With Two-Mile-Borris set to become Ireland's answer to Las Vegas, it now looks like Athlone could become Ireland's answer to Shanghai with approval being granted today for a Europe China trade hub in Creggan, Athlone, with an eventual investment of a mind-boggling €1.4bn, attracting 3,000 visitors per day, every day every year, and employing 1,300 people. Will it happen?

In lay-mans terms in the west, we borrow Chinese money to buy Chinese goods. In terms of Geo-Politics they're spending on their military is multiplying on a yearly basis. And if in China doing any kind of business, there are the 3 T's you dont mention: Tibet, Taiwan and Tianamen.

I have my doubts about this development and wonder how on earth it would work. Why would the Chinese come to Ireland let alone Athlone to showcase their wares? Why not a cheaper central European location? We are paying enough ancillary taxes as a result of ten years construction and could end up paying more if this flops. Would like to know the governments fall back plan if things go wrong......an indoor hurling field???
