Very nice and well preserved. A couple of days would see it all though. You could take a day trip to Medjugore and Mostar  (famous bridge )  while you`re there. Good ferry service to the other Croatian islands from there. Hvar well worth a look. Split also nice but worth no more than day as well.

One of the nicest cities you will ever see. A walled city. You will not be disappointed. Can`t recommend highly enough.

Lots of restaurants to choose from, prices are ok same as here.
Have to walk the walls of the city.
Many nearby islands also worth day trips.

Lovely city, book an appartment by the sea. Stayed there 4 or 5 yrs ago and guy who we rented appartment from collected us from airport and brought us back when we were leaving. Can`t for the life of me remember the name of appartments.

Thanks lads.

Was there last summer myself. It is definetly the most scenically beatiful place i have been. A place to bring a girlfriend no doubt.

Prices are similar to Dublin city centre so not sure if that is what you are expecting. (sorry just noticed you are planning on going in May, i was there in July so prices may have been more expensive then )  Extremely touristy as well.

One last thing the beaches are stone so not as easy to cruise around as the sand we have here.

Here is where i stayed. it was a guesthouse kind of affair with no real food on offer. Family that ran it were sound and it had a nice view out to the sea.

I went there in Sept 2010 and stayed in a self catering apt high up in the old town. The Old town is fantastic - it`s a walled city, shaped like a bowl  (size wise, maybe 10 hurling pitches at a guess ) . Really clean & lovely bars resturants. Very expensive in places though. Similiar prices to home with much lower quality food. Make sure you:
1. walk the walls.2. Find the lovely "bars"  (there are 2 )  through doors in the walls which lead you out to these darkened terraces high above the water at night - magic! 3. Cava beach is the only beach really worth mentioning.  (the Croations would call a bucket of sand a beach )  Cava is a bus ride out of town, but worth it. 4. If you are staying outside the old town there are great places to eat & its not so expensive. 5 Take a bus trip to Medjugore or Mostar 6. Take a boat trip out to the islands. Really nice. Enjoy.

Was there in Oct `03 and would agree with most of the above. Mostar & Medjugorje are both well worth a day trip. When I was there it seemed that journeys were made through graveyards what with all the headstones around. Also there was hardly a building of importance standing that wasn`t riddled with bullet holes. Walking the walls of the old town are a must. Spending all your time in the old town is also a sure fire way of blowing your money. At that time there was a massive difference in the price between public transport and taxis so beware  (25c v 10euro iirc for a spin home from the old town ) .
Went to Cetinje the medieval capital of Montenegro and also to Budva, an exclusive enough seaside resort. The drive there was fantastic, a series of S bends up and down the side of a mountain.

Went there last July, first week or so. Lovely place, definitely the sort of place you`d go with a girlfriend. Was at a wedding myself, I think we landed smack bang in the middle of some sort of 45-day festival. The place was packed over the weekend, but not in a bad way. Great atmosphere on the nights out, people were friendly.

I stayed in a hotel outside the town, but friends stayed in the Old Town itself. I`d have preferred that, but I`m not sure I could have lived without the air con, the heat was horrendous!

Dubroknik, especially the old town is lovely, the fly catchers and hawkers are a bit annoying though.
If you want to relax, enjoy great seafood, top class olive oil, wine and brandy in a place with nearly no cars or people try the island of Mljet.
Had 4 magical days there a few years back.
Sure MRS Badger would like it too..
Loads of other islands to try too
The national park brought me to Mljet

Hi Badger, I am thinking of heading to Dubrovnik with the missus in late June/early July. Did ye go to Medjugorje or Montegro? Any other day trips worth going on?

Actually didnt fit either of them in. Did a day trip to Mostar just over the border to Bosnia. Lovely bridge there but the town has far from recovered from the war. Dirt cheap though. I hear Montenegro is a more scenic trip. Also did a boat trip to the Elaphite Islands which is a good day out. The boat takes you to 3 islands and you get to wander around. Plenty to look at in the old city, it'll entrall you. A cable care up the mountain is worth a go for the stunning views and an exhibition of the attack that took place in 91.
Get a 7 day bus ticket too while your there. Gives you 20 bus journeys and free entry into some museums
