Very suprised that Tom Kenny and Eoghan Murphy start. Looks like Cork have learned their lesson regarding tippy tappy hurling and JBM has picked a team of mainly direct hurlers.

If Tipp and Cork could win this weekend, it would set up a nice early season meeting for the old rivals.
I thought Pa Cronin would be midfielder this year, his performance against Tipp last year was top class. If Cork get him going they can build a good team under JBM.

I reckon he will end up midfield as the league begins. Can`t read a whole pile into this team at this early stage especially as Cork have more lads playing Fitzgibbon cup this year then they have had in some time. Intresting select ion. Decent enough team for this competition though, although the inclusion of the bear at full forward will have a lot of us down here scratching our heads.

UCC were in Fitzgibbon action today. Impressive for them from Cork were Bud Hartnett and Dean Brosnan (both from the bench ) .
However it was a Waterford man that stole the show, a now fully-grown bear of a man Paudie Mahony banged in about 3-7.

As a neutral this surely must be good news for Cork.
It`s become clear over the last few years that the 2004/5 team is no longer good enough, so a serious overhaul was needed. Perhaps Denis Walsh felt his hands were a bit tied.
Not sure if the young lads are good enough, but give them a chance. Cork being Cork, they won`t be down for long, and they have a great man in JBM leading them.
It would be great for them to get an early pre-league crack at Tipp as well.

1. Anthony Nash - deserves a chance to keep Cusack on his toes (as does Coleman ) but Cusack being captain makes him a certain starter
2. Damien Cahalane - should get tried out full back too
3. Eoin Dillon - deserves a go but I have my doubts at the top level
4. Conor O`Sullivan - lovely corner back, only problem is a lack of physicality but perhaps he`s bulked up
5. Christopher Joyce - his best position is in the half back line unlike in the corner where he played for the u21s last year. Good prospect
6. Ross Cashman - interesting to see how he gets on. Heard he`s been going well enough so far
7. Tom Kenny - last chance for a great servant I`m afraid
8. Cathal Naughton - complete enigma. Can`t see him starting midfield come championship but always a good option from the bench
9. Cian McCarthy - Surely he`ll swap with Pa Cronin
10. Brian Corry - physical player in the half forwards, something we`ve been lacking
11. Pa Cronin - has to start midfield come championship
12. Luke O`Farrell - don`t think he`s a half forward, should do well in the corner though
13. Patrick Horgan - prefer to see him full forward and perhaps drifting out to the half forward line during game to mix it up
14. Eoghan Murphy - no comment
15. Ryan Clifford - lovely hurler. Again physicality may be an issue at this level
p.d.s.

hopefully it will be a good year for cork hurling[not at the expense of waterford],as,even if are not from the county, you have to admire the colour and style they bring to any big match, love the way they play the game, loved beating them, but i think a strong cork challenge would make hurling as strong as it can possibly be at this present moment in time,.I think from following cork hurling at club level,ye are lacking serious scoring forward`s at this moment, and a quick question, any sign of ye`re star ball winning forward from the u21s last year, playing hurling this year?,i think he would be a serious asset.

You have pretty much summed it up there Collig. The playing of Tom Kenny is a good idea the more I think about it. Will either show that he has the hunger and belief to get back to his best or could show that unfortunetly its time for him to call it a day.
Naughton is a strange one, with pace like his you would think he would be a must on any inter county team but seems to go missing for large parts of games. Is it a confidence thing or a lack of physicality or what I dont know.
P.D.S we will see Aidan Walsh and possibly Ciaran Sheehan playing and starting for the Cork hurlers in the future but it won`t be this year. Hopefully next season.

I don`t get the no comment on Eoghan Murphy, will you or someone else explain.
Personally i think Pa Cronin has the makings of a fine centre forward,

He has all the attributes but he has played at full, centre and half forward previously without seriously impressing. He moved to midfield last year, had an excellent league campaign and was very good against Tipp. Keep him midfield I say and try and find someone to partner him there.

Cronin has all you`d need in a top class centre forward and i think this is where he should be given a decent run. He could also be a fine midfielder but this is a position where Cork are not too light on. In my opinion a decent inter county midfielder can be creatred whereas a CF needs to have all the tools beforehand.

You do realise that all Cronin`s hurling with Cork before last year was played in the forwards? And we`re certainly not overloaded with quality in midfield at the moment either. The likes of McLoughlin and Egan if he doesn`t play in the backs have potential but Cronin did the business there last year.
Experiment away in the Waterford Crystal and to an extent in the NHL but I`d be surprised (and disappointed ) if Cronin isn`t midfield come championship.

I think he has developed a lot as a hurler in the last year or so, become stronger etc. He was always savage under a high ball, this was and is his best attribute and is better utilised at centre forward.
I will bow to your superior knowledge re midfield, i haven`t lived in Cork for a long time and see very few local matches, like i said before i think midfielders can be create d, the modern day midfielder is more of an athlete than hurler

Put simply, if I was to make a list of the top five lads that should be tried out at full-forward then Eoghan wouldn`t make it.

Well summed up, although I don`t get this obsession with moving Hoggie to full-forward, think we need someone with more of a presence in there like Cian Mac, Rob White or Leigh Desmond (doesn`t want to be involved unfortunately ) .

Id prefer to see Cronin midfield as well think he plays his best hurling there and apart from a moment of madness agaist Offaly was our most consistent performer last year. Would like to see how Cian Mac would do center forward for a game or too. A lad id like to see as well at some stage would be Tractons Micheal O Sullivan, thought he played well for CIT and the U21s last year. A real skillfull busy player, Needs a bit of bulking up but to me looks like a guy who could be moulded into a midfielder.

Didn`t realise Desmond wasn`t on the panel by choice. Did I hear he does martial arts or something these days? Cian Mc is worth a go in both central positions in the forward line for his physical presence.
As for Hoggie, I just want management to be open to moving him around and not just as a corner forward or nowhere and then taking him off if he`s finding it difficult to get into a game. Drawn Munster final in 2010 was crying out for such a move while Horgan was largely anonymous in the corner and then he was taken off instead of being moved around.

Michael Sul is supposed to be on the panel. Him and Drake were more then good enough for C.I.T. last year to be involved in the league this year.

Both involved in Fitzgibbon cup at the moment so we will have to wait a while before we get to see them getting their chances. Did I read somewhere that Drake is flying at the moment and along with Paudie Sull did wreck for CIT against Cork recently.
Collig as far as im aware Desmond is big into cage fighting and while he is happy enough to play for his club he feels inter county training would have a negative impact on his cage fighting. Pity as he would be an option but each to their own I suppose. Where has Bill Cooper gone? Haven`t heard him mentioned all winter, is he involved in the panel?

Fairly sure Bill Cooper has been involved in some of the pre-season games to date. Can`t imagine him being drop ped, no doubt he`ll be on the bench come Sunday.
