Nine nominees put forward for Limerick hurling manager

`Limerick Leader`
Former Limerick star Gary Kirby is one of three Patrickswell men to nominated for the position of county manager
By Jerome O`Connell
JUSTIN McCarthy is one of nine people nominated to manage the Limerick senior hurlers in 2011.
McCarthy didn`t make his intentions known when his two year term in charge of Limerick ended two weeks ago with the All-Ireland qualifier defeat to Offaly, but he is now the standout name on the list of nine possible managers for the new season.
The names of all those nominated by the clubs of Limerick have been forwarded to the three-man Independent Appointments Committee.
However, that committee of Damien Quigley, Paudie Fitzmaurice and Jim Woulfe have the power to source their own manager, outside of those nominated by the clubs.
The trio are now to undertake interviews and make a recommendation to the officers of Limerick County Board.
Their is no time limit to their process, but the next meeting of the County Board is scheduled for August 10.
Last Friday was the deadline for the clubs to nominate their preference for the inter-county job and in all 13 different clubs submitted nominations - some candidates received the backing of more than one club.
The clubs were asked to check the intentions of their nominees in advance, but it is not known if all clubs corresponded with their nominees in advance of submitting their names to County Secretary, Mike O`Riordan.
Surprisingly, nominated against Justin McCarthy is John Tuohy, who was a select or alongside McCarthy this season.
Tuohy is one of three Patrickswell men to be nominated - also in the list of nine are Gary Kirby and Ciaran Carey.
It appears that it is Gary Kirby that received the backing of the club.
Kirby was select or/coach in 2007 and 2008 when Richie Bennis was Limerick manager, while Carey is a former manager of the county under-21 and senior camogie sides.
The current Limerick under-21 manager, Leo O`Connor also received a nomination, while another in the list of nominees is Val Murnane, who won All-Ireland minor and under-21 titles as a player with Limerick in the mid-1980s.
Former Limerick hurling captain TJ Ryan is another on the list. The Garryspillane man only retired from playing with Limerick in 2006 after 12 years with the county senior team. He played in both All-Ireland finals of the mid-90s.
The two remaining nominees could be seen as surprises. The first is former Limerick manager Dave Keane.
Keane was at the helm of the Limerick under-21 sides that won three memorable All-Ireland titles at the start of the last decade.
He was elevated to the role of Limerick senior manager in 2003, but his ill-feted reign lasted just one season.
Perhaps the most interesting of the nine nominee is John Allen - he managed his native Cork for two years, leading them to the 2005 All-Ireland title.

Looks like a no brainer for the Limerick county board.
Justin McCarthy has a proven track record and huge experience in managing teams down through the years and is exactly what Limerick need right now, he would bring stability to the Limerick set up.

I wonder did John Allen agree to being nominated? Surely none of the clubs were stupid enough to nominate without talking to the nominee first.
The 3 man committee have to get this right. So much is at stake.

Gary Kirby will get it I think. Justin is a fantastic trainer/manager look what he did with Waterford and they kicked him out on his hole.

Billy,we must be careful here and remember that it`s the management that choose the panel, don`t fall into the trap of the old ways of turmoil.
Anyway, there are three stand out names on that list for me,ie Justin McCarthy,John Allen and Dave Keane,I don`t believe the other names on the list have the necessary credentials,as of now,for the position. It will be interesting if the 3men come up with some other names outside that list.Remember John Bond taking over from Babs and taking Offaly to glory and most peole had never heard of him.

With all respect to Gary,he couldn`t do it with Patrickswell, what chance has he with Limerick.
TJ and a few in there that are a joke, what we need now is a leader and i dont think their is one in the county,Justin isn`t the man either, maybe Allen i dont know, but i think we will let it to the three and give them the time they deserve, they are no fools.

Looks like a no brainer for the Limerick county board.
Justin McCarthy has a proven successful track record and huge experience in managing teams down through the years, has recently won 3 Munsters and a National League with Waterford, as well as past success with Clare, Cork, Cashel among others.
He is exactly what Limerick need right now, he would bring stability to the Limerick set up and clear out some of the deadwood from the past few years and stand up to the drinking culture.
He might even introduce some of those U21 lads who so recently put All-Ireland champions Clare to the pin of their collar.
If Justin wasn`t available, maybe they could consider Dinny Cahill or somebody like that who has inter-county experience, and can a weaker county to believe in themselves?

Bond? James Bond? Someone has shaken and stirred your brain Absent, was he not Michael Bond?
I would love to see Gary in charge but whatever happens he has to be the man in charge of coaching for the next set-up. From those others named there are only a couple of stand out candidates in the mix. Some others will be ready in a few years but not now.

The essential thing to be taken from this post is you know nothing.
McCarthy, Allen and Keane are the stand out names for you?
For gods sake. You have no knowledge. Stop spoofing.

with all due respect, John allen is hardly the man for the job, his success with cork was due to his continuing o gradys work and his close relationship with the players. he doesn`t have the steel that lk need. dave keane is a beaten docket at this stage, kirby should get a go because he wants it and will have the respect of the players. it remains to see how good an inter county manager he would be but good luck to him.

What about giving the seniors to Gary
The 21`s the Dave Keane
And the Minors to carey
Give them at least three years and let them work together in bring the players on up the levels

+1. Sounds like a winner. No matter what they must be give the chance to work a full 3 yr term without interference.
