Former Waterford hurler Ken McGrath has been appointed as a select or for the county`s senior hurling panel, replacing Nicky Cashin whose departure was announced yesterday.
Cashin stepped down `for personal reasons`, accoring to Waterford manager Michael Ryan whose side face a `must win` clash with Galway in the Allianz Hurling League on Sunday.
McGrath will link up with the squad ahead of this weekend`s Division 1A match, after Ryan confirmed the former All-Star`s appointment to local radio station WLRfm Sport.
McGrath, who turned 34 last month, had a stellar playing career with Mount Sion and Waterford.
With the Déise, the durable defender played from 1996 to 2011 and won four Munster SHC titles, a National League crown and three All-Star awards during that time.
Intresting choice from ryan here is mcgrath too young to go in as a select or?

This sounds very much like a populist choice by the manager aimed at pleasing the existing players.Or am I being cynical

Its either an appointment of absolute genius or an act of appeasement to those calling for his head. I suspect the latter, its looking like the last throw of the dice for Ryan, calling on a big name to do something when things are going against you feels like the last resort of the damned.
I`m not disregarding the great man`s ability to be a competent select or, nor do I doubt his hurling knowledge, but I feel he`s too soon from retirement to be completely objectionable and ruthless in his thinking towards men he`s played with and men I also reckon are his friends.
Basically, unless they overcome the challenge of what looks like a much stronger, harder-working and better Dublin side and avoid relegation I don`t see this ending well for Waterford.

I have a query regarding the Ken McGrath appointment.
We all had it on here on Wed / Thursday. The local radio had it announced on news and sport on Friday morning. Why then did the county board have a meeting in Dungarvan Friday evening to ratify it. We are supposedly broke and yet the county board all travel to Dungarvan to ratify a done deal. Is it just procedure. Surly in this day and age a (video ) conference call could be done.

Why now? Is this because of Kelly coming back? Cullinane should be a good instructor for the full back line anyway.

That`s the official line anyway! Kelly was told after last week`s game that he would be starting today having been previously being told he would be going through a fitness test this week!
The player himself told the manager he couldn`t start as he wasn`t up to match fitness yet so it just goes to show the panic that was there this week. The 2 select ors wanted no part in his return, hence their resignations.
Hopefully Ken and Sean will steady the ship as they will have hugh respect from both the senior and younger members of the panel.

It`s quite a mess, Ryan has handled the Kelly thing badly from the start as I keep saying. He should have been on the first panel and if he wasn`t putting it in then take him off it. The upshot is that Ken and Sean will have huge respect from the players and will perhaps motivate them well. Neither have much experience at a coaching level though.

Interview with Br Philip Ryan here to explain his stepping down.
Fair play to the man for his honesty and dignity.
