Just watched this tonight.Brilliant film one of the best crime movies I have seen. Its just incredibly stylish, with brilliant action and the soundtrack is class aswell. The acting all round is brilliant. Its hard to believe it didnt get nominated for any Oscars.Ryan Gosling character was like a combination of Alain Delon from Le Smaourai and Clint Eastwood

Good film but not a great film.
Excellent sound track and well made but its a type of film thats been done to death.
Gosling was good but not outstanding imho. Bit like Ledger in the batman film decent performance but talked up way beyond what he was. I didn`t like the end at all. Kinda poxy. I would put the end up there with the end of Heat as another good film with a poxy ending. Almost seemed rushed to get the film finished.
7/10.

What was your issue with the ending.
I thought Gosling was excellent he had real presence and create d a very mysterious character that you wanted to learn more about. His character was just coolness personified

All style no substance. Never looked forward to a film as much but it was hugely disappointing.
Incredibly shot film, great soundtrack but the plot was thin. They had one central metaphor about the scorpion and the frog which was quite subtly done until he phones the bad guy and tells him "the frog didn`t make it across the river." Talk about ramming it down our throats. A stylish film with little to say and lacking in any subtlety or originality. Because I expected more from it I was hugely disappointed, had I gone in with no expectations I might have thought it was alright.

It is an action film and action films have very little to say in general.Did any of Tarantinos films have anything to them apart from entertainment.
Drive is really like Tarantinos films an homage to films, and it has an excellent realistic love story which drives the plot. Its very rare a film has a central character that you want to know so much about but thankfully it is left to our imagination in lesser films we would have had some pointless backstory that would taken away alot of the edge.

The oscars this year completely shunned anything with an 18`s cert. (How Fassbender didn`t get nominated for Shame is beyond me ) Drive was a brilliant film deserving of oscar recognition and you`re right, the soundtrack is awesome as well.

You were asking questions about Goslings character because you were given nothing at all to work on in the film. He was just a driver one minute and the next a one man wrecking machine with psycotic tendencies. Never told where he came from and ended up wondering where he went. We were parachuted into a few weeks of his life - indeed all the main characters lives.
(they never even tried to tell us how Hal fell on such hard times after walking out on his family )
The ending saw this killer who was cleaning house, and have practically all loose ends tidied up - except this one last guy - and he then lets this guy get the drop on him. It just did not sit well with me as an ending to the film.
He drives off as the wounded road warrior - where have we seen that before.
Kneebreaker said it - all style no substance.

A back story for Goslings character would have ruined the edge and aura around him.Obviously something happend in his past that caused him to be such a solitary figure prone to violence but I think it is better that it is left to our imagination.

It does, but Goslings character is not a great character. Its the bit mystery that surprised people. Thats doesn`t necessarily make it a great film either.

Watched this last weekend and really enjoyed-brilliantly shot, great soundtrack and acting. I like movies that don`t wrap everything up in a nice easy package like the majority of movies that are aimed at American idiots. Thought Gosling`s character was excellent as it was slowly revealed to us throughout the movie. Two thumbs up and I was thinking about watching it again tonight.

I wasn`t hugely impressed with this film, the first time I saw it but there is something special about it. The soundtrack is the making of the movie. From the opening moment of the opening scene it takes the movie up a level. You are introduced to the main character with a bit of a dark side who is cool and freindly a potentially good family man and lover, a hero, a talented man with great promise. You are made to like this character before you can see the darker side he possesses.
I suppose it is this journey the central charcter takes from the light to the dark side that draws people into the movie. It has been done before, there are similarities with Punisher and other movies but this movie is just better.

Respectfully, I disagree with a couple of points. It would be a stretch to call this an action film as so little happens between the action. The lulls are interminable and serve to remind you that you are watching a director indulge himself in over-the-top violence and pretentious dialogue.
Although also violent, Tarantino`s films are laced with great dialogue and, fundamentally, characters you could warm to.There is great entertainment in Tarantino films because he judges the tempo perfectly, Refn has not with Drive imo.
I felt sorry for Ryan Gosling, he had very little to work with but made the best of a bad job. The love story was pretty disengaging I thought as Carey Mulligan`s character had nothing about her. I don`t think staring blankly into each others eyes for 15 minutes without talking is tantamount to a realistic love story.
Don`t get me wrong, I see why some people like it, but to be talked about as a great film, as a piece of art, it comes up short for me.

Pretty silly post, the film was brilliantly made and very entertaining, there is something to be said for films that are just very very good without being unique.

It should be said I enjoy lean films that don`t feel the need to cram `back story` and explanation down the viewer`s throat. `Shame` is similar in this sense.

I`m waiting for the DVD to drop in price
It probably would have been better to catch it on a big screen with a good sound system but I somehow missed it.
I liked the director`s `Pusher` and `Fear X`, but there were signs in the latter film, and the other films in the `Pusher` trilogy, that he`s not averse to pretentiousness when he`s run out of ideas
Has anybody who`s seen it also seen Walter Hill`s `Driver`

I thought the tempo was perfect in Drive, the general calmness of the film builds tension and the brief moments of frenetic violence and action made the action scenes all the more shocking

Brilliant film! Revealing anything more about the Driver`s background would have ruined the character.
Kneebreaker, to call this film all style and no substance and then to compare it unfavourably to Tarantino is silly, Tarantino is nothing but (poor ) style over substance who made one good film, two ok ones, and then a load of complete rubbish.

Kneebreaker I would be interested in which part of the dialogue you found pretentious-I can`t think of a single scene where I would describe the dialogue as pretentious. Also, how you could describe the violence in Drive as over the top and in the same breath extol Tarrantino is pretty strange. I see what you`re saying about no background for the characters but that`s part of the brilliance of the film imo. The normal Hollywood package of set storyline, give background, play out scene and finish with happy ending does not apply here and I think that is a good thing.

Watched it last weekend and really enjoyed it. Strikes me as the kind of film I`ll love even more on a repeat viewing which I intend to do very soon. Thought Gosling was excellent. Conveyed a lot while saying very little. The soundtrack was also superb and fit in so well with the whole style of the film.
