go after 1990 and the five goals.

this topic should be retitled least useless galway keeper of the last 25 years.
galway are the only county that have not even produced one solid keeper in that time
you might as well argue over your favourite cod liver oil or the best tinned corned beef on the market.
there must be such a thing but really who cares.
the best galway forward of the last 25 years, now theres a serious discussion to be had.

I am afraid i have to agree twiceasnice97.
they have never remotely come close to producing a goalkeeper in the class of Brendan Cummins, Fitzhenry, Cusack, Fitzgerald, The Quaids, Brian Mullins, Stephen Byrne, Clinton Hennessy, various Kilkenny keepers. And it has cost them.
