The Wicklow County Board has confirmed that a substantial amount of cash was taken from the senior hurling team's dressing room during its match against Down in Trim yesterday.

A total of six players had money taken from their wallets during the game. No other items were stolen.

The spokesman said he could not confirm how much was taken, but it is reported that the total sum involved hundreds of euro.

The spokesman said the team and back room staff were absolutely shattered and shocked when they realised what had happened.

Dressing rooms are usually locked during matches. Yesterday, the dressing room was unlocked when the team returned at half time and at the end of the match, the spokesman said.

But he added that it was unclear whether or not the room had been locked in the team's absence.

The spokesman confirmed that a whip-around had taken place among the other team members, back room staff and board officials, and the money was used to compensate the six who were out of pocket.

He said appropriate steps are being taken in the aftermath of the incident, and the county board would be in touch with Croke Park over the matter.

"Those who are out of pocket will have to be looked after. They cannot not be expected to shoulder such a loss because in this day and age such a thing shouldn't happen."

The team won the match, which secures their place in Division 2A next year.

When I was under 12 the money (small pence) I had in my pockets was robbed. Never again did I bring anything into a dressingroom afterwards to this day and we were told that as youngsters.

When I played rugby, the lads who did have cash, watches et. in with them, all put it into a bag and it was taken away by an official of the club until after the game. I would have thought there was a collection of valuables and money in most dressingrooms but there you go.

I think it cannot be taken for granted that pockets wont be pilfered.

Dressing room doors should at least be locked when Inter County games (and club games) are on in all fairness.

I know Trim, a state of the art facility (as good as Croker seriously) and dressing rooms are ALWAYS locked. Must have just been an unlucky day. These things happen.

If they want to raid pockets, a lock wont stop them.

If each of a 30 man panel had €50 in their pocket, thats €1500 to be gained by a thief.

There will be more and more dressingrooms targetted.

Murroe Boher dressingrooms broken into recently. Its on the front page of todays Limerick Leader.

Broke into the locked dressingroom and took the keys of the cars from their pockets and robbed the cars. So much for my theory. Robbed a laptop worth no more than €100 euro but containing the recent projects assignments and course notes of a student.

Its gone to the stage now where you need someone guarding the dressingrooms.
