Looking forward to it. I still have another few months to call my packers champions!! It`s so hard to gage the NFL till about week 3-4 I think. It`s so competative, a breath of fresh air imo that nobody really dominates except for the odd dynasty. Pats/Cowboys/49ers/Steelers in that exclusive club.

I was going to start a college football thread lad but I don`t think there`s too many college fans here. People outside the states don`t realise how big it is. Here in the southeast it`s easily bigger than pro football.

I do have a soft spot for the saints seeing as they`re my nearest team and I love the big easy so will be enjoyable watching on Thursday. I see the jets play the cowgirls on sunday. I must admit I`m a rex ryan fan, he`s a gas man!

Let`s play some football !!!!

Anybody care to suggest what team I should `adopt` for this season?
(not that I`m abandoning the Redskins, just that I`m fully expecting another depressing season )

The only requirements for an adopted team:
They must be expected to be contenders.
They`ve got a powerful `smash-`em aside` star running back!

Who`s their running back, dolphin?
The re-incarnation of my man Barry Sanders?

I love watching the various Texas and Oklahoma match-ups, especially when they`re competitive.
Which of the Texas teams is based in Buddy Holly`s hometown of Lubbock?

Ya.I know the feelin Jimbo.but you really have not had enough time to come to terms with today`s defeat yet to be lookin for even more heartache in another code down the road. You have a full plate with ManC for the next seven or eight months or so and you just know you are going to catch scorching heat on this site from the gangsta rappers across the street.

The search for the Two in a Row is hurling`s version of the Search for the Holy Grail, lad: I`m battle-hardened enough against that.
Ditto the gangsta rappers `35 years` taunt!

Bring `em on!

The big 2 in texas are the texas longhorns and texas tech. Must be the longhorns as tech are in Austin. I think. No love lost between those 2 states. I`m an LSU man myself, it would be all too easy to support the irish!

I`ve got a Notre Dame cap: I remember the big buzz about them under Lou Holtz when Jimmy Johnson`s  (Miami )  Hurricanes were the major opposition.
I travelled to Miami quite a bit in those days, though never to a game but I liked JJ`s brashness

ESPN made a film about JJ and the hurricanes, though I never saw it. Apparently JJ used to recruit new talent by going to the `hoods himself. Kind of a maverick I suppose. He did well with them. I know ND and Miami battled a bit in those days.

Yeah, I saw it: I think their reputation worsened with JJ`s successor.
I remember Vinny Testaverde was their big QB, though he never matched his college reputation in the NFL, despite his longevity.

Roll on thursday night, I`ll be digging out the Reggie White one from the wardrobe again, was back in dry storage for the summer. LSU looked good last night, although Oregon were down to a freshman running back and his 2 fumbles led to 14 points. Havent looked up LSU schedule but they`ve beaten one of their toughest opponents in their first game. Boise State put on a helluva show as well, was flicking between both of em.

They`ve got a powerful `smash-`em aside` star running back!

Hard luck this morning lad, Kilkenny backs just smothered yeer forwards and picked up every breaking ball. Re the NFL, any one of the following could be there or there abouts:
Packers obviously, as long as the Super Bowl "hangover" doesn`t hurt them. But with Finley and Grant back in that line up, and Starks with a few more games under his belt, they should be in the shake up.
Patriots, Will be still smarting from the beat down the Jets put on them last year in the play offs, be afraid, be very afraid!!!
Steelers, perennial play off contenders, smash mouth football to boot.
Falcons, too good not to be included, but in a tough division.
Saints, explosive offense, not too shabby on defense either.
Cowboys, Romo back healthy, and a bevy of talented receivers to throw to.
Giants, Jacobs if back to his big, brutal and bruising self with Bradshaw, as tough a running back tandem in the league. Eli looks a bit shaky in the pre season but should come good, lost a few players in their secondary which obviously will hurt them defensively.
Colts, but will need Peyton back healthy in a hurry, look awful without him hence the signing of Kerry Collins as a back up.
Eagles, yeah, yeah, yeah, the Dream Team, and everyones pick for the NFC title, $100 million contract for Vick, wouldn`t invest the kids college fund on them just yet tho.

Teams that could produce shocks:
The Lions, eventually they have to start winning, good nucleus put together by Schwartz, could be a surprise team.
Browns, just have a hunch about them this year.
49ers, if ever Smith gets his finger out and plays like he`s not afraid to lose, let her rip kid, let her rip.
Bucs, unlucky last year, should have learned from it.
Teams that may regress:
The Jets!!!!!  (please, I`m sick of hearing how great they are, and I`m surrounded by their fans, and I still don`t think they`re that good )
Bears, won the NFC north last year, don`t think they`ll have as good a year this time round.

Now Jim, that`s about all i know, my heart says Packer repeat but my head says Pats or Steelers.

you know what just follow the Pack. Here`s why:

Their coach is McCarthy  (obviously a bit of a Paddy in him )
Their back up QB is Flynn  (see above )
They have a Grant, Finley, Williams, Collins playing for them  (see above again )
They wear Green White and Gold
Their 3 rd jersey is Blue and Gold
They`re the only publicly owned team in the NFL, ya gotta shout for the little people now and again

They wear Green White and Gold

Can`t wait for this. My Broncos have a tough season ahead of them. QB controversy over for the time being now that Orton was named starter. After last season you`d assume this season couldn`t possibly be worse but with the Bolts and the Chiefs fighting it out for the AFC West title it will be a battle between the Broncos and the Jokeland Raiders to avoid bottom spot. Looking at the fixture list I see another 4-12 season and bottom spot two years running.

As for the Superbowl take your pick between

Chargers
Packers
Eagles
Pats
Jets
Saints

Wouldn`t be so pessimistic about Oakland. They were 6-0 in the AFC West last year and with McFadden healthy they could win 9 games. The West should be San Diego`s to lose though. Denver will battle it out with Cincinatti and Carolina for the worst record in football and a ticket to the Andrew Luck Bowl.

I think the Giants, Bears and Ravens could be surprise strugglers this year. That Ravens Defense is ageing badly and an improving Cleveland  (excellent first year coach in Pat Shurmur )  might nick second place in the AFC North.

The AFC East should be New England`s with Gang Green making the playoffs on 10-6. Buffalo will be better  (acquired well after the lockout ) , while Miami are poor with no sign of improvement. Chad Henne won`t cut it at QB and Reggie Bush will end up returning punts.

Houston will finally break through in the South. Wade Philips is on board as defensive co-ordinator and will sort them out to the extent that they won`t give points back as soon as they score them. Indy could struggle. Peyton is unhealthy and 40-yr-old Kerry Collins just ain`t the answer.

Philly look to have serious weapons in the NFC East and would be my preseason favourite to win it all. Who knows what kind of Dallas team will turn up on any given day? As mentioned earlier, I don`t fancy NYG at all and if Washington go with Rex Grossman at QB they could well end up in the Andrew Luck Lottery as well.

Detroit will be a Wildcard as runners-up to the Pack in the North. I think they`ll be joined by Tampa Bay as the South may well be the most competitive divsion in football, Carolina excepted.
Any two of New Orleans, Tampa Bay and Atlanta will make it in, with my money on the Saints and rapidly improving Bucs.

Out West, Sam Bradford may well be the man to lead the Rams to a Division title. Kevin Kolb is a good acquisition for Arizona but they`ll concede more than they score. Seattle and San Fran will provide mediocrity.

Jets-Eagles Superbowl with Gang Green to end the long wait  (I hope!! )

I don`t trust Romo or Smith, baba, although I wouldn`t be inclined to adopt the Cowboys, anyhow
(or the Giants, come to that, although I enjoyed Eli proving the doubters wrong against the Pats )
I like the Jets defence and Rex Ryan but it wouldn`t do for me and yankeelad be agreeing about everything!
Don`t like the Bears much although I loved Chicago

The only NFC East team I`d possibly cheer for are the hapless Eagles: I enjoyed my visit there, also

I might pick the Lions if only because Barry Sanders was one of my all-time fave running backs, probably second only to John Riggins.

As for yesterday: it was kind of like the same pattern of the Leinster Final.
For whatever reason, in both games, Kilkenny were able to grab the game by the scruff of the neck in the first 15 minutes and squeezed the life out of the opposition, and set the foundation for their victory.

The difference yesterday is that despite everything we could have at least snatched a draw, even if our play didn`t merit it.
I think we drew the wrong conclusions from the Dublin game: we were right that The Cats weren`t going to deploy a permanent extra back but we didn`t seem to consider how they would go about denying our front eight time and space

I`ll be shouting for America`s Team for the season - the one and only Dallas Cowboys.

Tony Romo back to full fitness, Stephen McGee impressing in pre-season and also with players like Dez Bryant, Miles Austin, Felix Jones and Jason Witten there`s reason to be optimistic.

Cowboys are in a tough N.F.C. East division with the Eagles and the Giants and have a tough schedule but here`s hoping.

Cowboys to be the dark horses of the N.F.L. this season, making the playoffs at least.

There is no Superbowl going to Dallas as long as Romo is the QB. A very good QB no doubt but a leader he is not and when it comes down to the business end he is always found wanting.
