SOME of the country’s leading GAA inter-county managers are on a collision course with RTÉ because they believe the station’s GAA Correspondent and commentator Brian Carthy’s duties on Sundays have been downgraded.
Tyrone boss Mickey Harte confirmed to the Irish Examiner last night that several managers have withdrawn co-operation and will continue to do so until they get a meeting with RTÉ bosses on the issue.
Harte was one of several high-profile team bosses who turned down RTÉ for post-match radio and tv interviews after Tyrone’s Ulster SFC win over Monaghan on Sunday, explaining yesterday the action was in response to RTÉ "ignoring" a letter sent a fortnight ago seeking a meeting to discuss Carthy’s position.
RTÉ’s flagship Sunday Game programme did not carry any interviews either with Laois manager Justin McNulty or Kildare manager Kieran McGeeney after their respective Leinster championship games in Croke Park on Sunday against Dublin and Kildare. It has since emerged the former Armagh teammates are among a group of eight signatories to the letter posted to RTÉ.
"We sent some correspondence to the effect that we are very much dismayed and alarmed at the absence of Brian Carthy from major commentary roles at the moment," Mickey Harte told the Irish Examiner.
RTÉ head of sport Ryle Nugent confirmed last night that neither Harte, McGeeney nor McNulty would agree to RTÉ interviews on Sunday, a situation Mr Nugent expressed surprise at.
"Brian was on commentary duties in Limerick on Saturday and will be again next weekend. He is still part of our commentary team," said Nugent.
"I am of the conviction that RTÉ will assign reporters and commentators as it sees fit."
Mr Nugent also pointed out that RTÉ have less live commentary matches than before and also had a significant stable of very capable commentator across tv and radio that it was obliged to use. He also confirmed that RTÉ director general Noel Curran had received the letter from Mickey Harte and has responded, even though the Tyrone manager may not have received the letter yet.
On Sunday, Carthy was on reporting duties in Páirc Uí Chaoimh for the Cork-Waterford Munster football semi-final while Croke Park hosted two of the main games of the day, the Leinster double-header involving Laois and Dublin and Kildare against Meath with radio commentary from Darragh Moloney and Adrian Eames.
Harte said yesterday there have been "two voices on Gaelic Games" on RTÉ Radio in modern times, Brian Carthy and Michéal Ó Muircheartaigh. After the retirement of Ó Muircheartaigh last year, Carthy "seemingly disappeared into the ether" in terms of the amount of coverage he was given "or more so the games he wasn’t given".
Said Harte: "We just didn’t think that was good practice because we do believe that for Gaelic Games over the years there has been a distinctive voice on radio,’’ he added.
"And radio is an unique medium. It’s a highly challenging skill to deliver that in a way that paints a picture for people and I think you need to be steeped in the GAA to do that."
Harte explained they had sent their letter to RTÉ on May 23, saying: "We stated those very things I have spoken to you about and asked them — respectfully I might add — if they would give us a chance to have a chat with them to elaborate on how we felt.
"Not only did we not get a response, we didn’t even get recognition that our letter arrived. The letter was sent by recorded delivery, guaranteed next day and had to be signed for to be received. So, I don’t think it has been lost in the post."
Outlining the background to their stance in support of Carthy, he said that "at a quick ask", eight inter-county managers agreed to the letter being sent to RTÉ. "It’s by no means exhaustive and there are loads of people we haven’t spoken to yet. It was just to let the authorities in RTÉ know that we were concerned and that we would like to speak to them to discuss it at greater depth.
If the managers would withdraw co-operation on an on-going basis, he responded: "We believe that will be the case."

I happen to agree with RTE on this. They have every right to deply who they like where they like as employers.
I think it is incorrect to put Carthy in the same bracket as Micheal O Muircheartaigh and Michael O`Hehir. I cant stand him on the radio because his descriptive powers are week....all he says repeatedly is the score
6 points to Offaly, 4 points to Laois repeateded ad nauseum.

It seems a bizarre thing for Bainisteorí to be getting excited about. Is there some underlying reason why we should be concerned that RTE are underworking one of their workaday reporters? It`s a long way from Free Nelson Mandela territory.

Maybe. but if people as steeped in GAA as Micky Harte and Kieran McGeeney believes that Carthy gives superior coverage then this must be considered. I doubt if they have any other ulterior motives. I suspect that Ryle Nugent wants to move RTE more towards Dublin 4 and away from the people from more far-flung areas. Suspect Carthy`s is being shafted to re-position the RTE brand or some other \\e in that line.

I agree with the managers...Brian Carthy is by far the best GAA commentator around and is a true Gael...RTE have us bored to Tears with Ger Canning and others over the years...they seem to be accomadating other sports commentators getting them doing GAA matchs which they have no real interest or passion for....better off with a GAA fanatic like Carthy...what next from RTE Orange George doing matchs?

Agree - this is bizzare. How could anyone not have huge time for Mickey Harte? An amazing man really, but I think he and his fellow managers are stepping over the line here. Surely this is an internal staff matter for RTE and Brian Carthy. And doesn`t it relate to last year when he took a case against his employers for being sidelined. Ryle Nugent may be D4 and all that but he can`t not know how important the GAA is. My own opinion of Carty doesn`t really matter - we`ll never replace Micheal and that`s always going to be our problem.

What a strange thing for the managers to get worried about...
Personally, I think he`s a shocking commentator, and RTE are entitled to manage their resources how they see fit.

This is appalling from the managers concerned. Carthy is an utterly \\e commentator, a fact highlighted as far back as 2001 when his commentary on the Waterford v Limerick Munster hurling semi-final was singled out by a number of media outlets for its gross ineptitude. Not only does he get players names wrong consistently (He was awful before the compulsory introduction of helmets in hurling, God knows what he`s been like since! ) , he is a poor imitator of the great Michéal Ó Muircheartaigh. Darragh Moloney is infinitely superior as a radio commentator to Carthy, as he once again demonstrated last Sunday. Moloney made a dull match sound good, Carthy would have made the 2009 All-Ireland hurling final sound as exciting as a bank teller counting the cash on a wet Wednesday in Ballyjamesduff.

RTE are a joke of an organisation, we`ve seen how "relatives" of important people always seem to ascend there.
Whatever about the rights and wrongs of RTE and/or Brian Carthy these men have every right to choose not to speak to them. I applaud their courage in any case.

Is it April 1st, what gives these lads the impression that they have any right to comment not to mention take action on the deployment of RTE personell, the whole thing is so bizarre that there is no precedent as to how to deal with it, are managers now to be allowed pick and choose preferred referees.

Christ almighty this is unreal, this has absolutely nothing got to do with GAA managers high up or low down. RTE are completely within their rights and who they wish to have commentating games is their call. Much as I admire Mickey Harte, telling RTE how to run their business is way out of line. + Carty is probably the worst commentator I`ve ever had the misfortune of hearing, actually it would be a toss between himself and Jim Carney, now that`s saying something.

Agree with most of the posters here, RTE should tell mickey harte et al to take a running jump, if RTE chose to put on someone like that lunatic from Aherlow, they would be entirely within their rights, its none of harte`s or any other manager`s business who RTE deploy to use as commentators.

Christ, you wouldnt even see this level of prima donna carry on in the professional games.
Its none of their business who RTE choose to replace MM with. McCarthy certainly wouldnt get my vote and he is seems to irritate quite a few people. I think RTE realise there is no such thing as replacing MM and have spread the games out more this year, perhaps with a view to seeing who performs best/is received the best.

Managers are right to express an opinion regarding games presentation, albeit a bit of an unusual gripe in this instance. The overreaction on here is a lot worse than anything the managers said.

Managers should do what they are been paid to do, MANAGE, twould be more in their line to be concentrating on getting their players to be accurately able to kick a ball 30 yards and getting rid of the negative sh1t they play than worrying about who`s commentating on them.

Surely Justin McNulty or Kieran McGeeney don`t have to give interviews to RTE or anyone else if they don`t want to. Their job is to prepare and manage the Laois and Kildare teams. No more and no less.
