Can any1 help me?
Thinking about travelling the States next year, and might hire out a car. I don`t have a credit card. Does the principal driver need to have the card registered to them, or can another party use theirs to hire the car?
also, is there such thing as a credit debit card, that i can load money onto, to use abroad. i`m a student and won`t get a credit card from the bank. but want something i can load money onto and use it when i need it?
Any help appreciated.

Why could you not get a student credit card? Small limit but you could front load it with cash as you say

Yes there is. Visa do a debit card and so do Mastercard. Ask your bank for details, they should be able to square you off. Just remember, though, that you`ll need to load it up pretty well to rent a car. They tend to "freeze" a certain amount on the card (either your funds or the credit allowance ) as a deposit. So if you hand over your credit card first, find out how much they are freezing so you can work out how much you have left to spend.

If you have the "Maestro" logo on your bank / laser card it should work fine for you in the U.S.

Open yourself a PTSB current account before you leave. They have the VISA Debit card anyway, its the same principal as the laser in that it comes from your current account (not sure what other Banks have them ) . I had one of them before, great yoke, you can use them all over the world in the same fashion as a credit card. They also work on many websites that that wouldnt take laser but look for visa. Handy.

Tks for the info. All i have is a laser with maestro and stupid 3V thingy that doesn`t work anyway.

Is it u dont want one or the bank wont give you one? Most hire car companies want you to present them with a credit card or the debit card in the office, belonging to you if u are going to be driving..
