Important Limerick City club Hurling forum to discuss next steps for the game in the counties largest division

"I believe that we must now set in place a plan for the future of each club and for Limerick Hurling. To achieve this however we need to conduct a complete review of all activity, both on and off the pitch, in each club and in each department in which Limerick GAA operates. Only through open, honest and frank discussion with grassroots members offering their real and constructive experience, feedback and analysis and by mapping out a plan for the future, can all gaels unite together for a common purpose being the greater good of Hurling in Limerick." so says the newly appointed Games Development Administrator for Hurling in Limerick City, Ger Downes in a wide and broad ranging letter to Limerick City Hurling clubs this week.

Downes, a member of Knockaderry GAA club in West Limerick, who has been recently appointed as director of Hurling in Limerick City by the Munster GAA council, has been busy outlining his plans to club members, the first in which he intends to host a City Club Hurling Forum in Limerick GAA's new facilities in the University of Limerick on Thursday May 10th at 7.30pm.

"The time is now right for hurling in Limerick City to take the next progressive steps forward, together we need plan how to further develop and promote the game in the counties largest populated division." he continued.

Each club in the City Hurling division has been sent a specially designed Club Questionnaire to discuss and fill out in advance of the Thursday May 10th Hurling forum, which is being seen as a defining meeting for Hurling in the City. The forum will be opened by Sean Walsh, Chairperson of Munster GAA Council and with All Ireland Hurling winning manager and current GAA pundit Cyril Farrell, renowned as one of the greatest Hurling managers of modern times, providing the key note address to those in attendance on the evening.

Club members and parties whom are interested in the development Hurling in Limerick City are invited to attend the forum on the night. Feedback from the findings of the Club Questionnaire along with group discussion on the challenges and opportunities facing developing Hurling will be facilitated by Munster Games manager Joey Carton (De la Salle) Waterford.

And the last word to the man charged with developing hurling in all areas from age 6 to senior level in Limerick City around the importance of the forum for the future of the game, "To take the next steps forward we need to judge ourselves on where we are in the present and review what has happened in the past. I urge you one and all to put real and honest thought into this club questionnaire as the information obtained from this and on the night of the forum itself will impact on how we all in Limerick GAA go about our business into the future and also to prepare and guide us for taking the next progressive steps forward for Hurling in Limerick City".

The Limerick City GAA Club Hurling forum will take place on Thursday May 10th at 7.30pm in the Limerick GAA Coaching & Games Department, North Campus, University of Limerick and is open to all interested people with views on developing the game of hurling in the Limerick City division. Admission will be free.

Fair play to Ger setting up this forum. Its badly needed. A roadmap needs to be put in place to get Limerick city hurling back strong again. Na Piarsaigh have proved that if you put in the hard work and have the right structures in place you can succeed no matter where you are based. Limerick city GAA was once very strong with Claughaun, St Pats, Young Irelands, Old Christians and Treaty Sarsfields leading the way in Limerick. Definately potential in the metropolitan area of the city for 3 senior hurling clubs and 4 junior hurling clubs. Best of luck Ger in your new job.

Na piarsaigh are one of the best placed clubs in munster with all the underage success in recent years but are the only club on the northside...the clubs that could develop along similar lines in the near future with a share of hard work would be Monaleen & Mungret(Raheen)...both clubs have large pools of population with reasonable underage success...if these two clubs got to anywhere na piarsaighs set up there could be 3 senior clubs...castletroy college has to be a big help to monaleen....Claughaun,St Pats & Old Christians are more difficult to turn round..

How did this forum go? Was their a strong turnout from the clubs? Any radical plans for the game in the city?
