Topic: Players loved at home... detested outside their county

I know that we tend to love players from our own teams, but some tend to be particular favourites. The same players can be absolutely detested outside of their own counties. From my perspective, these players are generally heart on their sleeves types, which we all love in our own players, but cannot stand when he`s against us.

The one that springs to mind for me is Brendan Lynskey. I could never take to him, thought he was one of the most annoying players I ever saw, but he tended to be adored by Galway people.

Ya, Lynskey would definitely have hero status in Galway. John Leahy would probably have been the most disliked player, on the team we disliked the most!

Diarmaid O`Sullivan for me. Couldn`t stand the fella when he played and still can`t stand him now.

He`s a cult hero to all Cork fans though it seems.

Probably a sign of a good player when other counties don`t like you, to be fair.

Liam Dunne for us I suppose, hero, sweet hurler and good neighbour and I hope good manager or dirty b**8*cks depending on your viewpoint.

Pj O`Connell from Clare is one for me. Fine hurler but i just never liked the cut of his jib.
Another would be Noel Lane from Galway, his goals killed Tipperary in the late 80`s.

Was Ciaran Whelan liked by the Dubs? Not my favourite player.

John Leahy must have been one of the most polarizing players ever to play inter county, loved by Tipp supporters hated it seems by everyone else, there always seemed an electric atmosphere to a game when he involved.

Mullane seems to rub a lot of people up the wrong way, particularly all the Tipp lads I know for some reason-the Cork fans always seemed to slag the sh1t out of him and bait him but they`d always say some player after whereas most Tipp lads I know can`t stand him.

Leahy and Diarmuid would certainly be up there with players I never liked but are loved in their own county.

Michael Duignan, Diarmuid O` Sullivan never rated him, a good man for the massive clearance but taken to the cleaners a few times and always glossed over because of some catch or clearance and Donal Og Cusack good puckouts decent enough keeper but seriously overrated.

Brian Lohan ...never liked him, did an awful lot of pulling and dragging not mention fouling of opponents when he had the chance and the ref had a blind eye to it, but ah sure the clare crowd loved his massive clearances, as for that red helmet..ffs

Davy Fitz - same and his general unsporting behaviour giving out about every ball, even blantant ones over the bar, never could take a beating when his team lost - remember him for example after Cork beat them in 2005 was like a lunatic running down the pitch after the whistle - while the other clare boys had the grace he was just a sore loser - some will call it passion etc blah blah but he could learn from those players who take a lost with manners.

Tipp - no players really that annoyed me.

Limerick - again no players that really ______- me off.

Waterford - of that waterford team the 3 that i wouldnt like would be John Mullane, Big Dan and Eoin Kelly - the 3 some showboaters and kissing the the badge \\e - never liked them.

Kilkenny - Tommy Walsh, great player but sneaky fouling when going for the high ball.

Offaly - generally sound lads.

Ill come back to more soon.

In football Ryan McMenamin would definitely be one, Paul Galvin, Joe Brolly, Conor Mortimer, Noel O`Leary, Ciarán Whelan, as already mentioned would be some that opposing fans can`t stand!!

In hurling Tommy Walsh, Phily Larkin, Wille O`Connor, the Waterford lads mentioned, Dónal Óg, Gardiner, Lohans, Colin Lynch.

It`s generally players that play on the edge  (stickmen!! ) and put in the hits or else showboaters!!

Did you dislike Aisake when he used to be lepping around the place clutching the badge after scoring a big goal too?

Just curious is all, you cited the badge kissing as something you disliked about some Waterford players, I`m only asking if you disliked it when Aisake used to do it?

may i register my outright disgust at this entire thread and where it is going
as a hurling man first and foremost i can honestly say that i never detested anyone with the skill ability and bottle to wear a jersey of any kind at any level.
the names mentioned so far read as a whos who of intercounty hurling over the past twenty years or more, and all all stars to boot.
having said that i would have to say that the footballer list of my most disliked players is a pretty long one but four beauties stand proud and tall above all others for me
the ape like number 5 from the great kerry team of the seventies
that smiling assassin wearing 6 for the jackeens during the late eighties/early ninties
the man whose father wore 6 for mickos heroes and who came home from a profitable  sojourn down under
the tatooed fashionista from the kingdom.
answers on a postcard please!!!!!!
