I hope no-one actually watched these - a terrible borefest. But the results are always interesting.

What did people think of the winners? I was surprised to see The Hurt Locker win both director and picture, thought they would split them with it and Avatar.

Not surprised that The Hurt Locker won because the writing has been on the wall as regards that for the last few weeks. Good movie but a bit over rated in my opinion. Personally I would have voted for Inglorious Basterds.

I have not seen the Hurt Locker yet so i cant pass judgement however i agree with siurboy Inglorious Basterds was brilliant and I dont think I have seen a more purely enjoyable movie in quite a while. However it lwould never have a hope of winning the Best picture simply because it is a film which is not filled with good intenetions and the oscars voters love to award these well meaning films. You only have to look at the amount of films about the holocaust or about mentally handicapped people that have won oscars.A film about the holocaust or about mentally handicapped people seems to be one of the main criteria for winning an oscar.

Seen both - think the Hurt Locker was a better film, though IB is good as well..

Glad Avatar didn`t get very much - thought it was a load of corny cliche rubbish.

Save yourself a few euro and two hours, The Hurt Locker will be excoriated in years to come. Its about as realistic as Spongebob, but without the humour.

You can see why Hollywood went for it it has all the usual clichés, the decent, maverick bomb disposal genius who can`t cope with civilian life, the black sargent who just wants to get out alive and the decent all-american youngster who is conflicted because he should have shot what appeared to be an innocent bystander and his buddy died because he didn`t.  (It`s hell what the Yanks have to put up with as they go about putting the world to rights ) .

The maverick does things like whip off his protective suit to make it easier to defuse a bomb which was no longer a threat to human life, he also insists on defusing a booby trapped body so he can bring the body back for burial. Yeah right. This is in an army which would nuke a small town if they thought it woud save one of their own getting a hangnail.

As boring and predictable  a year as there`s ever been. Not one shock and a fairly poor crop of movies in comparison certainly to last year and others too.

No I stole it from Tropic Thunder although they are right just look at the amount of awards films about the holocaust and mental illness get compared to the amount of these films that are made.

Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man:All he did was mumble a few phrases for two hours.
Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump:Just spoke in a dumb voice that any of us on this forum could do just as well as he did it.

Forrest Gump won best picture in 1994 ahead of Pulp Fiction and Shawshank Redemption. One flew over the Cuckoos Nest won in 1975 ahead of Jaws and Dog Day Afternoon which were much better films. You just have to look at some of the choices for best picture over the years and wonder.Hollywood likes to award films that have great intentions i.e look at Slumdog Millionaire last year although a good film was not a patch on the Dark knight which did not even get nominated because it was a comic book film and hollywood would loathe to give its top award to a mere comic book film.

Titanic in 1997 ahead of LA Confidential
Kramer vs Kramer in 1979 ahead of Apocalypse now
Rocky in 1976 ahead of Network an All the Presidents Men
Ordinary People ahead of Raging Bull in 1980.
Rain man Ahead of Mississippi Burning in 1988.
The English patient ahead of Fargo in 1996
Shakespeare in Love ahead of Saving private Ryan and the Thin Red Line in 1998.
I could go on and on.

The Oscars constantly give awards to actors for performances that don’t deserve awards but ignore their best performances.i.e. Paul Newman, John Wayne ,Al Pacino.

The fact is the though there is no precise way of judging whether a film or performance is great and thus the Oscars are pointless. They have now become a big back clapping session for Hollywood and are no longer an event about the film industry but a celebrity event as there is more talk about the dresses the women attending wear than about the actual films and also you just have to look at the amount of celebrities that attend that have nothing to do with the films nominated.Rant over.

Possibly you never heard of `Shock and Awe` tactics or maybe Hiroshima or Nagasaki. I don`t have time for a history lesson, the internet is there for you if you want to check out how the Yanks run their many wars.

I don`t even disagree with those tactics but don`t try to tell me the best film of the year is some comic book, George Bush version of how the war in Afghanistan is being conducted.

I`m more into gritty realism myself so forgive me for having an opinion.

I haven`t seen any of the nominated films: I`ve been a fan of Kathryn Bigelow, the director of `Hurt Locker` since her first film, `The Loveless`, and have it, `Blue Steel`, and `Point Break` on DVD, but for various reasons never got around to catching HL in the cinema.
`Avatar` I decided to pass on as its big `selling point` seems to be that its in 3-D: I`m prepared to wait until they have 3-D films with good storylines, which can stand on their own two feet.

I think usually Academy voters tend to vote for films with good solid parts for actors so I always reckoned HL would get the nod

How many Holocast films have won an oscar? All I can think of is Schlinders List.

I haven`t seen the Hurt Locker, but I saw Avatar and Inglorious Basterds, they were both rubbish. This must be the worst year for films, in a long time  (probably 1991 ) .

Sophies Choice,The Pianist,The Reader,Judgement at Nuremberg,Defiance .These films all got oscar nominations and there are probably more. But it is a fact that when a film is made about the holocaust it gets a huge deal of attention from the Oscar voters some of it deserved some of it not.

The great thing about Inglorious Basterds was that it is one of the very few films that actually portrayed jews as being something other than victims and perfect innocent human beings.I know the story was completely fictional but at least it has a sense of fun and enjoyment about it something which cant be said about the vast majority of films that get recognised by the Oscars.i also thought that Drag me To Hell was one of the most enjoyable films made last year however you would not get the oscars recognising something that is as much fun as drag me to hell.

When talking about Holocaust pictures and the Oscars, people are often referring to acting / directing awards moreso than best picture winners. Off the top of my head i can think of:

Kate Winslet - The Reader  (Best Actress )
Roman Polanski - The Pianist  (Best Director )
Roberto Beningi - Life is Beautiful  (Best Actor )
Adrien Brody - The Pianist  (Best Actor )
Meryl Streep - Sophies Choice  (Best Actress )

Also, whilst you mightn`t have enjoyed "Inglorious Basterds", to call it rubbish is just plain stupid. It`s well acted, written and directed. Just cos you didn`t get it doesn`t make it rubbish.

How do you know its comic book have you been there?I`m sure its been given the Hollywood treatment just as I`m sure Braveheart was not a verbatim historical account of William Wallace .Gritty realism how the f do you know whats real

She seemed fine to me. For a change Sandy is a down to earth American actress without the histrionics of Paltrow and Berry in their acceptance speeches a few years back.
