Divisional Boards in Limerick GAA must be scrapped

Its about time that these boards were disbanded and all the senior games run just like the underage in Limerick. The present situation is madness whereby you have 25 clubs in the west and only 9 or 10 in the east. The whole thing is totally unbalanced. The political strokes pulled by the West and city boards to keep their precious junior hurling championships were pathetic. How can any reasonable person justify a championship that has 3 teams in one division and 12 teams in another. It should be about the players and i know for a fact most of the players playing junior hurling want an all county championship but the problem in Limerick is that the players dont usually go to the meetings so the old timers make the decisions. If all the divisional leagues and championships were disbanded there could be county leagues with 12 team groups and county championships with 2 groups of 6 all the way down to junior F. There should also be 12 a side leagues and championships as quite a few Limerick b sides are finding it difficult to field team and are disbanding. This would guarantee every club player at least 16 games a year. Im sick of the `traditionalists` going on about the divisional championships. I have plenty of divisional medals and they mean nothing to me compared to a county medal. Its about time these divisional officers thought about the good of the game and not their free tea and sangwiches at their weekly board meetings. The divisions were drawn up in a different era when transport was mainly bike and horse and trap. They have out lived their usefulness and should be disbanded. Clare have one board and is geographically bigger than Limerick.Limerick players want to play a variety of teams and not the same teams every year.

I would completely agree, divisional boards have completely past their sell by date and are no longer serving a purpose. Take the west for example 12 Junior A hurling clubs as opposed to four in south, realistically it is far harder for them to win the county with such competition. The divisional boards day is gone why should the junior a and b championships be subjected to a divisional championship when the senior and intermediate sides have an all county championship?Shouldnt all championships be singing off the same hymme sheet? Many clubs now are no longer taking part in the divisional leagues as they will be playing the same sides again in the championship, at minor level you are finding that there could only 3 three teams in the championship. Take last years West minor hurling championship there were only three teams, two of which were amalgamations. Even at minor level if championships were run on an all county basis then players would have a greater amount of games, you would be playing a wider variety of teams and players would prosper as a result. We had the opportunity to change this at the first county board meeting of the year but of course the divisional boards put their foot down. Do they realy have the interests of the players at hand?I dont think so. Any player would take a county championship medal over a divisional medal any day, despite what a divisional chairman would have you believe.

Ye are all missing the point.
The divisional boards are there to support the county board and keep the status quo.
They claim their expenses and ensure that the septic regime is continued. If the county board and all the divisions vote as one then it is very difficult to implement change that is badly needed in this county.
The amount of gombeen figures involved in Limerick GAA is really sickening

Time for an independent review of Limerick GAA and the proposals should be debated at every club because our present setup will destroy our games in the county in the long run.

This is not a decision that can be taken lightly.
I voted for and widely supported and canvassed for the decision to abolish the divisions at underage a few years ago on the basis of false promises. I look back now and regret the error of my ways. I was brainwashed into believing that certain people with long service were assholes and that they were doing irreparable damage to Limerick Gaa.
Okay some of them were not perfect but I wish I judged them myself instead of taking others at their word. The new format has not been the success that we keep hearing that it has been. The spin doctors have too much say sometimes but maybe the spin doctors are not always right.
I would preach caution this time around and I think that mindframe decided the voting a few weeks back. It is possible to revamp the Junior A championship without abolishing the divisions and that should be explored.

The first thing I would say is that give or take a couple there are probably 30 Junior A hurling teams in Limerick. How many of these clubs voted to keep the current system in place??? There is definitely a need to do something with the Junior A hurling, perhaps if the South and East were put together it would make more sense, but I would try to keep the west intact, and build the championship around that rather than trying to dismantle it.
I think the Junior B has to stay with the divisions because the Junior B teams are essentially second teams, and most players will be subs on the first string teams, and playing challenge/league games with them too, so it makes no sense to send them all over the County. I make no apologies for saying that as a Galbally player its a lot easier to go to Hospital/Herbertstown, Galtee Gaels and places like that for Junior Football games than to be sent to West Limerick. If you come out of the Division there is time enough for travelling.
The problem with dismantling Divisional boards is that for all the talk of clusters/regions etc. there will still be teams travelling longer journeys than they would have been under the old system. We will be told in theory that nobody will be sent too far away, but when all comes to all, there will be no boundaries to put that into practice. We cant get them to to to Hospital from Galbally in Junior Football, what hope would we have of getting them to Newcastlewest and Abbeyfeale??

How come they have a county league in Kerry where the distances are much longer? Ballylongford played Valentia last year and their trainer told me they had to leave Bally at 2 for a 6 O clock start in Valentia. Why cant Limerick teams travel when the longest journey between clubs might be an hour and a half. Its the backward, small minded insular mentality of a lot of Limerick GAA folk thats the main problem in Limerick GAA. You can use political talk all you like SLR but the groups of 12 is the way forward for Limerick GAA and the divisions have to go.

Its like this, we cant get out a Junior B team to play a match 15 minutes away, so you can kiss goodbye to Junior B if you want to go all county with that. Its not like Junior B is so relevant in the greater scheme of things that it needs two groups of 6 or whatever.
Given the current costs associated with travelling, I would seriously question any team that was sent from Ballylongford to Valentia. Surely there were enough of teams for that Division within closer reach of Valentia. Unless the players had a bonding session planned for West Kerry afterwards, that sort of travelling doesnt make sense.

SLR re Ballylongford travelling to Valentia or other 2 to 3 hour drives in Kerry..this is due to their highly competitive leagues which is county wide....ive even heard of teams staying in B & Bs the night before to avoid that length of a journey on the day of a match...they all tend to be played on sundays not like the poor effort at co leagues limerick have... played on tuesday nights to get them out of the way!!

In fairness to the county board they have fixed the county league games for the weekend this year. Its up to the players and clubs to make it a success now.

I said that there should be championships of 2 groups of 6 all the way down to Junior F if needed. B teams could be given a choice if they wanted to enter in the county league or not.

Divisions have met and agreed to resist all attempts to disband them.
