Listening to the radio this morning & some clare politician was on saying how a motion has been passed that they would approach the higher education authority to have UL change it`s name to Clare/Limerick University.
Thoughts?

Why would they do that? It`d be different if the University Grounds were on the Clare side of the river which was part of Clare once. And as many Clare people go to University in Galway as go to Limerick.
Have they nothing better to do be doing than going around passing useless motions like this?

This reminds me of the time some French supporters flew into Dublin for a Munster match because they didn`t realise there was a closer airport to Limerick and had they known they would have flown to Shannon. Somebody (probably some Councillor, it`s always Councillors ) then was asking for the airport to be changed to Shannon / Limerick Airport.

Part of UL is in Clare now, I presume that`s why he brought it up, it`s just a way for Cathal Crowe to get some publicity, I wouldn`t take it too seriously lads.

The campus has expanded considerably on Clare side of river. Student accomodation, Academy of Music/Dance, Medical Faculty, Chamber Orchestra all on Clare side.
Should rezone/transfer lands to Limerick. Stupid having different planning authorities and shared services, etc.

Are you another idiot? Go check your facts!
Westbury, Corbally, Gillogue and Cappavilla are all in Clare.
To check you could have looked at google maps or check ClareCoCo planning applications on line.......

Whats the story with all this talk around giving more land to Limerick County Council? What will that involve if they are to get it pushed through?
As a Clare person, I am completely opposed to it but I don`t know much about whats going on behind the scenes. Can anyone enlighten me a bit?

As a Limerick person I`m completely opposed to it too. John Gormley is going to push Westbury and Shannon banks into Limerick because when they get flooded the rescue personel have to come from Ennis and not Limerick. So basically, a border is going to be moved because of poor planning.
Limerick lost that area to county Clare in the 1600`s, why the village idiots that run Limerick city council want it back is beyond me.

Parteen, Westbury, Corbally etc are of course in Co Clare but for all other purposes they are part of the Limerick City region. Just because you are hyper sensitive about it dont jump down my throat.
And dont call me an idiot you f**==ccing moron.

Is it definately going ahead or what will it take to have it ratified? Will the people living there have any say? I know that in places that would become part of Limerick, a lot of people are vehemently opposed to it.

It`s not definitely going ahead. My understanding, just from what I heard. Is that John Gormley makes a decision and that`s it.

If this re-zoning was ratified, how soon would it come into effect?
Would it mean then that any young lad from Clonlara for argument sake would no longer be able to hurl for Clare? Or does anyone have any idea how that works?

Drive ahead with it so I reckon, we could have Parteen & Clonlara added into city division.
A small compensation for the once exclusive naming rights on the university.

The extension wouldn`t be that big. It would go as far as parteen at the most. I`d imagine parteen would continue to play in Clare and there players would continue to play for clare.

Has there been any opinion pole done in Parteen and Clonlara about this happening?

What a plonker
What a plonker of the highest order...!!!!
Is this what that plonker is paid for.
Jobs disappearing from Shannon and Limerick at the rate of knots.
The roads in the county are in scutter after the bad weather
What is being done to ensure areas affected by the flood don`t suffer the same fate again...?
...and the most important thing he can think of to comment on is to try and change the name of UL.
Imagine if the college were actually dumb enough to take him up on it (which I am presuming/hoping they won`t be ) . How much would they spend on rebranding the place. For a place the size of UL, it would run into millions. What would they gain from it...ZERO. What would we in Clare actually gain from it... ZERO.
If a motion was actually passed on this, I presume that it went to a meeting and a discussion was held on it, and it was passed. Anyone who was at that meeting and didn`t stand up and scream, "THIS IS A WASTE OF TIME" should just resign straight away.
To think, that some people think we should give more power to local government...? Give more power to these fools...??? You want to be out of your freggin mind...!!!!

Why should there be a pole held? Crowe didn`t feel the need to hold a pole with the UL alumni & benefactors about having the name changed. Why should anyone else`s opinion matter to a headline grabber?

Interesting that 2 articles above the councilors are vehemently opposed to any boundary extension yada yada but have no problem taking ownership of the UL name. i.e. let us have some of the good stuff but keep ye`re problems to yerselves.
