Waterford`s Dan Shanahan says he intends to retire from inter-county hurling at the end of this season.

"It will be something else next year. It probably was my last Munster final," he said in reflection of his winning goal against Cork in the provincial decider replay.

"It`s great to finish off like that. It gets harder and harder to come back - it`s a young man`s game."

But Shanahan, who has been largely restricted to a substitute`s role this year, believes he can still do a job for 70 minutes.

"I think there is 70 minutes in me, depending on what position he`d  (manager Davy Fitzgerald )  play me now. I do think I have done a lot of training this year, on and off the field. But he`s the manager. he makes the decisions. Whether I like it or not, I will respect his decision no matter what. I might not always agree with it but he`s the manager."

You obviously know nothing about hurling Louie, he`s the best impact sub in the game at the moment and he has won 2 massive games for Waterford over the last couple of seasons against Galway last year and this years Munster Final

Why is he making a big deal about retiring, sure he can`t get his place on the team anyway!

In fairness the Cork hurlers always listen to their manager and his assistant Denis

Great post, jimmymahon - I like it, though it was more applicable when Allen was in charge.

I was at the Galway - Waterford match last year, the impact he had was astounding to say the least. Just his presence changed the very atmosphere within the ground and all.

He still has a lot to offer.

Big Dan is fantastic for waterford. For 3 years he was almost unstoppable. Unusual to have a fella at that level to be such a nice chap off the pitch aswell..

His Impact is limited these days, however sign of a class act the last day to come up with the vital score. Listen to the roar of the waterford crowd when they hear he is coming on. I still wouldnt start him as his mobility is questionable, but ive nothing for admiration for the man who turn himself practically from a joke figure amongst fans to a 3 time all star. He owes waterford hurling nothing.

Dan is a great poacher for Goals and was a very good player to win ball in the Air. He had some season in 2007.

Big Dan, the Joseph Heller of the hurling world - he hasn`t done anything as good as 2007 but then again, who has?

Big decision made by Dan hard to know if he has made the right one ,he has been put in a Catch 22 situation by Davy Fitz

All that does is show up Ritchie Bennis as the loser he really is.

I had alot of time for him and the great job he did with Limerick but that comment really put me off him and i know it was heat off the moment stuff but still i though it really showed him up badly.
