These bad boys are winging their way `round again.

Its crucial that we get off to a good start. Armenia are no great shakes and if we have realistic intentions of qualifying then we must go looking for the win. McShame and Andrews are out and I would imagine Green will slot into the midfield beside Whelan making it a creative hotspot as usual.

A draw in Yerevan would not be a disaster as points are likely to be drop ped like hot snots in this group. Andorra apparently scored one of their 18 international goals against us but you`d have to fancy us to get six points agin them over the two games.

Six points from the opening two games would be a good haul to take to Moscow in October. Slovakia at home are the following game and three points at least will have to be taken from those two games.

The fixture list for next year is odd. There is one game in March and one in June and a flurry of games from September onwards. The last two matches we have are very winnable so if we`re in good fettle going into those then we`ll qualify.

Getting nervous fergus already.

6 points against Armenia and Andorra is a must-if we don`t win this match on Friday then forget about it.

Oh fact! no fewer than 6 pts is acceptable  from the opening two games!

We can be sure Slovakia and Russia will pick up their points there. I just hope they open the qualifying campaign by playing with even 70% of the fight that they did over in Paris.

Come on the boys in green - and Ireland aswel : )

Too early to say that although it would put us up against it.

Experience shows that points will be drop ped by all teams during the group. Armenia V Russia, for example, is a local derby and I wouldn`t be surprised if the Russians didn`t beat them in Yerevan.

Duff out of the Armenia match with injury picked up at weekend.
Makes getting the 3 pts there a lot tougher.

...........Its actually the Russians in Dublin on Friday the 8th of October, Slovakia away in Zilina the following Tuesday.Duff is a huge loss, his assists to Keane in Paris and Cyprus were crucial.

I stand corrected  (said the man in the orthopaedic shoes.... )

A draw on Friday would not be the end of the world. A loss would be though. I hope Kevin Doyle has his running boots on because I can`t see the ball bothering the grass that much.

Trapattoni`s squad select   ion makes things tougher. He seems to love picking the very limited players ie. Sheridan, Green, Treacy, McShane, Kilbane      (was a good servant but now a liability   )   , Long, Joe Murphy etc. We even have a decent 11 who Trap continues to overlook.

Paddy Kenny    (QPR   )
Seamus Coleman    (Everton   )
Marc Wilson    (Portsmouth/Stoke   )
Shane Duffy    (Everton   )
Stephen Ward    (Wolves   )
Rory Delap    (Stoke   )
James McCarthy    (Wigan   )
Dave Meyler    (Sunderland   )       (injured   )
Andy Reid    (Sunderland   )
Anthony Stokes    (Celtic   )
Jon Walters    (Stoke   )

we need to look to win the group.i think if trap leaves the team off the leash a bit more we could turn those draws in the last campaign into wins.russia are not as strong as they were under hiddink, and with slovakia o.k they had a decent world cup,but we should be looking to take 4 points off them.

Won`t be easy, I`d take 1-0 right now. Given and Keane are both lacking competitive action  (I know the season is still young but it has to be a worry that they aren`t in first team mode as of yet ) . Duff is a massive loss, his creativity is a vital link between our midfield and front line.

I was looking at Armenia`s record today, they have taken some scalps in the last few years. They beat Belgium at home in the last World Cup qualifiers and also lost to Spain and France by just one goal.

This group has some tricky ties, we may end up going via the qualifier route again - perhaps a trip to Paris in November 2011 beckons?

Look lads the stark reality of it is that at the very least 4 points are needed from these games and we should be aiming for 6points.
Also we should try and knock a few past Andorra to boost our goal difference as this group could easily finish level on points and goal difference could come into the equation.
We could and really should go for the juggular in games and try and qualify automatically by topping the group.

Here`s hoping.

I looked up armenias record, and it will be a tricky tie for ireland.
They beat belgium 2-1 last year. They have a list of other notable  draws wins against opponents to equal Ireland.

Just look up armenia football in wiki.

Nice of them to play it on friday to let the lads home in time for the big hurling game on sunday!

The international calendar is now changed - matches will be played on Fridays and Tuesdays so that players have more time to recuperate before returning to club action.

Ridiculous that he continues to persist with Kilbane and Mc Shane as our full backs especially when you consider that they`re the 2 positions on the field where we have some young talent coming through. Coleman, Wilson. Foley and Ward should all be in the reckoning, not just for a place in the squad, but a place in the team.

Coleman was outstanding for while on loan at Blackpool last year and is on the verge of breaking into Evertons 1st team, he`s a huge talent. Wilson, Foley and Ward are all experienced Premiership players at this stage and would offer more than Kilbane and Mc Shane.

The good news is that McShane is out injured!!

Reckon team should be

Given
Kelly
St Ledger
Dunne
O`Shea

McGeady
Whelan
Green
Lawrence

Keane
Doyle

But i`d be afraid he will go with Kilbane at LB, even though Kelly has played there so far for Fulham and is a much better defender. Kilbane is a winger, was never a LB.

Apart from that with injuries we have the rest of the side picks itself.
Hope we can sneak a win there, a draw is likely..but really have to be getting wins in these games if we are top top group.

Lads Belgium are fairly sh1t for the last ten years so i wouldn`t read too much into that result. If we can`t beat Armenia home and away we are in trouble in the group in all honesty

Have a look at the world rankings, they are not always spot on maybe but here`s a few countries ahead of Armenia in the list:
Libya,El Salvador,Oman, Malawi, Benin.
