One of America's, nay the world's greatest musicians passed away today at the age of 71.

I could watch The Last Waltz forever and have the two Midnight Ramble concerts that he released on DVD.

An absolute stone legend.

What a musician-I watch the last waltz dvd a few times a year-what a collection of talent on 1 stage. Have you ever been to the last waltz tribute in the olympia? I've been meaning to go the last couple of times but never did-would be interested in reviews.

RIP Levon.

One of the real legends.

That vocal on The Weight and those harmonies with Richard Manuel and Rick Danko.

The Band never made a bad record.

The heart and soul of 'The Band', and my favourite Band vocalist, even if the late Richard Manuel's vocals might have been more affecting.

Their eponymous second album will always be a 'Desert Island Disc' of mine.

Robbie Robertson might have been responsible for their best lyrics, but Levon gave life to them.

He's dead, but the music lives on

RIP, Levon, Legend

To be honest I'd rather just stick on the DVD and I mean no offence to the people involved in the tribute.

He had a huge falling out with Robbie Robertson but Robertson visited him in the last couple of days and they parted as friends. Just as it should be.

Boy this one has really made me sad!

Yep, I'm glad they sorted it out, he was very bitter about how Robertson almost took over the Band, but didn't let it get him down or slow him down. Some versatile musician and vocalist. Another irreplaceable gone....

I was there also and would concur, it wasn't a bad night but is vastly overrated and certainly not for hardcore fans, a mate of mine is a fanatic and he wasn't a bit impressed.

Do yourself a favour Jimmy.

Get The Band, Music from Big Pink, Stage Fright, Rock of Ages and The Last Waltz by The Band and Dirt Farmer, Electric Dirt, The Midnight Ramble Sessions Vols 1 and 2 and Ramble at the Ryman by Levon Helm.

Your ears will thank you for it.

Before the Flood and The Basement Tapes both of which are credited to Bob Dylan and The Band should be on your shopping list as well.

I must get my hands on those midnight ramble tapes. The last two solo albums were really excellent. He was a true musician, only concerned about making good music. Like our own Rory Gallagher. My favourite is him singing 'Night they drove' on the last Waltz, doesn't get much better.

Jimmy Conway, just take a look at this and you'll know whether you like it or not.

I pulled into Nazareth, I was feelin' about half past dead;
I just need some place where I can lay my head.
"Hey, mister, can you tell me where a man might find a bed?"
He just grinned and shook my hand, and "No!", was all he said.

Take a load off Fanny, take a load for free;
Take a load off Fanny, and you put the load right on me.

I'd be a couple years younger, but in the same boat as Jimmy, he never came across my radar. I' say mainly due to me ignoring Bob Dylan.

One good thing about threads like these is an reason to educate myself, not Dylan though.

I understand the anti-Dylan stance although I am a huge fan myself but the Band are something different. Do yourself a favour and get a copy of the Last Waltz-it is simply an amazing night and I would give my right ball to have been there. If you like that, get copies of Music from the Big Pink, Stage Fright and Moondog Matinee-each one a treat for the ears.

I could never quite fully get into the band, and God knows I tried with multiple listenings to Music From the Big Pink, The Band, the last Waltz etc back in the day (though I will admit to a fondness to the Basement Tapes).
But either way, Levon was one soulful dude. He occupied a unique piece of real estate in American music with many different strains and influences evident in his music. And you could tell from listening to his music that he seemed to come by them honestly.

I'd rate their album of the same name,'The Band', not only their best album, - and by some distance, - but superior to any single album of Bob Dylan's
