Championships Heating Up
by
Willie O'Connor
Austin Stacks and West Kerry won the two remaining quarterfinal places in the AIB County Senior Football Championship after their respective victories over Kerins O’Rahillys and Kilcummin in last Friday evening’s Round 3 replays. They will play each in the quarterfinal. The other quarterfinal games will see An Ghaeltacht play Dr. Crokes, East Kerry play South Kerry and Laune Rangers play Kilcummin.
The round 3 replay at Austin Stack Park between Austin Stacks and Kerins O’Rahillys was a thriller from start to finish and played with all the passion and intensity of a local derby game. The two goals scored by Austin Stacks were the defining scores of the game coming as they did at crucial stages. The game was very much there for the taking right up to the final whistle but it was a jubilant Stacks team and supporters who celebrated their narrow victory.
At Castlegregory, West Kerry built up a big lead by the end of the first half and that provided a platform for the expected Kilcummin rally in the second half. Kilcummin tired hard to the finish as West Kerry held out for victory.

DUBLIN V TYRONE
Congratulations to referee, Aidan Mangan, who has come in for much praise for his handling of the All-Ireland quarterfinal between Dublin and Tyrone last Saturday. The replay will be played on Saturday August 27th the day before the All-Ireland Semi-final between Kerry and Cork. Those who are planning a weekend in Dublin for the Kerry/Cork semi-final will have another treat if the replay comes anyway close the last Saturday’s thrilling encounter.
COUNTY MINOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
East Kerry and South Kerry join Dr. Crokes and St. Brendan’s in the semi-finals of the Keane’s Super Valu County Minor Football Championship. The semi-final pairings have not been drawn yet and the games are likely to be played during the first week of September.
In their quarterfinal played last week St. Brendan’s defeated West Kerry. The two remaining quarterfinals were played last weekend. South Kerry defeated Shannon Rangers at Tarbert on Saturday evening and the holders, East Kerry defeated Laune Rangers at Gneeveguilla on Sunday evening.
COUNTY MINOR CLUB FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
An Ghaeltacht defeated Austin Stacks last Sunday evening at Páirc An Ághasaigh, Dingle in the final of the Keane’s Super Valu County Minor Club Football Championship. The game was very closely contested right up to the closing minutes when two points for An Ghaeltacht as full time approached gave them the insurance scores for a four point winning margin.
The 13 a side final between Keel and St. Michael’s/Foilmore will be played on this Friday August 19th at 7.00 p.m. at Glenbeigh.
COUNTY UNDER 21 FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
South Kerry and East Kerry are through to the final of the County Under 21 Football Championship. East Kerry booked their place after a very closely fought second half. East Kerry had a comfortable lead going into the second half but Shannon Rangers rallied in the second half and reduced their arrears. East Kerry finished more strongly as the game entered the closing minutes. South Kerry won after extra time against a gallant Dingle team the previous week. The date of the final has not been arranged.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
On Friday last at Castleisland at Castleisland, Finuge narrowly defeated Ballymacelligott in the Semi-final of the Castleisland Co-Op Mart County Intermediate Football Championship. The quarterfinal game scheduled for Friday last between St. Mary’s and Spa was postponed. Legion await the winners of this quarterfinal in the second semi-final.
In the quarterfinal of the Novice Football Championship last Sunday Tuosist had a two point winning margin over Churchill at Lauragh.
INTERMEDIATE HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL
In the Intermediate County Hurling Championship Final played last Friday evening at Lewis Road, Kenmare and Kilgarvan finished level after a thrilling game of hurling played by two very committed and spirited teams. The replay date has not been arranged.
COUNTY LEAGUE
Round 10 in Divisions 1 to 4 and Round 14 in Division 5 of the Credit Union County Senior Football League will be played this weekend with games on Saturday evening starting at 7.30 p.m. and on Sunday most of the games are at 2.30 p.m.
The results of the Round 9 games in Divisions 1 to 4 made only a minimum of changes to the league table positions. At the top and bottom ends in each of the divisions there was little change in the order of the leading teams and those in danger of relegation. So with only two rounds left to play there will be intense and closely fought games by those teams seeking to maintain their positions at the top of the tables and those making a final big effort to avoid relegation.
Austin Stacks are still one point behind the leaders, Dr. Crokes in Division 1 with both teams recording victories over two of the teams in danger of relegation, namely, Dingle and St. Mary’s respectively. The latter are still very much in danger after those defeats. An Ghaeltacht are not out of relegation danger although they still have a game in hand against Laune Rangers.
In Division 2 the table positions have changed at the top, Gneeveguilla are still in pole position despite losing to Ballymacelligott in Round 9. Dromid Pearses dropped down from second to fourth place after being narrowly beaten by Skellig Rangers. Since that round was played Rathmore have jumped into second place after winning their back game against Skellig Rangers. Spa have now gone into third place. Currow, St. Pat’s and Ballymacelligott are now level on five points each at the bottom of the table. This is a very competitive division and it is likely that the promotion and relegation issues will go
