Topic: Global warming is `bulls**t` says Ryanair boss O`Leary

Charging for toilets, weighing passengers and flying with a lone pilot: Ryanair`s combative boss Michael O`Leary is renowned for backing unusual ideas, but some passengers may feel that even he has overstepped the mark with his latest comments – denying the existence of global warming.
In an interview with The Independent littered with expletives, the chief exc utive of Europe`s largest airline branded the scientific consensus that man-made pollution is heating up the planet with potentially grave consequences for the future of humanity as "horse\\".
He agreed the climate was changing but denied it was caused by man-made emissions of carbon dioxide, such as those from his planes. "Nobody can argue that there isn`t climate change. The climate`s been changing since time immemorial," he said.
"Do I believe there is global warming? No, I believe it`s all a load of bull\\. But it`s amazing the way the whole ____ing eco-warriors and the media have changed. It used to be global warming, but now, when global temperatures haven`t risen in the past 12 years, they say `climate change`."
"Well, hang on, we`ve had an ice age. We`ve also had a couple of very hot spells during the Middle Ages, so nobody can deny climate change. But there`s absolutely no link between man-made carbon, which contributes less than 2pc of total carbon emissions [and climate change]."
He suggested scientists had invented and perpetuated the theory in order to gain research grants. "Scientists argue there is global warming because they wouldn`t get half of the funding they get now if it turns out to be completely bogus," he said.
"The scientific community has nearly always been wrong in history anyway. In the Middle Ages, they were going to excommunicate Galileo because the entire scientific community said the Earth was flat... I mean, it is absolutely bizarre that the people who can`t tell us what the ____ing weather is next Tuesday can predict with absolute precision what the ____ing global temperatures will be in 100 years` time. It`s horse\\."
He mocked global warming campaigners, describing the United Nations as "one of the world`s most useless organisations", its Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change  (IPCC )  as "utter tosh", and US politician Al Gore as someone who "couldn`t even get ____ing re-elected" after a boom.
Of air passenger duty in Britain, which will rise by between £1 and £30 in November, Mr O`Leary said: "When they introduced it the Treasury said: `We will ring-fence this money and use it for global climate change initiatives`.
We`ve written to them once every six months – they never answer the letter – saying: `What do you use the money for?` It`s a straight-forward tax scam... My average fare is £34. I pay passenger tax of £10: I pay 33pc of my revenues in these aviation taxes.
"Aviation gets a crap deal. This is the great historical justification among environmentalists for taxing air travel: `They don`t have tax on fuel`. The only reason we don`t pay tax on fuel is that governments can`t tax it because you`ll upload fuel somewhere else if they tax it."
To date, the US, UK, Germany, Japan, India, and China have all agreed on the existence of global warming, but have failed to agree binding emission targets to limit it. More than 2,500 scientists contributed to the IPCC`s fourth assessment report in 2007, which warned that freak weather events such as flooding and drought will intensify, threatening agriculture and the livelihoods of millions.
Greenpeace issued a light-hearted response to Mr O`Leary`s comments. "Personally, I wouldn`t trust `O`Really` to tell me the price of a seat on his own airline, but to be fair his position does have the support of such intellectual heavyweights as Nick Griffin, Sarah Palin and George W Bush," said Joss Garman, a Greenpeace spokesman.

O`Leary is a spoofer and grandstander.

Doesn`t make him wrong on this though.

Cows farting produce more Co2 emissions than human industry, including avaition.

Actually they don`t. But cows are part of the human industrial system anyway, so the "stat" is irrelevant. It isn`t wild buffalo they are talking about there, it`s intensively reared cattle whose numbers would be precisely zero without human intervention.

Well I think on this topic he`s only reflecting what an awful lot of people believe and not just business people. Branding people luddites and flat-earthists and lumping them with holocaust denier`s etc etc actually doesn`t make Global warming a reality. The scientific community advising the UN in this area have been found wanting in terms of crediability and this has given vested interests a platform. I must say on this issue I am a sceptic but open to persuasion.

Ahh in fairness it`s correctly called "Global Climate Destabilization", due to the fact the climate will differ in its severities from flash floods and severe droughts and not just the whole place getting warmer.

You see, this is a load of nonsence on two grounds.

1. Cows don`t release extra CO2 in comparison to other animals. It`s methane gas which they release which is worse.

2. The methane and Co2 they realise would be realised without them anyways. The grass they eat which removed Co2 from the air, would eventually wither, die and the rotting process by bacteria would release these gases instead of the cows.

It hasn`t been referred to as `global warming` since the 1960s within the relevant scientific disciplines. O`Leary talking rubbish to support his own interests is hardly a shock anyway,

Good to see that that Greenpeace spokesmen doing his best to revive anti-Irish Paddywhackery with his "O`Really" jibe that wouldn`t be out of place in a Bernard Manning routine.

He`s not even making an effort anymore - most of the sceptic arguments he offers are straight out of the "urrrr....that sounds right" school.

Most galling, perhaps, is the Galileo one. Was he not the one who was using the best scientific practice of the time to improve peoples understanding of the world?

Come to think of it the people trying to supress Galileo were the ones with a large financial stake in maintaing the status quo as well.

How in Christ could it be called Global Warming in the 1960`s.

The 1960`s the world was cooling and people were expecting the next ice age.

I don`t know what `people` you`re talking about. Global climate change first came to the attention of geographers and meteorologists in the late 60s and by the last 70s a pattern had been identified but by then the phrase `global warming` was recognised as an inadequate description of the phenomenon.

Sure what difference does t make anyway. If people are going to take Michael O`Leary`s word, a man with obvious and blatant interests at stake, over 99.99 percent of the global scientific community, millions of pieces of accumulated evidence, and the fact that oil companies themselves have acknowledged that the problem s very real - then forget about them. They`ll believe it when fianna fail tell them to.
