Is it just me or has the place gone very very quiet since xmas? I joined the place in mid 2009 and the place was a hive of activity.

I wonder could the Admin tell us are figures way back? Is there a big reason bar the change of the site?
The place has slowed down something wicked i think anyway.

Pity, it seems soccer topics are the only ones seeing reasonable activity too.

I have noticed it as well - definately quieter, especially the last few weeks.
Still though we're in a GAA hinterland between the league and the championship so always a quiet kind of time as lads are trying to get reports from county training sessions and challange matches to gauge where their team is going.

How about contributing to some of the interesting topics and creating more debate instead of moaning about it!

OK, let me try to respond to that question.

To analyse traffic, we have been using Statcounter.com since the site was set up back in 2000 and Google Analytics since it became available. The stats disclosed by both are remarkably consistent with each other. So, we have a database of stats over a 10-year period compiled using the same analytics.

Here's what they show when we compare 1/1/2012 to 17/4/2012 with exactly the same period last year.

Unique Visits:
2012 973,000
2011 875,000

Increase = 98,000 = + 11%

Pages Downloaded
2012 4,566,000
2011 5,085,000

Decrease = 519,000 = - 10%

During a representative period of time, while the number of visitors increased by 11% the number of pages they read decreased by 10%. That is a huge divergence.

We first noticed this trend in the second half of last year and it is disimproving further. The main reason seems to be the migration towards mobile devices as a way of accessing the Web.

In 2010, the percentage of our traffic that came from mobile devices was 0%. Through 2011 it grew to 10% and currently it is at 20%. Typically, a mobile user reads 35% fewer pages than someone on a PC or laptop and - again, typically, they spend 35% less time on the site.

Our response to these trends is the following:
1. We have re-written and modernised our back end code platform
2. Very shortly, we will move AFR to a very fast new server which will improve the download time both for PC/laptop users and mobile devices
3. We will optimise (and that includes simplify) AFR for the main mobile devices.
4. We will have an AFR app for mobile devices.

For the past 10 years we have always anticipated web changes here at AFR. This is the first time the technology has moved ahead of us and it's affecting our traffic figures at the moment. We will get back 'in sync' with it.

That is very interesting and underlines the importance of designing to cater for smartphones when it comes to websites.

Thanks for sharing.

Perhaps you might consider revisiting the following site changes:

1. The login issue

2. Allow the editing/deleting of the thread topic by the poster as was the norm before

3. Before banning a poster allow him/her to plead his case. Sometimes a post may be read in a way the poster didn't intend

End

How about not getting banned for criticising Rory Hickey.

Definitely appears to be down alright in relation to the topics titles on the right changing away-there seems to be pretty much the same topics there if you log on 12 hours after you last did. I know I visit and post a lot less myself in the last few months but that's probably a good thing:)

3 good suggestions.

I know you responded on the login issue before but the new system is very annoying.

On the third suggestion, how about a system of suspensions? Especially for long term users. A 2 week suspension or something might be a better system to discourage messers as you call them. Or would that admin be too time-consuming?

I'm not being smart in asking this, but can you explain exactly in simple terms what the issue is with the new Login? I'm genuinely trying to understand it. My 'take' was that we had simply aligned with the routine on forums like Boards.ie and politics.ie

You can criticise Rory Hickey - as referees often are here. You just can't libel him. Or anyone else for that matter. The forum rules are clear on that. Simple. And you also need to allow some margin of respect for the Site Admin that he knows what he's doing in what is a very tricky area of the law.

I would guess it is that if you try to reply to a message, once you log in it brings you back to the start of the topic instead of to the message you are trying to reply to.

Is it possible to list those who have been banned in the last few weeks and the reason why they were banned?

Agree with the log in issue. It brings you back to the start of the thread rather than a blank place to reply.

Next question, maybe a stupid one, is the site optimised/designed for mobile devices?

I actually find the login feature a good thing. I just login before i look at any threads as a habit now and i can be sure i don't lose a lenghty post due to an error. And by fcuk did that happen a fair bit before and you would be pulling your hair out.

The only thing that is a really bad loss if the use of the Refresh button. It was so handy to check if someone had posted on a thread without having to go to the topic listings again. If that was sorted i would be pretty happy with the new system.

Maybe AFR coder could move the toolbar from being so close to the post reply button too? Its constantly flashing up on the screen when unwanted.

I brought up the Login problem on Day 1. Its a real pain.
If you hit Quote or Post-Reply, you are asked to login, when you login, you are brought back to the thread but NOT in Edit mode. Which means you have to find the post you wanted to reply to and hit Quote again or Post Reply again.

Yes it's a bit annoying but I need to just get into the habit of logging in as soon as visit the site and problem solved-just a matter of getting into the habit of doing so.

I answered that up above and the answer is 'not at the moment', but we will do it over the next couple of months.

OK, before the changes I would be permanently logged in, so when I would click reply to a thread the reply dialog box would pop up.

From force of habit I still do it the same way, but now what comes up is the login page. So I log in and I'm back to the thread and must now click reply again. I would much prefer it the way it was before I must say.

(I wouldn't know what routine those other forums use as I'm not a member ...I'm yours exclusively, as it were!)

Another thing you might reconsider is to have the number of replies to a thread displayed on thread, so that during a lively debate you can see immediately if the reply count has been updated without wasting time scrolling to the bottom to check this.
