Mid to low 50's would be a decent level of fitness. Take your pulse first thing in the morning before you get out of bed.

Anything between 60-100 is considered normal. It depends on the person and other factors but a better indicator is when you push yourself and then see how quickly your heart returns to normal. There are lads here who could give you better advise but that's my addition to the topic.

Don't know what it should be.
I'm 37 in a few weeks, in good shape, first thing in morning normally 49-50.

On its own resting heart rate won't tell you a lot. It's the range that's vital. It's generally considered that you can't change your max hr. the formula 220 minus age is sometimes used to calculate max but is nowhere near exact.
If your max is fixed then the more you can drop your resting hr will give you a better range. It's more used to check if you're recovered. Everyones hr is individual so just check your own and monitor it as you train. As you get fitter it will drop. If it rises it tells you that your body's under stress, (not fully recovered from training, cold, infection etc....)
I hope I'm making sense

After posting last reply I checked mine. Usually its around 48, this morning it was 60. I did a tough session yesterday and this suggests that my body is still under strain. Makes sense I think.
