Motion to remove it passed at Congress.

Can see this causing consternation this summer.

Unless I'm mistaken there will be nothing to stop a full forward standing in on top of the goalkeeper in the small square for the duration of a match?

The previous rule was hard to judge to be fair and Kildare - among other counties - were done over in recent years by bad decisions. Not sure of the new rule will be any better though. There is clarity now you can argue but can see some big decisions about whether a 'keeper was/wasn't impeded/fouled by a forward as the ball came in.

Daft decision. The rule was in place for how many years? No point having a small square, may as well get rid of it.

Good. Now it is up to the fullback line to see that the golie is not exposed too often.Yes you are going to have people complaining but the way things were going was making a real joke out of the game.Good decision me thinks.

Is this in Hurling and Football , does it come into effect straight away?

To be honest I'm a bit puzzled by the text of the motion and what it means.

(31) Amend Rule 4.9, Technical Fouls, Playing Rules of
Football, O.G. Part 2 as follows:
“For an attacking player to enter opponent’s small
rectangle;
(a) During Play (excluding Set Play), before the final play
of the ball into the small rectangle
(b) In Set Play, before the ball enters the small rectangle.”
Retain Exception (i).

In the fifth line of Exception

(ii) insert the words “otherwise
illegally” between the words “been” and “within”.
Ard Chomhairle

What is "Set Play"? What is "Final Play"? I doubt if it is as simple as allowing a big full forward to perch on the goalkeepers toes for the full game. The wording is more obscure than something out of a European Treaty document!

I hope this is just in relation to Football.

Hurling is A ok as it is, plus lads swinging on balls in the square aint great for a goalkeeper.

Yes I agree, hurling is fine but for football this had to be changed. In the last few years there was some mad decisions there that just shouted out to everyone for correction.Even the ref's didnt know whether they were coming or going for a finish.

Is the rule a reintroduction of the rule from the league a couple of years ago where you could enter the square once the ball had been kicked/pucked.Or can you now stand in the small square all day and not move.

You can stand there all day, the day of the big full-forward is back

Will Niall Sherdian get a recall by Longford.

I thought the rule from the league from a couple of years ago was fine and didnt cause any controversy (in football at least). This rule could be a disaster for both codes and it will be impossible for hurling goalies in particular. Why couldnt they just bring back a rule that was proven to have worked well and had very few complaints.I guarantee this rule will be changed next year if they are allowed

No way. That day is gone forever and no loss.Evereyone has to play his part now and the the day of the big bodachic of a full forward getting his place on the team when all he was capable of doing was to hack the golie when a high ball was coming in is long over.Give the ref a small bit of credit to use his descretion to call a foul when it clearly is.

All that will happen is referees will employed the same tactic as their soccer counterparts. "Touch a goalie and its a free out"

Which is a load of bull goalies should be subject to teh same amount of contact as outfield players are.

I wasn't thinking about the 'big bodachic', thinking more of the likes of Kieran Donaghy, who can hatch in there around the goalline all day and will be virtually impossible to mark. Teams will need big goalkeepers and full backs.

I remember Johhny Giles taking about the time they trialed soccer in a few games without the offside rule to try an get more goals scored and make it more entertaining.

It was an unmitigated disaster with teams just employing all big men up front and hoofing from one goal to another , he said it was obvious it was going to be the ruination of the skillful player if it were to be introduced on a full time basis.

I know they are trying to encourage more kicking and less handpassing in Football , but I hope it doesn't lead to the case where all full forwards and full back-men will be required to be 6 foot plus and have have just brute strength as the main quality.

It changes the first goal scorer market considerably - penalty takers and the poachers on the field will certainly be well backed going forward!

Michael Cussen could be getting a call back to the Cork panel soon!

But have noticed how teams have adapted to what Kieran used to do.Even Kerry knew this tactic would only work for so long. You dont see him domenating the square anymore like he used to.In fact they are now sending him out the field to win ball and distribute it to teammates to get scores.Even Kerry who are the masters knew this tactic would only work short term and no longer rely on him to provide the quick score.
