Have not been following the European Athletics championships , but there was an Irish times journalist just on the last word (today FM )  saying that he expects Gillick to get either a Gold or a Silver tonight in the 400m final , and will be very dissapointed if he does not come back with a gold or silver.

Would he be rated that highly in Europe?

Course he would, he has the second fastest time in the championships, won both of his heats. A serious competitor, ran under 45 seconds in his semi final, and if he manages to consistently keep producing those times, he will become well respected on a global stage soon enough

How often do these predictions actually come true. Too often we hear about the magnificent form of Irish Athletes going into Major Championships only for them to flop on the main stage.

Not trying to knock Irish Athletes here, I realise they make huge sacrifices for little reward sometimes, but most of them just seem incapable of producing their best form when it really matters.

Best of luck to Gillick tonight.

Finished 5th. A poor run from him in fairness. He would have been expecting a medal at the very least.

How much money do we put in to high performance Athletics in this country, we do not seem to be getting a great return in the medal count.

I know we are a very small country in relative terms to a lot of our competitors , but is one medal too much to ask for at a European event.

Disappointing run alright. Fully expected him to be in first two. Ironic that he did beat his main rival. Looks like the occasion got to him alright. Looked like he was a bit tensed up.
Hopefully Derval does the business today.
On a side note, I think RTE are making a mess of the coverage. They have the raw ingredients in place. Good panel, the action, Joanne Cantwell, etc. Why not let Tony O`Donoghue do all the commentary. At least he knows his stuff. Leave George at the soccer.
Worst of all is Peter Collins as anchor. He is on the tv years now and still looks like a rabbit staring at the headlights, panicking as he comes up with inane questions, before cutting off the guests suddenly to cut over to a race that he has forgotten to mention due to a five minutes of asking basically the same question ten times about why an Irish athlete didn`t perform.

From listening to his post race interview ,and then Sonia and Eamon`s discussion back in the studio. With his class and ability he would have expected a bronze at least.

Oh right. I would have thought that he has lots of previous experience of these types of occasions. Just goes to show you never know what goes on inside someone else`s head.

Certainly looks like that , when you see some of the performances we put in at these tournaments.

Makes you appreciate the Boxers displays all the more.

Waste of time putting money into sports where we have no chance of success, they should pump all the money into boxing if they want Olympic medals
