The GAA congress this year is being held at the Heritage hotel in County Laois.

It is a fine hotel which i have being to on courses a couple of times. I am fairly sure it is in the hands of a bank at the moment, and being run as a going concern. ( if i am wrong i will delete this thread).

My question is this, was it right for the top brass of the GAA Association to bring its business of Congress to a hotel being run by a bank?

I would say No.

Opinions?

The Hotel had a receiver appointed in 2010. The receiver turned the running of the hotel over to Dalata Management Services who specialise in managing hotels in trouble.

Dalata Management Services (DMS), a division of Dalata Hotel Group, manages hotel assets from the perspective of the owner(s) of each hotel it operates. All properties managed by DMS become Partner Hotels of Dalata Hotel Group, which is the parent company of the Maldron Hotels brand.

DMS provides a complete management solution and focuses on the implementation of the necessary operational changes and the introduction of the appropriate systems and controls to maximise the return to the hotel owners.

The DMS team has a wealth of experience in the management of the hotels though all economic cycles and is the ideal partner to effectively undertake the management of hotel assets.

Properties currently managed by DMS:

5-Star:
The Heritage Golf & Spa Resort (Killenard, Co Laois)

4-Star:
Cavan Crystal Hotel
Citywest Hotel, Conference, Leisure & Golf Resort (Saggart, Co. Dublin)
Clayton Hotel Galway
Diamond Coast Hotel (Enniscrone, Co. Sligo)
Portlaoise Heritage Hotel
Whites of Wexford

3-Star:
Belvedere Hotel (Dublin)
Breaffy House Resort (Castlebar, Co. Mayo)
Clare Inn Hotel & Suites (Dromoland, Co. Clare)
Finnstown Country House Hotel (Lucan, Co. Dublin)
Shamrock Lodge Hotel (Athlone, Co. Westmeath)

I don't have any big problem with it being the venue. There are very few hotels that aren't in the grips of the State/Banks at the moment in some way.

I would have a bigger issue if it were operating like some hotels, with their bank's approval, that are offering crazy prices at no hope of turning a profit just to maintain cash flow.

It should be in a hotel who support a county team/county board.
Give some business back to them

The Heritage was the main sponsor of ALL Laois GAA teams for as long as it possibly could be.

surely it is just good manners to supply the source of the above, and not pass it off as your own?

I wasn't arguing against the Heritage.
When it was in Mullingar a few years ago they had it in the one hotel in the town (Park hotel) that doesn't give one cent of sponsorship to any GAA team

Interesting point.

The Croke Park GAA may also be dealing with Banks as some people at GAA Congress were talking about problems where the Croke Park GAA, (because units of the Association vested in the GAA have to get headquarters approval), had approved some mad-cap developments and for all we know could have given some form of guarantee or other letter of comfort.

In any event units in trouble are being advised to pay up ... see whats happening in Mayo over the €16m debt. Crazy stuff.

I thought I had included the source. Apologies. I don't think anyone would have thought it was my own.

The whole hitting "quote", having to log in and the hit "quote" again distracted me.

Very happy to acknowledge that it is a Maldron Hotel blurb.
