The Women's Pitch
Captain leads Wexford into decider
By
Cóilín Duffy
Wexford captain Kate Kelly was in stirring form as Stellah Sinnott’s charges booked a place in the Gala All-Ireland Senior Camogie championship final for the first time since 1994 thanks to a 2-18 to 0-14 win over Galway in Nowlan Park on Saturday.
The midfielder firmly lead by example as she scored 1-11 with her goal coming midway through the opening half after a pass from earlier goalscorer Michelle Hearne to hold a 2-3 to 0-5 lead at this stage.
However this was one of the best periods of camogie witnessed in Nowlan Park for quite some time and Galway came back strongly in the closing seven minutes of the half, despite Kate Kelly ensuring a two goal gap with her fifth point of the hour.
Points from Ann Marie Hayes, Lourda Kavanagh, Veronica Curtin and Jessica Gill (2) ensured the gap was cut to two points at the interval with Wexford holding a 2-7 to 0-11 advantage.
This was as good as it got for the Westerners as in the second half Kelly was once again in tremendous form and was aided strongly in her efforts by Ursula Jacob, Rosemary Breen and second half substitute Bróna Furlong.
Kelly scored six points in the second half and although Wexford failed to score a goal in the second half, they weren’t without their chances with an Una Leacy strike coming off the upright four minutes from the end.
However Wexford had done enough at this stage and advanced by a ten points margin.
Wexford star ... Mary Leacy.

In the second semi-final Cork advanced to their seventh decider in eight years, thanks to a gutsy performance against a dogged Tipperary side.
Cork 2-11 Tipperary 0-9
The Rebels finished 2-11 to 0-9 winners in what was the fourth championship meeting of the sides this year.
Cork began this game strongly and points from Jennifer O’Leary, defender Rena Buckley and Angela Walsh ensured a 0-3 to 0-0 lead after eight minutes and although Claire Grogan took a point a minute later for Tipperary, her side were only to tag on two points before the interval – both from the stick of the Cashel player.
An Angela Walsh goal ensured that Cork held a 1-6 to 0-3 interval lead and although Tipperary staged a spirited second half performance thanks to the efforts of Eimear McDonnell and Grogan, an Una O’Donoghue goal for Cork with 12 and a half minutes remaining was the killer blow as it put nine points between the sides.
Tipperary didn’t give up and cut the gap to seven points thanks to scores from Eimear McDonnell and Claire Grogan but Cork held firm in the closing eight minutes and an Orla Cotter point sealed a win.
