If I`m correct the line ball must now be taken from off the field.

Noel mcGrath took one the other night from off the field, mis struck it and it never came on to the field.

How then was it a line ball for Clare????

This is a stupid bloody rule.

If a line ball is taken from outside the field of play and a referee blows to restart play. What happens if the ball never reenters the field of play?

What happen "down the country" when a referee is lucky enough to have a pitch with flags let alone clear lines on it?

this rule came in becasue some linesmen were letting players take sideline from 2 or 3 meters in onto the pitch.

Anyway, hurling has no rule that states a lineball has to be taken from off the field of play, I thought that was only for the big ball game.

It needs to be outside or on the line. It`s an unusual one alright I am guessing that the same rules applies as if the ball was inside the line, not sure on it though

To be honest the linesman did not know what he was doing at the Clare v Tipp match the other night. At one stage he had his flag up for a Clare Line Ball but the ref did not see it and the linesman took the flag down again to let play go on!!!!!

I think all these new rules are ridiculous and some teams are being punished while others get away with it unnoticed. The GAA should drop  these ridiculous rules and revert to the old way of stealing a yard or two with the crowd roaring at the player to bring it back.....it create s the atmosphere. Nicky Brennan and now Christy Cooney seem to want to impose alot of technical fouls as in the rugby. Next the GAA will be implementing rules for the spectators having to wear three piece suits, no shouting and no taking the p1ss out of the opposition sitting next to you.
Please God the next GAA President will have some common sense.

John Dillon is correct where he says that this side line rule is only for Football. Sidelines in hurling should be taken on the line  (or in most cases just inside the line - pitch side )  and if it ends up over the line, the flag goes up again....

However, you still see alot of hurlers at all levels taking the line ball from outside the pitch markings  (following football rules ) .

Well said Torcaill, I`m sick telling hurlers not to be trying to play football on the hurling pitch, `tis like standing 13m from a free, that`s football, in hurling it`s 20m............

BTW Cannings sideline cut at the weekend was taken from on the pitch, so not all refs have it wrong.

This rule about where sideline cuts/kicks should be taken from is the biggest joke that the Rules Committee have brought in when the likes of Gooch  (and others )  are allowed to steal 6 or 7 steps, and sometimes more, until they are in front of the posts before taking a free. It makes a complete mockery of the rules
