I'm looking to buy an NBA jersey over the web from America and I'm just wondering does anyone know the ins and outs of paying import tax when it gets here? Or if anyone knows where you can get them in Ireland?

I've bought buckets loads of DVDs that have been shipped from america on amazon and I've only paid what it was the advertised price on Amazon.I assume you can do the same buying clothes from america on line.

Very difficult to avoid the tax especialy if buying from a big sports company.

If you go on eBay and buy from a small retailer or private person who will agree to mark down the value and make it look like a present rather than a purchase you have some hope.

Best of luck!

On the ball lads. Just been told they have a few in a footlocker shop up in Dublin so i'll see if I can get my local shop to order one down. Failing that i'll use amazon. Can't imagine the tax would be too extravagant on one item of clothing anyway.

Be very careful lads.

I've been ordering stuff for years from the States and never had an issue.

Then a couple of months ago I ordered two t-shirts from a store in San Francisco worth about $60. UPS delivered with a tax bill for €35. I was not impressed.

I thought there was some limit on what you could bring in but obviously there isn't.

Yes. VAT receipt and "other Government Charges" presented to me.

A small bit annoying!

I'm as puzzled as you are HF!!

dubliner, from what i'm hearing the whole import tax thing is very hit and miss, which has been confirmed now from what you've told me. I was also told it can depend on whether the item is delivered by an post or a courier.

Jaysus. That's just not right. Ffs you wouldn't mind 10% but that much is just morally wrong. That said this is the Irish government I suppose!

acasports.co.uk have a good selection.
The nbastore.com is the best but very expensive and you could get mugged by the Mailman too.
A lot of Irish sport shops have the Kobe, LeBron, Wade, Deng and Galvin jerseys on sale.

So now you are stalking me. Honestly a village somewhere in Cork was minus its idiot when thankfully you decided to depart from Irelands shores.

I bought a Denver Broncos NFL jersey from somewhere in America a few years ago. The cost of tax was nearly as much as the jersey itself. I had to pay something like €40 on delivery. I can't remember the exact amount. If you can get it in Ireland I would advise you to do that.

It used to be hit and miss during the boom. Customs would generally only chase you for higher value items. You'd be unlucky to get caught for the import duty on anything under probably €300 - €400. Since the recession kicked in and the government are looking for extra revenue Customs are chasing every penny. You cant buy a t-shirt or DVD from the US/Asia (anywhere outside the Eu) now without havING to stump up extra on delivery.

Don't seem to matter if it's An Post or a courier delivering either. They'll all withhold delivery if you don't pay the import duty.

I was only charged vat and duty when importing from the USA through Fedex or UPS. They pay the vat and duty for you when the item passes through customs in Ireland, then they chase you for it after delivery for small amounts or they won't complete delivery unless you pay on the spot for larger amounts. I have ALWAYS paid vat and duty importing with the large companies.

I have NEVER paid vat and duty when importing with USPS, United States Postal Service. It usually is less expensive, takes longer and delivery is completed by An Post.

If the option is there between UPS Fedex or USPS always take the USPS.
