What you said is both disturbing and disgusting and basically says that a man who was in power in the Church knew about children that were being raped but passed on info and then wiped his hands saying thats fine now ive done my Job! Bullsh*te!! Would you? Would you tell your Principal that kids were being raped and then do nothing when this continued for decades ALL OVER THE COUNTRY and think to yourself it will solve itself?. You are a educated man and know what this horrible horrible organisation has done to Ireland yet you still come out and say that the likes of Brady were innocent to all of this. If I had my way the man would be in JAIL. Knowing about children being abused and not acting about it and reporting it as criminal behaviour IS JUST AS BAD.Silence D2, Silence and fear is a disease. I know only too well about issue and the effects of it on peoples lives. I worry about your moral beliefs and find it absolutely horrific to think that there is somebody in Ireland who actually thinks that this man should still have a position of power a while I am of the opinion he should be in jail. People in ireland call on bankers to be jailed for embezzling funds but no one is screaming for the likes of Brady to be charged for overseeing child abuse.
You can only jail people who have committed a crime.
What crime did Brady Commit?

It is only when they started to be hauled before the courts and had to pay huge financial penalties (in the U.S. for example) that they started to take the issue of child abuse seriously.
Fair enough.

Withholding information about crimes committed, or about to be committed, or information about any person who has had any part in a crime, is an offence.
And that is besides the basic morality, humanity and decency of doing the right thing - a concept more and more alien from the Catholic church by the day.
I hope Brady stays, I hope he digs in - the bollox - and attracts all the attention that his odious behavious deserves. And
I hope that a lot more of the arrogant, self-serving fcukers are humiliated along with him.

No - he didn't. Why didn't he pass it along to the Gardaí? Why didn't he pass it along to the parents of those who were being abused?
You've made a dreadful fool of yourself on this one D2. Did you actually watch the program Dara Macintyre made?
There is procedure and there are rights for those accused of even the most henious crimes, but there is also a moral unwritten code of right and wrong, which surely dictates that you would move heaven and earth, risking your collar if necessary, to ensure that children were not sexually abused.

I dont know why people are asking Brady to resign. I would be looking for ways to arrest him. His story sickens and maddens me. His work-to-rule excuse is despicable. "I was only taking notes". Swearing brave children (this was 1975) to an oath of secrecy is just disturbed.
Even if he does maintain it was his boss' fault, he must have known that child abuse was a big problem in the Roman CC. So I ask the question; what did he do in the 35 years after Smyth to improve child abuse reporting? He became a bishop and then a cardinal and did nothing. Cloyne proved that.
This is also why it annoys me when people say it was only a few bad priests. It was rampant and uncontrolled and lets say only 5% of priest were abusers, why wasn't there internal agitation among the other 95% to root this evil out? Why did they turn a blind eye and 'move on' these creeps? They all knew there was a problem. As another poster said, evil prospers when good men do nothing.
Its obvious though that the Vatican are telling Brady to stay put - they dont want the worldwide negative press that such a high profile resignation would bring - they are willing to sacrifice a bit less footfall at mass in Ireland to keep the global business unaffected. Disgusting organisation.

To me his position is totally untenable (and I’m saying that as a sorta practising Catholic), and by staying he is doing severe damage to what remains of the church. His argument appears that he followed rules and he’s trying to hide behind that. He had a moral obligation to ensure that at least action was taken to ensure that nobody else suffered. ‘Different times’ or any other crap like that is absolutely no defence, child abuse is wrong now, it was wrong 30 years ago, and it was wrong 300 years ago, and he should walk, full stop. I’ve talked with a lot of people on this and I’ve yet to come across anybody supporting him.
