i would just like to ask all Limerick Gaels what are our prospects this year, and maybe more importantly over the next 5 years...as an limerick exile i read and hear all the news on the net,but its not the same as being at home and listening to the word in the pub and going to all the local games!!
it seems to me that we have a hugely talented panel, and sooner rather then later we can really make that final push that could deliver us the holy grail!!

prospects for this year would be to make a little progress a win v tipp would be massive and not as unattainable as some would suggest but being realistic a good performance in that match and a run to the qf would suffice for this year.I am not being negative only realistic yes i would love if i could say we'll beat tipp then cork........if they put out the best 15 from limk fully fit and focused yes we can beat these teams as i don't think they're world beaters themselves. As for next few years there seems to be decent talent coming through but no different than that of our opponents which we are a bit behind at the moment so don't be fooled if you are told that we have unreal talent coming through.Anyway who's to say how x and y will develop over next few years give any young lads with talent a chance to mature without heaping pressure on them.To be honest though while you couldn't say we will win an all irl in 5 years there seems to be enough coming through to suggest that we will be competitive and maybe more.and i have said before a few years ago i thought we could slip really down the ladder but thanfully that hasn't happened

I thought we might be stronger than we are this year. We have some talent coming through that is way above anything we have had in a long time. Not since Shaughs have we had young forwards coming through of the standard of Dowling, Hannon, and Downes, and the likes of Tobin and Mulcahy coming through too. Guys you actually expect to score from play. In midfield and the backs we have quality players too, but we are in more of a state of transition than I expected as we will still need to find a find a centre back, at the best this year we have found a temporary solution. The full back line too has an unsettled look to it, and our current wing backs are not as dominant in their positions as we have seen from Limerick before. Despite a lot of talent coming through we still have many questions marks over a lot of positions and it may take a little longer than I had hoped for us to develop a more settled and balanced team that will allow the youth coming through to make their full impact. In a couple of seasons the likes of Hickey and Gavin O'Mahony will be the senior players on the team and I hope they step up to replace the likes of Geary as team leaders.

Being optimistic we have an outside shot of upsetting Tipp, after that, making the quarter finals should be the aim for the year, and we should be targeting to win a Munster within the next two seasons.

Munster final win against Clare in the summer.

And then at Least a All Ireland Semi Final to look forward too.

Munster under 21 Final too.

After the Tipperary game we should plan for 2013 and blood players in the qualifiers.

You're right. We really need to introduce some young blood to this team.

Realistically, we are about 4-5 players (primarily on the bench) away from being a team capable of contending for titles.

All you need though is for each year's U21 team and each year's minor team to produce 1-2 strong players and you'll eventually develop a core of senior players from which to build a genuine contender. Senior hurling is about a composite panel of good players aged 19-33 (on average).

I think the experience of the 00-02 3 in a row has made us a little more cerebral in how we approach underage development. Having an All-Ireland champion U21 or minor team is lovely, but ultimately it means nothing. It is in fact much more desirable to have a decent U21 or minor team that produces a small number of excellent players. I look at last year's Limerick U21 and minor teams and see that - they didn't win All-Irelands, but the upper echelons of those teams (the Dowlings, Hannons, Allis' of this world etc.) are probably a higher standard of individual player than existed on the 00-02 vintage.

For this year, I'd be happy with a good performance against Tipp and a run to a QF where we have a 50/50 chance of winning. Finding two or three senior-calibre players from the U21 and minor sides is more important than winning either of those titles, although a Munster in either would be great for confidence going forward.

Would worry about prospects for under 21 team as they have to deal with expectation this year given that so many are underage. Last year there was no real expectation.

As for the seniors, maybe its best that I close my eyes for 70 minutes in Thurles!!!!
