Former Melbourne footballer Jim Stynes has died, aged 45.
Stynes` wife Sam said confirmed the AFL legend passed away at 8.20am "in the comfort of his own home, surrounded by friends and family".
"Jim was pain free, dignified and peaceful. (His children ) Matisse and Tiernan were present," Sam Stynes wrote in a statement posted on Facebook.
She said the former Melbourne Demons president, who has battled an aggressive form of cancer, "continued to defy the odds" in his last week of life, attending a Melbourne vs Hawthorn match, attending son Tiernan`s seventh birthday party and enjoying dinner on Friday night at Topolino`s Italian restaurant "in his much-loved suburb of St Kilda."
"In his final days Jim was immersed with insurmountable love and tenderness surrounded by his family and some close friends in the comfort of his own home.
"On behalf of Jim my heartfelt thanks to all those who have so generously cared for, guided and supported Jim throughout his challenging cancer battle.
"It is an incredibly sad time, however Jim in his passing, has made us see that in our grief that we can smile in our hearts for a beautiful man who will forever hold a special place in the hearts of many. Jim’s lesson is that life was to be challenged and treasured."
AFL chief exc utive Andrew Demetriou last night sent a message of support to the Brownlow medal winner and his family after it was revealed his health had taken a turn for the worse.
"We hear reports that Jim Stynes is gravely ill, can you updete us as to the situation?" Mike Sheahan asked the AFL chief on Fox Footy`s On the Couch program.
"I can`t say much other than Jim isn`t well as we all know," Demetriou replied.
"And I think at this point in time our thoughts are with Jim and his family."
The 45-year-old underwent brain surgery six times and more than 20 tumours removed in the past three years.
He stepped down from his role as president of Melbourne Football Club last month.
The news comes less than a week after Stynes was presented with a blazer at a Melbourne Football Club commencement dinner.
‘‘Jim was there and was looking quite frail, he didn’t stay all that long but it was great to see him make it,’’ one fan said on an internet forum.
There has been an outpouring of support for Stynes on social media and the former footballer`s name began trending on Twitter in Melbourne last night.

God bless him and keep him. Hard to understand how such a fit man with so much to offer can be cut down in such a horrible way.
May he rest in peace.

One of the greatest ever sportsmen to emerge from this country. They should rename Ballyboden`s GAA grounds after him. A legend.
RIP Jim

Sad, but inevitable news, what a man from a great family, and what a fight he put up, that documentary would bring a tear to a glass eye.
RIP

I think their main pitch, Pairc Ui Mhurachu is already named in memory of someone but their new all weather facility could certainly bear his name with pride.
