You'll always get an expert on here.....
Anyway, just got my household renewal from AIB, its gone up from about 1000 to 2000. Withj no claims - ever! Reducing my building costs to 70e/ft and contents at 100K, I get a quote of down to 1300 from AIB. The practicalities of rebuilding their balance sheets, maybe?
I've got a set of quotes from 123 (500) and fbd(600) and two from a broker at 800 & 1200.
Include accidental damage, valuable items (5K), smoke alarm, house alarm discount.
Am I missing a trick here? How can quotes vary by so much or am I not comparing like with like?
Any advice gratefully received.

You are picking up some of the cost of Sean Quinn's gamble in the form of an insurance levy, this also applies to your motor insurance.
House insurance is money for old rope,I have never claimed either.
I changed to 123.ie a few years ago, costing me about 350 a year I think. For this I dropped the rebuild cost & took on a excess premium in case I have to put in a claim. Something like I pay the first 500 or something like that, I'm guessing this wouldn't apply to your AIB quote. Devil is in the detail

Be weary of reducing your rebuilding cost, because average clause.
If under insurance by say 30%. You loss 30% of all claims. I.e. insurance for 100,000. You have a claim worth €50,000. You only get get 70% of 50,000.
