Can any shed any light on why he is never called up to the squad?
Has he retired from internationals?

I imagine they feel it`s not worth having a guy in the squad just to take throw-ins.

ah come on lads, sher when we have quality players like leon best (all he`s missing is the neck tattoo ) and paul mcshane in our ranks, who needs an experienced player with probably the best throw in in europe in the side. anytime he is playing and stoke win a throw in its like them winning a free kick in a dangerous position.

His mistake was lending his guitar to Andy Reid.

I believe Burnley moved the advertising boards closer to the pitch to try stop him getting a proper run up for them.

With Doyle up front he would surely win a good few headers and flick it on.....
You always hear about reid/ireland crap but not a mention why delap is not in the squad, thats what I find strange

He should definately be in the squad and the team in my opinion. Is better than lawrence who starts regularly. If trap isnt going to pick flair players, surely he should have one the best dead ball specialists in the premiership on the field to do damage at set pieces. It much easier win a throw than a free. Richard Dunne would be scoring for fun with Delap in the side

Its a strange one, he has been ignored by a few managers now. Only played a few times for Ireland, but surely he is worth a place at least on the bench ahead of the likes of Liam Miller who is always there. He is 33 now, so probably won`t get a look in in the future either.

Trap has said that he wont pick him just for throw ins. Which is a bit short-sighted I think...
Look at this video...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=742KZspdgr0&feature=related
Now think of the damage he could do to the likes of Macedonia and Russia away with that kind of a throw in. Because dont tell me that Trap will be playing open expansive football in those kind of games....so he can afford a plodder in the team getting his boot in and just playing the simple pass. And then the throw ins - sure they wouldnt be able to cope. Teams spend days organising their defences before they play Stoke in an effort to combat Delaps weapon. At International level, they only get a few days training together before games...can you imagine sticking on the likes of Folan, Cillian Sheridan and Doyler in the box waiting for a Delap throw in....would be worth many valuable goals either directly or indirectly.

I agree. I`d love to see him against Armenia, Macedonia, Slovakia and Russia. He`s a decent player too, certainly capable of doing the same job Whelan or Andrews does.

He could cover at right back too, played there about 10 years ago for Southampton and did a decent job

He would have been a better option than McShane at right back for the last campaign. But at something like 33 it`s probably too late to bring him in now.

ah lads, Id wonder if some of ye actually watch soccer at all. Rory Delap is an absolutely useless footballer. How he gets in the Stoke team ahead of Lawrence on the right wing is a serious mystery. He is probably the slowest player in the EPL and apart from the throw ins offers absolutely nothing. Watch a Stoke game for 90 mins (tough going admittedly ) and you will come to the same conclusion. Trapp has got maost decisions right and not including Delap on the basis of a throw in is well up there. Stoke is the only club in the EPL that he would get his game as the manager Tony Pulis is a dinosaur. Bar Glenn Whelan every other player is a 6ft 2 plus giant. They play with four centre halves and even Whelan their only midfielder with a semblance of class is drop ped occassionally for a giant like Diao or Whitehead. Set piece, scrap, set piece - that is their way.
The effect of the throw ins has been seriously overplayed too. The referees should cut down on the amount of time wasted with them.
Keith Fahey now, there is a very tidy player but we have a lot of good options out wide in fairness. Not the hardest working player but there was rumours of him having a huge fall out with Brady and Don Givens when he was a youth at Arsenal so maybe that is counting against him. Jamie O`Hara will be a good addition to the squad too.

It can`t happen anymore either, as FIFA have rules regarding the placement of hoardings which Burnley broke the other night.
I think its a bit of a joke and a poor reflection on premier league defences. When Stoke were in the championship, not many people refered to this throw in as any kind of serious `weapon`, yet they move up a division and its causing havoc.
As Beaugosse suggested a while back, why not position a player close to the touchline in line with the throw. So he has to either throw it over him, altering the trajectory and therefore reducing its effeciveness, or throw it past him, taking it away from the area of immediate danger from a flick on?
Mind you, if defenders were a bit less precious and actually made it their business to get to the ball first thereby preventing the flick on, it wouldnt be such an issue in the first place.
If Delap didnt have a good throw in, this thread would not exist.

Not true. I watched Stoke play Arsenal in the FA Cup and was impressed with the amount of football they played.
