Lads, I am just after noticing that my licence is due to be out of date next week(start of may) , do any of ye know offhand if I can't get it renewed by the start of the month , do I lose the licence and have to resit the test again or is there some leeway.

Get a renewal form in the Tax office (garda barracks), get photos done in the chemist and a charge i think of €12 and you'l get a new one in the post i think Blanco.

No there's no panic, you certainly don't lose the licence or have to re-sit the test. You can renew your licence within ten years of it's expiry. It's only if it lapses beyond ten years that you have to start the whole process over again.

If you need your driving licence renewed urgently for work commitments or travelling to England you should include a letter from your employer or a copy of your flight details with your application, and they should process it within a day or two. Otherwise you could be waiting a few weeks to them to process and post you out your new licence. As far as I know from next Jan all new driving licence/renewal application wont be processed by local tax offices but will be processed centrally and what you get posted back will resemble a credit card. I think its 20 euro for a 10 year licence renewal.

Forgot to say, if you can call into to your motor tax office with your application in person as opposed to posting in application they will give you receipt of application which covers you in the event of been stopped by guards. You need to include your
current licence with application form and 2 photos.
