Doing a project about internet forums and participation. Will be asking the same range of questions about each county over a month or so.
This time it`s Galway I want answers about.
Could people tell me the best hurling
Keeper,
Defender,
Midfielder
Forward
that played for Galway.
Will take all replies up to midnight tomorrow night.
thanks.

Both of the Canning brothers marginally miss out, all going well, Joe Canning will surpass Joe Cooney in time.

Will you ever fcuk off Redlead and get off Joe Cannings case. Should you not be too busy kissing Eoin Kellys ass ? You didnt see Galway lads going onto the same thread about Waterford and running down any of their players

is it possible for any new poster here to refrain from cursing and being abusive in their posts?
What has Eoin Kelly got to do with anything and where am I running down a player? The thread is about who is a counties best ever player in certain positions. I merely pointed out that it would be a strange choice to include a 22 year old who has not exactly been on fire over the last couple of years. I would expect Canning to be on the list in ten years time but he still has plenty to do to get there. Surely Joe Cooney and Eugene Cloonan are ahead of him at the moment.

The number of posts is no reflection of how long I,m on this Forum. Its just that (unlike you ) I dont feel the need to post on every topic. Id say half your total of posts are about JC. Your obsession with him is getting worse. Eoin will get jealous if you dont stop, Most Waterford people would give anything to have JC line out for the Deise methinks.

haha you`re hilarious ....my "obsession with Joe Canning"? You could probably count on one hand the amount of times I`ve commented on him ... And you`re right, Waterford would love to have Joe Canning, the lad is a tremendous talent ..... anyway there`s not much point in argueing with fellows such as yourself. Goodnight.

Joe Canning has a lot to do if he wants to surpass Cooney. He`ll have to win the big one. Time is on his side but he`d want to improve on the last two years.
I`ve disagreed with Redlead a lot on this board but I have to agree with him on this point. Joe Canning should not be on the best ever Galway hurlers.

First off, I never saw the boys pre 1970 play (I based on conversation with the older generation ) . Therefore I can`t compare the two. Even if I did see them play, I still don`t think you can comapre the two - style, fitness etc. of the modern game is totally different from that 40 years ago
It`s the same with all the other counties. The Cork boys all select Ring - how many of them have seen him play? - there cannot be more than 5 hrs of footage in total of him available. You can`t base a select ion on that.

I think you should only select from whom you`ve seen

The problem with these lists is they are biased towards more recent vintage hurlers, reflecting the younger age profile of most AFR members. You would get very different answers interviewing an older population, also reflecting how difficult it is to compare hurlers from different generations.
As for Galway`s best, hard to pick anyone that was not on the team of the millenium select ed in 2000. Did not see Sean Duggan or Joe Salmon hurl but heard enough about them (Salmon in particular ) to have no basis for select ing anyone above them.
Sean Duggan
Iggy Clarke
Joe Salmon
Joe Cooney
In terms of players I saw play, would replace Duggan by Michael Conneely and Salmon by Steve Mahon

Goals : Sean Duggan
Defender: Iggy Clarke
Midfield: Michael Coleman
Forward: Joe Cooney
Have picked players I have seen play except at goalkeeper, The reason for the exception is cos although Galway have had some very good keepers over the last 30 plus years I wouldnt consider any of them to be outstandingly brilliant and I grew up hearing about the legend of Seanie Duggan. A toss up between Iggy and Ollie for defender , and if I had the ability to time travel I`d probably have Joe Salmon in there too

I know people are entitled to their oponion but how is Ollie Canning not everyone`s best defender? Just because he didn`t win an All-Ireland doesn`t mean he isn`t the best. Iggy and the half back line of the late 80`s were class but they had back-up. Canning never had a decent full back or centre back with him.
Also anyone who picked John Commins prob don`t remember the 90 final. One under his legs, turns his arse to a few others.

I`m not old enough to comment about pre 1980`s but the best Galway hurler I have seen to date is Joe Cooney. I can honestly say I haven`t seen any one better for both club and county..
Goalie Big Mike Conneely
Defender Keady had a touch of class.
Midfielder Coleman.. Tough as nails.
Forward .. The one and only Joe Cooney.
Cooney could also slot in to midfield as he did for Sarsfields but as he was a forward for Galway this is where he is select ed!

Keeper - Richie Burke (very underrated )
Defender - Ollie Canning (honourable mentions to Silke, Iggy, Sylvie, Finnerty, Keady )
Midfielder - Mike Coleman (best I`ve seen in my time, half a team on his own. Heartening to see many agree with me. If only we had him now!! :- ( )
Forward - Joe Cooney (But the current JC is a lot nearer than people think. I`ve seen more of him than most and he is already really and truly that good. Superb underage record and his club form alone warrants his inclusion here. )
